Restore app download functionality on your iPhone
Apps refusing to download on your iPhone? To install third-party apps from the App Store, make sure your payment method is active and you have no unpaid balances. Here’s what to try if app downloads are stuck.
Why Won’t My iPhone Let Me Download Apps?
Unable to install apps on your iPhone? A billing issue might be the cause. Ensure your Apple ID has a valid payment card linked and no overdue charges. If your payment details are correct, review your Screen Time restrictions to confirm downloads are permitted.
How to Fix It
Review your Screen Time settings.

Screen Time might be blocking app downloads. If someone else manages your device, ask them to adjust the Screen Time settings or disable it entirely.
- Open Settings.
- Select Screen Time.
- Choose Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- Tap iTunes & App Store Purchases.
- Select Installing Apps.
- Set it to Allow.
Link a payment method.

Ensure a valid payment method is linked to your account. Even free apps on the App Store require one. To add it:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap your Apple ID at the top.
- Tap Payment & Shipping.
- Sign in if prompted.
- Select Add Payment Method.
- Fill in your payment info.
- Tap Done to save.
Look into any payment issues.

Outstanding payment problems can block app downloads. If you get alerts like "verification required" or "billing problem with previous purchase," clear those up first.
- Have a negative balance? Add a new card or redeem a gift card to cover it.
- Need to verify your card? Check with your bank or re-enter your details on Apple ID.
Test your internet connection.

Confirm that your Wi-Fi is working properly. By default, iPhones download apps over Wi-Fi. If using mobile data, ensure the signal is strong and downloads are allowed.
- If issues persist, fix your internet connection.
Stop other downloads temporarily.

Hold off on less important app updates. When multiple apps are updating, pause the non-essentials to free up bandwidth. Here's how:
- Locate the app on your home screen.
- Tap and hold the app icon.
- Select Pause Download.
Move the download to the top of the queue.

Prioritize the app you want first. When several apps are updating, you can speed up the one you need most:
- Locate the app on your home screen.
- Tap and hold the app icon.
- Select Prioritize Download.
Review your Date & Time settings.

An incorrect date or time can interfere with device functions. Follow these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Tap Date & Time.
- Enable Set Automatically.
Reboot your iPhone.

Power your iPhone off completely, then turn it back on. This simple soft reset can clear up minor glitches.
