Today, there are countless shampoos and conditioners available for both men and women to choose from! Identifying the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair is crucial. This is because finding the right product for your hair is essential to achieving soft, shiny, and healthy hair. Combining the right shampoo and conditioner with the appropriate hair care techniques will give you the healthy, beautiful hair you desire.
Steps
Washing your hair
Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. You need to wet your hair completely before applying shampoo. It’s best to wash your hair with warm water, as it helps open up the hair cuticles. Once your hair is wet with warm water, you can effectively remove the dirt and impurities. Additionally, warm water helps your hair and scalp better absorb the nutrients in your conditioner.
- Make sure your hair is fully wet before applying shampoo.
- Consider using a water filter to remove harmful minerals, which can make your hair cleaner and softer.

If you have long hair, it’s recommended to apply conditioner before shampooing. This may seem unusual, but if your hair is longer than shoulder-length, the ends require extra nourishment to maintain strength. Apply a coin-sized amount of conditioner to your palms and gently massage it into the ends of your hair. This method helps prevent split ends and adds extra shine to your hair!
Gently massage the shampoo into the roots of your hair. For short or shoulder-length hair, use a coin-sized amount of shampoo in your palms. If your hair is longer than shoulder-length, you can double the amount. Rub the shampoo in your hands and gently apply it to the roots, massaging rather than scrubbing. Be sure to focus on the area at the back of your neck.
- Be gentle; avoid scrubbing or twisting your hair! You don’t want to damage or disrupt the hair cuticle.

Avoid applying shampoo to the ends of your hair if it’s long. Focus the shampoo application on your roots, where oil is primarily produced. You should use a minimal amount of shampoo, or none at all, on the ends of your hair, as this area tends to be the oldest and driest.
- If you have a lot of buildup on your hair, consider using a clarifying shampoo once a week.
Rinse your hair and gently squeeze out excess water. Rinse your hair with warm water until the shampoo is completely washed out. If your hair is short, use your fingers to remove excess water. For longer hair, gently squeeze the hair from the roots to the ends in preparation for applying conditioner.
Use Conditioner for Hair
Apply conditioner evenly to your hair if it's shorter than 7 cm. You can use a coin-sized amount of conditioner. Leave it on for about 2 and a half minutes, and take this time to shave or shower. If you're using conditioner for normal hair, you can apply it daily.
- Rinse your hair thoroughly with warm water. If your hair feels greasy, it may be because you didn't rinse it properly after applying conditioner.
Apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends if your hair is fairly long. Rub a coin-sized amount of conditioner between your palms. You don’t need to apply conditioner to the scalp as it already produces natural oils.
- Clip your hair up and finish your shower. The longer you leave the conditioner in, the more your hair will absorb its nutrients. You can leave the clip in the bathroom for the next use.
- It’s fine to tie your hair up, but avoid making it too tight as this can damage the hair cuticle. Remember, wet hair is the weakest.
- You can also use a shower cap to keep the conditioner from washing out while you shower.

Leave the conditioner in for 10 minutes after showering if your hair is fairly long. This method is ideal if you want to quickly finish your shower or if your hair is quite dry. It will allow your hair to absorb the conditioner more effectively. You can clip your hair or wrap it in a towel to keep it out of the way.
Rinse your long hair with cool water to seal the cuticle. Cool water helps retain moisture and natural oils, leaving your hair shinier. Your hair will appear healthier if you consistently follow this step during your hair wash routine.
- Make sure to rinse all the conditioner out of your hair. Any remaining conditioner can weigh your hair down, making it look limp and greasy.
Use dry conditioner. Dry conditioner is suitable for both men and women. It strengthens hair and enhances its elasticity. After showering, you can apply dry conditioner to damp hair.
- In Vietnam, brands like Loreal, Tony & Guy, and Chi offer dry conditioner products for men.
- Some men find that dry conditioner helps their hair stay styled better if they wash it every day.
Choosing the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

Choose a regular shampoo and conditioner for normal hair if your hair is shorter than 7 cm. 9 out of 10 people with hair shorter than 7 cm can use regular shampoo. However, if your scalp is either overly oily or too dry, look for shampoos designed for oily hair or dandruff control.

Add volume to fine, flat, or oily hair. These products are known as volumizing shampoos in the women's section and thickening shampoos in the men's section of the store. They can make your hair appear thicker.
- Avoid shampoos and conditioners with too much cream as they can weigh down your hair. Opt for a mild shampoo that you can use daily or every other day.
- If you’re struggling with oily hair, you can use dry shampoo between washes. Men can and should use dry shampoo as it helps keep hair fresh even without washing! Dry shampoo is also great for adding texture and thickness to fine hair.
- If your hair is greasy, you might skip conditioner altogether. Consider using a spray conditioner or a light tea tree-based conditioner to absorb excess oils from your hair.

Strengthen hair that has been chemically treated with protein-based shampoos. If you color your hair or use chemical styling treatments, look for shampoos that contain wheat, soy extracts, or hydrolyzed silk amino acids. For men, shampoos and conditioners specifically for treated hair aren’t widely available yet; however, you can use products designed for women to protect your color. Look for shampoos that protect hair color or use baby shampoos that are gentle enough not to strip your hair’s color.
- Only apply conditioner to the ends of your hair if it's long. The scalp already produces enough natural oils, so you only need to apply conditioner from the mid-lengths to the tips.
- Avoid conditioners with silicone, as they can fade your hair color. To protect your color, it's also best not to wash your hair every day, as frequent washing can lead to color fading.

Look for smoothing shampoos if you have curly or coarse hair. Shampoos suitable for this hair type typically contain oils such as wheat germ, macadamia, almond, or shea butter. You can also use shampoos and conditioners containing glycerin or silicone to maintain moisture in your hair.
- Consider regularly treating your hair to a hot oil treatment to keep your curls in check.
- Use a deep moisturizing conditioner every time you wash your hair to keep it hydrated.

Use a cream-based shampoo if your hair is quite dry or curly. Coconut oil, argan oil, grape seed oil, and avocado oil are excellent for dry hair. You should also use an ultra-moisturizing conditioner every time you wash your hair.
- If your hair is dry or curly, you may want to choose shampoos designed specifically for dry or color-treated hair, as they provide extra moisture for your hair.

Alternate your shampoos if you're dealing with dandruff. This is the best approach to tackle dandruff. Shampoos containing salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, and selenium sulfide are quite effective in treating dandruff. You should also switch between regular shampoos or moisturizing shampoos if your hair is getting damaged from constant use of dandruff shampoos.
- If dandruff persists, try rinsing your hair with apple cider vinegar after shampooing to prevent fungal and bacterial growth.
