Preparing to Write a Hypothesis
Forming Your Hypothesis
Advice
- When reviewing literature, look for studies similar to the one you plan to conduct, and build upon the findings of other researchers. At the same time, pay attention to any claims you find questionable and test them yourself.
- Your hypothesis should be specific, but not so much so that it only applies to your particular experiment. It's important to have a clear understanding of the overall research topic. However, no one (except your roommates) will be interested in reading a report with the prediction: "The number of push-ups my three roommates can do will vary."
- Don't let personal feelings or opinions interfere with your research. A hypothesis should never be framed as: "I believe that...", "I think that...", "I feel that...", or "In my opinion...".
- Remember, science doesn't always have to be a linear process, and there are many ways to approach it.
