This guide will show you how to navigate with Google Maps, offering turn-by-turn directions on your iPhone, iPad, Android device, or through the web interface.
Procedure
Through the Mobile Application
Launch the Google Maps app on your Android, iPhone, or iPad. It's represented by the pushpin icon found on your home screen or within your list of apps.
Set your destination. Tap the search bar at the top of the screen, type the address or name of your destination, and select it from the search results. Alternatively, you can tap and hold anywhere on the map to drop a pin at your desired location.
Click on Directions. This blue button will appear beneath the address you’ve entered.
Enter your starting point. Tap the Your location field at the top of the screen and type in your starting address.
- If your trip includes multiple destinations, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, then select Add stop to input another location.
Choose your travel method. Select from the available transport icons at the top of the screen:
- Driving: Car icon
- Transit: Train icon
- Walking: Hiker icon
- Rides: Ride-sharing passenger icon
- Cycling: Cyclist icon
- Swipe right to see more transportation options if needed.
Click Start in the bottom-right corner to initiate turn-by-turn navigation.
- To view your directions list, tap ^ in the lower-right corner of the screen, then select ⋮≡.
Using a Computer
Visit http://maps.google.com. Enter this address in your browser’s address bar or click the link and press ⏎ Return to proceed.
Click on the Directions icon. This is the white arrow within a blue diamond, located beside the 'Search Google Maps' box at the top-left corner of the map.
Choose your preferred mode of transport. Select an icon from the blue bar at the top of the window:
- Driving: Car icon
- Transit: Train icon
- Walking: Hiker icon
- Rides: Ride-sharing passenger icon
- Cycling: Cyclist icon
- Flying: Airplane icon
Input your starting location. Click or tap on Choose starting point and type your starting address or location.
- Alternatively, you can click directly on the map to mark your starting point.
Click on Choose your destination or click on the map….
Enter your destination. Click the next field and search for the location you're headed to.
- Alternatively, you can click on the map to pinpoint your destination.
Select your preferred route.
