What causes my Chromebook to freeze on the Chrome logo?
A Chromebook freezing up often points to an OS problem. A hard reset usually resolves it. If that fails, you can do a factory reset via the Recovery menu—but remember, this will wipe all data from your device.
- Once your Chromebook is working again, keep it updated to prevent future issues.
Fixing the Issue
Disconnect all accessories. Unplug any external keyboard, mouse, or monitor. This helps rule out external devices as the cause.
- If you're facing a black screen, connecting an external monitor may help with diagnostics.
Hold down Esc+Refresh+Power together. This shortcut will force your Chromebook to reboot. These keys are located in the top row of your keyboard.
Force restart your Chromebook. The method depends on your model.
- For most devices: hold the Power button until it shuts down, then press and hold the Refresh button until the login screen appears.
- For older Chromebooks: press and hold Back + Refresh + Power for 10 seconds.
Use Recovery Mode. If you're able to access the Recovery Menu, you might be able to restore your Chromebook. Be aware that this will erase all files and data.
- To launch Recovery Mode, press Esc + Refresh + Power.
Reach out to the manufacturer. If your Chromebook remains unresponsive, it could be a hardware failure. If it's still under warranty, your manufacturer can guide you on repair options.
