Steps
Chatting on Omegle

Visit the Omegle homepage. Getting started with Omegle is easy; all you need is an internet connection. To begin, go to Omegle.com, where you'll find various chat options. Here are a few basic steps to initiate a chat with a stranger. Before chatting, make sure to review the terms of use at the bottom of the homepage. By using Omegle, you agree to the following conditions:
- You are over 13 years old.
- If you're under 18, you have parental/guardian consent.
- You will not share inappropriate content or harass other users.
- You will not engage in illegal activities locally or nationally.

Choose between text or video chat. Near the bottom-right of the homepage, you'll see the "Start chatting:" line with two options beneath: "Text" and "Video." These choices are as simple as they sound: "Text" allows you to chat with strangers through text, while "Video" lets you and the other person see and hear each other. Select your preferred chat method before starting.
- Note: For video chat, your computer must have a working microphone and webcam. Most computers today have an inbuilt mic and webcam, but not all. If yours lacks these features, you may need to purchase the appropriate peripherals (check out Mytour's article on how to set up a webcam and connect a computer mic for more details).

Start chatting! Once you've chosen your preferred chat method, you'll be instantly connected with a stranger. You can communicate by typing your messages in the chat box and pressing Enter, or click the "Send" button at the bottom-right. If you choose video chat, you'll see and hear both you and the other person in the video frame on the left side of the screen.
- If video chat is selected, a pop-up might ask for your permission to enable your camera. Click "Yes" or "Okay" to activate the camera and start the video chat.

When you're done chatting, click "Stop." After chatting for a sufficient time, click the "Stop" button at the bottom-left corner. This will change to "Really?" (Are you sure?). Click it again to confirm and end the conversation.
- You can also quickly click this button twice at any time during the chat to immediately end the conversation. This is handy if you encounter inappropriate content and want to stop.
- Note: It's common for Omegle users to end conversations quickly (sometimes before either party even sends a message). Get used to this and don't take it personally. Some people prefer to browse through many strangers before settling on someone to chat with.
Use optional features

Enter your interests to meet like-minded people. When you return to the Omegle homepage (just click the "Omegle" banner at the top-left of the chat screen), you can try adding your interests in the text box under the "What do you wanna talk about?" line. After that, click "Text" or "Video" to let Omegle connect you with a stranger interested in the same topic.
- If Omegle can't find anyone with the same topic in mind, it will randomly connect you with other users as usual.

Save your conversation history with interesting chats. Over time, you might end up having a fun, quirky, or even enlightening conversation that you'd like to keep on Omegle. Instead of copying and pasting, use the built-in chat log export feature. After you exit a chat, the orange "Great chat?" button will appear along with optional links. Click on "Get a link" to open the chat log in a new tab with an easy-to-use link, or click "Select all" to highlight and copy the entire conversation easily.
- You will also see links to Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. Click on one of these links to create a fully formatted post, which you can then share on your social media profile. It's a great way to share those interesting chats!

Enter your university email address to chat with fellow students. Omegle offers a private chat service exclusively for college students. To access this feature, click the "College student chat" button on the Omegle homepage. Then, enter a valid email address with the " .edu" domain extension in the text box.
- After entering your email, check your inbox for a confirmation email from Omegle. Once you confirm your email address, you'll be able to access the college student chat service.

Try out Spy Mode/Question Mode. Sometimes, it's fun to watch or listen to strangers chatting about a topic of your choice. To experience this mode, click the "Spy (question) mode" button at the bottom right of the homepage. You'll be prompted to enter an open-ended question for discussion. Type your question and click "ask strangers" to see what others have to say about it.
- If you'd rather answer the question yourself, you can click the "discussing questions" link below. Note: in this mode, if the other party disconnects, the chat will end. So, be quick with your answers!

Experience the Adult/Unmoderated Chat feature if you're over 18. Some people come to Omegle for explicit conversations, so you may encounter some inappropriate content. If this is what you're looking for, click the "Adult" or "Unmoderated Section" link on the homepage. The rest is straightforward—it's up to you!
- Although it seems obvious, we should mention: in Omegle's Unmoderated and Adult sections, you will encounter explicit adult content. Be sure you know this before accessing these areas!
Use Omegle responsibly and appropriately.

Don't overreact! Omegle is a platform where strangers from all over the world meet and share stories in a fast-paced manner. While it may sound amazing at first, it doesn't always live up to those high expectations, so don't expect too much from what happens on Omegle. Since Omegle users are anonymous, they don't hold themselves to high standards of behavior (this is a well-studied trend in online communities). If someone insults you, calls you names, or threatens you, don't panic; simply end the call.

Don't share or display identifying information. As with any other anonymous online platform, taking basic precautions to protect your identity on Omegle is essential. Never share your real name, location, or personal details with strangers on Omegle, even if you've had an enjoyable conversation with them. You can't know who they truly are, so safety comes first, and always remain anonymous. While most Omegle users are normal, calm people, occasionally, the 'mystery factor' might involve individuals with less than honorable intentions.
- If you're video chatting, double-check that nothing in the camera's view could be exploited. These include financial information, identifying documents, or easily recognizable features of your location, address, etc.

Don't engage in inappropriate or explicit behavior during regular chats. Omegle has designated areas for adult conversations, so if that's why you're on Omegle, make sure to express adult content in the proper space. Don't enter explicit content into the text chat window or display it in video. This behavior not only goes against the spirit of non-adult areas but is also inconsiderate to others (those who don't want to see such content, as they would have accessed the Adult section if they did).
- Also, be aware that conversations outside the 'unmoderated' areas are moderated. Although Omegle doesn't disclose the exact process, there may be automatic systems or moderators working to filter out explicit and inappropriate content from 'clean' areas.

Be kind to new users. Omegle welcomes everyone, including those who may not know what they're doing. If you're familiar with using Omegle, take a moment to help new users. For example, if your video chat partner is struggling with opening their webcam, instead of disconnecting to find someone more interesting, you can send a message guiding them to click 'Yes' on the popup request (or simply share the Mytour article on how to set up a webcam).
- Be patient. Although your partner may take some time to learn, the patience and time you invest in them will help create a friendlier and more open Omegle environment.

If in doubt, don't hesitate to disconnect. If your Omegle conversation becomes suspicious, such as when the person you're chatting with starts asking for personal information, don't hesitate to click the 'Stop' button right away. With nearly 6.5 million users every month, there are thousands of people to talk to at any given moment. So, don't waste time with those who don't respect you.
