Green Beans are a popular crop in Stardew Valley, but finding Green Bean seeds might leave you scratching your head. The secret? They aren't grown from regular seeds—they come from a Bean Starter, which acts as a special planting item that yields beans all season long. In this guide, we’ll show you how to plant and harvest Green Beans, fulfill the Green Bean Crop Order, and explore other ways to use your harvest in the game.
Where to Get Green Beans in Stardew Valley
Green Beans are harvested by planting Bean Starters in the Spring season. You can find Bean Starters at the General Store, JojaMart, the Traveling Cart, or the Night Market. These starters will produce a steady supply of Green Beans throughout the season, yielding between 6 to 8 beans per starter during Spring.
How to Grow Green Beans: A Step-by-Step Guide
Growing Green Beans in Stardew Valley
Get a Bean Starter. To grow Green Beans, you need Bean Starters. These can be purchased from several locations:
- Pierre's General Store (60 gold)
- JojaMart (75 gold)
- Traveling Cart (100 to 1,000 gold)
- Night Market (60 gold)
- Alternatively, you can create Bean Starters using the Seed Maker, find them in treasure rooms in the Skull Cavern, or receive them as a gift from Mystery Boxes or Golden Mystery Boxes.
Plant your Bean Starters. You can plant Bean Starters in Spring, or anytime during the year if you have a Greenhouse. Keep in mind that, unlike most crops, you cannot walk through Bean Starters once they’ve been planted.
- Ensure there's at least one adjacent tile available for harvesting your beans.
Wait for your beans to mature. After 10 in-game days, your Bean Starters will be ready for harvest. Each starter will produce one Green Bean. After that, another Green Bean will be ready every 3 days.
Harvest your Green Beans. Without using fertilizer or the Agriculturist profession (a level 10 Farming skill you can unlock after choosing Tiller at level 5), you’ll get 6 Green Beans per Bean Starter if planted early in the season.
- With fertilizer, you can harvest 7 to 8 Green Beans per Bean Starter. Speed-Gro and Deluxe Speed-Gro will give 7 beans, while Hyper Speed-Gro gives 8.
- If you have the Agriculturist profession and no fertilizer, each Bean Starter will yield 7 beans per season.
- Using fertilizer with the Agriculturist profession boosts the yield slightly. Speed-Gro still gives 7 beans, Hyper Speed-Gro still yields 8 beans, but Deluxe Speed-Gro increases the yield to 8 beans per starter.
Green Bean Special Order Quest
The Crop Order quest may request Green Beans during Spring. Once you unlock the Special Order board outside the Mayor's house, you may receive a Crop Order quest for Green Beans in Spring. This Special Order will require you to ship 100 Green Beans throughout the season. You must complete the order while the quest is active, with a maximum of 28 days to finish it.
The number of Bean Starters to plant depends on several factors. If you begin the Crop Order on the first day of Spring, you will need to plant the following minimum number of Bean Starters to ship 100 Green Beans before the season ends:

- No fertilizer or Agriculturist: 17 Bean Starters
- Speed-Gro or Deluxe Speed-Gro fertilizer without Agriculturist: 15 Bean Starters

Starting the quest later in the season can complicate your planning. While fertilizer and the Agriculturist profession can reduce the growing time for Bean Starters, the regrowth time is fixed at 3 days. To estimate how many Bean Starters you need to plant if you don't start at the beginning of Spring, calculate how many harvests you'll get based on the following growth times:
- No fertilizer or Agriculturist: 10 days to maturity
- Agriculturist without fertilizer: 8 days to maturity
- Speed-Gro fertilizer with no Agriculturist: 8 days to maturity
- Speed-Gro fertilizer with Agriculturist: 7 days to maturity
- Deluxe Speed-Gro fertilizer with no Agriculturist: 7 days to maturity
- Deluxe Speed-Gro fertilizer with Agriculturist: 6 days to maturity
- Hyper Speed-Gro fertilizer with no Agriculturist: 6 days to maturity
- Hyper Speed-Gro fertilizer with Agriculturist: 6 days to maturity
Other Uses for Green Beans
Bundles Green Beans play a part in two Community Center bundles:
- 1 Green Bean is needed for the Spring Crops Bundle.
- 5 Green Beans of gold quality may be required for the remixed Quality Crops bundle.
Recipes Green Beans are the key ingredient in one recipe: Bean Hotpot. This dish requires 2 Green Beans to prepare.
- Bean Hotpot restores 125 health and 56 energy, while also granting the Max Energy and Magnetism buffs for 7 minutes.
- The recipe for Bean Hotpot can be obtained by receiving a letter from Clint after reaching 7 hearts with him.
Help Wanted Quests During Spring, the Help Wanted board may feature a request for a Green Bean. Completing the quest rewards you with 120 gold and 150 friendship points with the person who posted the request.
Gifting All villagers appreciate Green Beans, except for Abigail, Haley, Jas, Sam, and Vincent. While Green Beans can serve as an acceptable gift for any villager who enjoys them, they are better reserved for other uses.
Tailoring A single Green Bean can be used with Cloth to create the Shirt And Belt top on the Sewing Machine. Additionally, Green Beans can be used as green dye for crafting in the Sewing Machine or dye pots.
