Mobile phone costs are becoming increasingly expensive, especially if you exceed your call time or data usage limits. Luckily, there are numerous ways to reduce your mobile plan expenses while still enjoying unlimited access to the internet. You can even listen to music for free and legally.
Steps
Free Calling
Download and install Google Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer. You can install the Google Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer apps to make calls to any number in the U.S. and Canada when connected to Wi-Fi. You can also use Hangouts to receive calls for free using your Google Voice number. With these two apps, you can make calls without spending any money. Download these apps for free from the Google Play Store.
- These apps will use the same Google account linked to your Android device.
- For iPhone, you'll need to sign in with your free Google account. The Hangouts Dialer app is not available for iPhone, so all calls will be made via the Hangouts app.
Sign up for Google Voice number (optional). A Google Voice number allows you to display as your caller ID. This step is optional—if you don’t register, your caller ID will show as "Unknown." You can create a free Google Voice number at google.com/voice, and it will automatically link to your Google account.
- You can also use your SIM card number as your caller ID if you don’t have a Google Voice number. This number will be verified by the SIM card you have installed.
Connect to a Wi-Fi network. You can use the Hangouts Dialer app to make calls as long as your device is connected to a network (Wi-Fi or mobile data). To ensure that your calls are truly free, it’s best to connect to Wi-Fi to avoid using your mobile data plan.
Open Hangouts Dialer. The app will launch with an interface similar to the regular phone dialer. You can't start a Hangouts call from your contacts; you must initiate it within the Hangouts Dialer app.
- On iPhone, tap the Phone tab at the bottom of the Hangouts app to make a call.
Dial the number you want to call. Hangouts Dialer allows you to make free calls to most U.S. and Canadian numbers as long as you’re in a country where Hangouts calls are supported.
- If you’re making an international call or even dialing a domestic number while abroad, add the "+" sign followed by the country code before the phone number.
- If the call is not free, the cost will show on your Google Voice account and will be charged once you accept. You can add funds to your Google Voice account at google.com/voice#billing. You can also use this page to check calling rates for various countries.
Provide your Google Voice number to receive free calls. If you have a Google Voice number linked to your account and Hangouts Dialer, you can receive calls on that number. As long as you stay connected to Wi-Fi, you can make and receive free calls without affecting the talk time on your mobile plan.
Free Texting
Invite friends to use the messaging service. There are many free chat apps you can use to send messages to friends instead of using SMS. The best way to make the most of these services is to get all your friends on the platform. Once they’re on board, you can easily send messages over Wi-Fi or mobile data without paying for SMS. Some popular free messaging services include:
- Facebook Messenger
- Zalo
- Skype
- Hangouts
- Viber
Use a messaging app while connected to a network. As long as your device is connected to Wi-Fi, all sent and received messages will be free of charge. If Wi-Fi is unavailable, the chat app will use your mobile data plan to send and receive messages. These free chat apps will never charge you for text messaging.
Sign up for Google Voice to send free text messages. You can use a Google Voice number and the Google Voice app to send free texts to any mobile number. Replies will be sent to both your phone and email. Sign up for Google Voice and get a free number at google.com/voice.
- When using Google Voice, SMS messages will be sent and received via your mobile data plan if there is no Wi-Fi connection.
- If you have Hangouts installed, you can use it to send and receive Google Voice text messages for free instead of using the Google Voice app.
Send messages via online services. If you just need to send a few quick texts, you can visit messaging websites like textem.net or txt2day.com. These sites allow users to send free text messages to any phone number. While you can’t receive messages through these websites, the service can be useful when needed.
