This article provides a step-by-step guide on how to view archived messages on Facebook Messenger. When you archive a Facebook conversation, it gets moved to a private section called Archived Chats. These messages can be accessed on a computer, phone, or tablet. If you reply to an archived conversation, it will automatically return to your main inbox.
Steps
Using a phone or tablet
Open Facebook Messenger. The icon is a purple and blue chat bubble with a white lightning bolt. You can usually find this app on your home screen, in the app list, or by searching for it.
Tap on your profile picture. You'll see the image at the top left corner of the screen.
Tap on Archived Chats in the first selection group. Look for the purple icon with a white file box.
Manage archived conversations. Once you find the hidden conversation, you can perform the following actions:
- Tap any conversation to view its contents.
- To move an archived conversation back to your main inbox, simply reply to the message. Alternatively, swipe the conversation left from the list and tap Unarchive.
- To permanently delete a conversation, swipe left, tap More, and select Delete.
Archive a conversation (optional). If you wish to archive a conversation in the future, just swipe left on the chat from the list and select Archive.
Using a computer
Access https://www.facebook.com/messages via your browser. As soon as you log into Facebook, the Messenger inbox will appear. If you are not logged in, enter your login details to proceed with this action immediately.
Click on the three horizontal dots ••• . This option can be found at the top left of the page, next to "Chats".
Click on Archived Chats (Saved conversations). This option is located in the middle of the menu, next to the rectangular icon with an "x" symbol. This will display all the archived conversations.
Manage archived conversations. Now you can take the following actions after locating the hidden conversation:
- Click on the conversation to view its content.
- To move the archived conversation back to the main inbox, simply reply to the message. Alternatively, if you don't want to reply, hover over the conversation on the left panel, click the three dots that appear, and select Unarchive Chat.
- To permanently delete a conversation, click on the three dots next to the conversation, select Delete Chat, and click Delete Chat to confirm.
Archive a conversation (optional). If you wish to archive a conversation in the future, locate the conversation in your Chat list, tap the three dots, and select Archive.
Advice
- You can save a conversation on your phone or tablet by swiping it to the left and selecting Archive.
- If you're using a computer, click on the three dots on the conversation and select Archive.
