Discover how to create this unique archaeology tool in Minecraft
Want to craft a Brush in Minecraft but don't know where to start? This guide is here to help! The Brush is a handy archaeology item used to gently uncover hidden treasures in suspicious blocks. It’s also useful for collecting armadillo scutes. Follow along as we show you how to make and use the Brush effectively.
Crafting and Using the Minecraft Brush
To make a Brush, combine one Feather, one Copper Ingot, and one Stick. You can also merge worn Brushes to restore durability. Use Brushes on suspicious blocks to reveal hidden items, or on armadillos to collect armadillo scutes.

Brush Crafting Guide

Create a new Brush. To craft a Brush, you'll need a Feather, a Copper Ingot, and a Stick. Arrange them in the crafting grid with the Copper Ingot in the center, the Stick directly below it, and the Feather above it.
- Feathers can be collected by defeating chickens and parrots, looted from foxes, found in Shipwreck and Village chests, or gifted by tamed cats in the morning.
- Copper Ingots are made by smelting Raw Copper or blocks of Copper, and sometimes dropped by Drowned mobs.
- Sticks can be crafted from planks or bamboo, found as fishing junk, dropped from bushes or Witches, or discovered in chests from Desert Wells and Villages.

Repair Brushes by combining them. Put one worn Brush in the center of the crafting grid, and another to its left. The new Brush will gain durability equal to the combined durability of both, plus an extra 5%.
Brush Functions

Suspicious Blocks Using a Brush on a suspicious block gradually reveals an item over approximately 5 seconds. After the item is revealed, the block becomes sand or gravel, and the Brush loses 1 point of durability.
- If used on non-suspicious blocks, the Brush animation and breaking particles will appear, but neither the block nor the Brush will take damage.

Armadillo Scutes Using a Brush on an armadillo causes it to drop an armadillo scute, consuming 13 durability points per use. With a total of 64 durability, a single Brush can be used 4 times for this purpose.
- Since armadillos naturally drop scutes roughly every minute without interaction, using a Brush might not be the most efficient choice unless you need them quickly.
How Useful Is the Brush?

The Brush isn’t among Minecraft’s most versatile tools. Given that armadillos produce scutes passively, its usage is limited. It's a niche item, mainly for archaeology and scute gathering. Prioritize crafting tools like the Axe, which serve more practical functions, before investing in a Brush.
