For many, braided hair is not only a stylish choice but also a natural method to encourage hair growth, minimizing the impact of harsh weather conditions. However, without proper maintenance, braids can quickly turn into a disaster. Below are some tips to help you care for your braids effectively.
Steps
Washing Braided Hair Correctly

Choose the right shampoo and conditioner. While you can use any shampoo or conditioner, it’s best to opt for highly moisturizing products, especially if your scalp is dry and itchy. Consider products like Shea Moisture African Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo or Giovanni Tea Triple Treat Shampoo, which are designed for dry scalps and thick hair.

Apply a generous amount of shampoo to your scalp. Spread the shampoo evenly across your hair, gently scratching and massaging your scalp, paying extra attention to itchy areas.
- Lather the shampoo in your palms before applying it to make the process smoother.
- If preferred, you can use a simple (or high-end) spray bottle to apply diluted shampoo to your hair. You can also mix a moisturizing oil into the spray bottle along with water and shampoo.

Bend your head over the sink and rinse your hair. Let the shampoo suds flow through your braids. Avoid excessive scrubbing to prevent tangling the braids. Instead, focus on massaging your scalp.

Shampoo again. During this second wash, after thoroughly cleansing your scalp, squeeze the braids to remove deeply embedded dirt. Rinse once more, then gently wring out the braids to remove excess water.

Apply conditioner. Use your fingers to work the conditioner into your braids, being careful not to rub or twist them. Instead, press gently to allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply. Then, cover all the braids with a shower cap. Leave the conditioner in for about 15 minutes before removing the cap and rinsing with water.

Dry your braids by wrapping them in a large towel. Wrap all the braids in the towel for about 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, remove the towel and let your hair air dry naturally before applying any moisturizing oil.
Caring for Braids Before Styling and Between Washes

Apply oil before braiding. Avoid braiding your hair when it is brittle, weak, or overly stressed. Using a nourishing oil, preferably one containing Vitamin E, will help restore your hair and make the braiding process smoother.

Braid your hair correctly. Proper braiding not only makes maintenance easier but also ensures healthier hair once the braids are removed. Here are some key points to follow for proper braiding:
- Ensure the braids are neatly sectioned.
- Use gentle, even tension to avoid excessive strain on the scalp.
- Avoid braiding too tightly.
- Keep braids in for no longer than two months.
- Re-braid when significant hair growth is noticeable.
- Choose a braiding style that suits your hair type and scalp condition.

Wash your braids weekly. You can wash your braids once a week to keep them clean without overloading your hair with too many products. If you have an oily scalp, regular weekly washing is essential.
- For very dry hair, washing every two weeks is acceptable, but avoid doing so too frequently.

Moisturize your scalp with lightweight products between washes. Consider using products like Shea Moisture Curl and Shine Mist or Shea Radiance Moisture Milk. Alternatively, natural oils such as coconut oil, shea butter, or olive oil can also be effective.

Use a hair wrap or scarf while sleeping. This helps prevent braids from tangling or catching fabric fibers. Opt for satin or silk scarves instead of cotton, as cotton absorbs moisture and can leave your hair dry.
