Easy ways to spectate a Fortnite match
Want to watch your friends play Fortnite without jumping in? It's simple to spectate from the lobby. You can also watch while sitting out, but you'll need to rejoin as a spectator if you want to see multiple matches. Here’s how to watch both your friends and random players in Fortnite, whether you're on PC, Xbox, PS4, PS5, Switch, or mobile.
Quick Instructions
- Wait for your friends to start a match.
- Join their party.
- Wait for at least 30 seconds after they leave the bus.
- Select Watch or Watch Game.
Detailed Steps
Watching Friends Play

Wait for your friend to start a match. If you'd like to spectate a friend without actually joining the match, make sure they are already in a game. Otherwise, you'll be queued together.

Join your friend's party. You must first have them added to your friend list to proceed.

Click Watch. This is where the Play or Ready button would normally appear.
- If you don't see this button, give it 30 seconds. You won’t be able to spectate while your friend is still on the battle bus.
- If the button is still unavailable, or you can't find it, open your Social tab, select your friend, and then click Watch Game.
Watching Enemies

Getting eliminated allows you to watch your opponent. If you’re taken out in a solo match or your whole team is eliminated, a menu will appear over the spectator preview. Click Spectate to watch the player who eliminated you.
- You can keep spectating until that player is eliminated or they win the game.
- If you want to switch to a different player, click Next Player or Previous Player at the bottom of the screen.
What can I do while spectating?

While spectating, you can ping the map and view different perspectives. Note that this only applies if you’re spectating after being eliminated. If you’re spectating a friend from outside the match, you’re limited to just watching.
- After getting eliminated, make your spectating count by pinging locations on the map, highlighting loot or landmarks, switching between your teammates' perspectives, and giving callouts to help your team secure the win.
