Quick Solutions for Fixing a Flickering Chromebook Screen
If your Chromebook's screen keeps flashing or turning black and white, try these fast solutions to resolve the issue. Here's what causes your screen to flicker and how you can fix display problems.
What Causes My Chromebook Screen to Glitch?
A flickering screen on your Chromebook could result from a malfunctioning display, problematic Chrome flags, or outdated software. To resolve this, ensure your Chromebook is updated and reset the Chrome flags. You may also want to connect an external monitor to verify whether the issue is with the screen itself.
How to Fix It
Try restarting your Chromebook.

Power cycle your Chromebook. If your Chromebook's screen is flickering or you're encountering a black screen, restarting it can resolve many common software glitches. Follow these steps:
- Press and hold the Power button until the screen turns off.
- Wait for at least one minute.
- Press the Power button again to turn it back on.
Reset Chrome Flags.

Restore default Chrome flags. Chrome flags let you enable developer or experimental features that aren't active by default. To reset them, follow these steps:
- Open Chrome.
- Type chrome://flags into the address bar.
- Press Enter.
- Click Reset all.
- Click Restart to reboot your computer.
Try an external monitor.

Use a different monitor with your Chromebook. Connect a monitor to your Chromebook using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable, depending on your device.
- If the screen appears normal on the external monitor, it's likely your Chromebook's screen is damaged. In that case, you'll need to have it repaired professionally.
Ensure your Chromebook is up-to-date.

Keep your Chromebook updated. Chromebooks typically check for updates automatically. Make sure you're connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet to complete the update process.
- You should receive an Update available notification. Click on it and choose Restart to Update to complete the process.
Adjust your display size.

Modify your Chromebook's display size. If you previously adjusted the display size, the new setting might not be suitable for your screen. To change it, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings menu.
- Select Device.
- Click on Displays.
- Move the Display size slider to the left to reduce the size.
Perform a factory reset on your Chromebook.

Perform a Powerwash. This is the Chromebook version of a factory reset, which will erase all your files and data. Be sure to back up your device before starting.
- Open Settings.
- Click Advanced.
- Select Reset settings.
- Under Powerwash, click Reset.
- Click Restart.
- Click Powerwash.
Reach out to a repair technician.

Get in touch with your Chromebook manufacturer. If the screen continues to flicker, the problem is likely with the screen itself. A professional repair technician can replace it for you. A list of manufacturers and their contact numbers can be found here.
