How to Fix No Sound on iPhone Videos
If the sound is missing from your iPhone videos, it's most likely because Silent Mode was enabled or a software issue occurred. While it's impossible to recover the sound, there are several steps you can take to avoid this problem in the future. Here's how to troubleshoot if your iPhone videos have no sound.
If your iPhone videos are playing without sound, Silent Mode might have been on during recording. To check if the video was muted manually, open it and tap Edit. Ensure that the volume icon doesn't have a slash through it.
Steps to Resolve:
Unmute the video.
Enter edit mode to verify if it's muted. With newer iOS updates, it's possible to mute videos in the Camera Roll. To check and unmute it, follow these steps:
- Open the video in the Photos app.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
- Tap the volume icon (it should not have a slash).
- Tap Done.
- Play the video again.
Check your volume buttons.
Increase the volume using the Volume Up button. You should see the volume bar rise on the left side of your screen. Alternatively, swipe up to access the Control Center and adjust the volume from the tile.
- If your device has a volume switch, ensure the orange side is not visible.
Turn off Bluetooth.
Disable Bluetooth and other connected devices. Your sound may be directed to another Bluetooth device. Once turned off, try playing your video at full volume again.
Disable Silent Mode.
Turn off Silent Mode. This also includes Focus modes such as Do Not Disturb. When enabled, this mode mutes all sounds, including notifications and device audio. Before recording, ensure Silent Mode is off.
- To disable, open the Control Center and make sure the Focus tile is not active.
Verify app permissions.
Ensure your microphone is enabled. The app you're using to record may have microphone access restricted. To check and enable permissions, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Microphone.
- Ensure the app is toggled on.
Restart your iPhone.
Fully power off and restart your iPhone. If a standard restart doesn't resolve the issue, try performing a hard restart. Here’s how:
- Quickly press and release the top volume button.
- Quickly press and release the bottom volume button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
Check your microphone functionality.
Test your microphone using Voice Memos. If you’re not hearing any sound in your iPhone videos, the issue might be with your microphone. Open the Voice Memos app and record your voice.
- If playback is silent, the problem could be with your microphone. Consider cleaning it with a dry, soft-bristled brush.
- Alternatively, try recording with headphones that have a built-in microphone.
Switch to a different camera app.
Try recording with another app. If your iPhone videos lack sound when using the Camera app, try recording with a different app like Snapchat or TikTok, or even download a third-party camera app.
- If the sound works fine on the other apps, the problem might lie with the Camera app itself. Close it and reopen it to refresh.
Update your device's software.
Ensure your iPhone is up-to-date. Software updates fix crucial bugs. To update your device, follow these steps:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install.
Try listening on another device.
Move the files to another device and play them there. You can transfer your files from your iPhone to a computer via email, a cloud service, or a wired connection.
- If the videos play correctly, the issue is likely with your iPhone.
Reset your settings.
Reset your network settings. Please note that this will erase your saved Wi-Fi networks and cellular settings, so you'll need to reconfigure them afterward.
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings.
