Get Your iPhone Volume Buttons Working Again
Can't change the volume on your iPhone? If pressing the top or bottom buttons does nothing, it could be caused by software glitches or hardware trouble. Fortunately, there are several ways to troubleshoot and solve the problem. Try these fixes to restore your volume controls.
What Causes iPhone Volume Button Problems?
An unresponsive iPhone volume button might be linked to incorrect settings, software errors, silent mode, or even debris clogging the buttons. Check if "Change with Buttons" is turned on in Settings > Sound & Haptics.
How to Fix It
Review your Sound settings.
Ensure "Change with Buttons" is switched on. If this setting is off, your iPhone's physical buttons won’t adjust ringtone or alert volume — only the Control Center or settings can. To enable it:
- Go to Settings.
- Select Sound & Haptics.
- Activate Change with Buttons.
Disable Silent Mode.
Confirm the ringer switch is in the up position. Avoid seeing the orange strip. If Do Not Disturb is active, launch Control Center and tap the moon icon to deactivate it.
Try using the volume buttons in another app.
Try another app to check if volume works. If volume control fails only in one specific app, the app might be the problem. Try restarting it or updating it from the App Store to resolve the issue.
Reboot your iPhone.

Install the latest iOS update.
Make sure your iPhone is running the latest software. A system update might fix volume button issues. Follow these steps:
