Bring Discord Overlay Back to Life in Any Game
Discord Overlay lets you see your Discord activity while gaming in full-screen mode, but it can be accidentally disabled. Make sure it’s switched on before diving into other fixes. Note: Mac devices don’t support this feature. Here's how to get Discord Overlay working again on Windows 10 or 11.
Resolving Discord Overlay Problems
- Check that Overlay is turned on in Settings > Game Overlay.
- Ensure your game is listed in Registered Games and the monitor icon isn’t crossed out.
- Restart both your game and Discord, then launch Discord as an administrator.

Fixing Discord Overlay Glitches
Run Discord with admin rights. Exit both Discord and your game completely. Ensure Discord isn't still active in the system tray. Right-click the Discord shortcut and choose Run as administrator. Hit OK to confirm.
- Once Discord restarts, launch your game again.
Verify that Game Overlay is turned on. It might’ve been disabled by an update. To re-enable it:
- Launch Discord.
- Click the settings cog icon.
- Select Game Overlay from the sidebar.
- Toggle Enable in-game overlay to ON.
Manually register your game in Discord. If your game isn’t detected, you’ll need to add it. Follow these steps:
- Open Discord.
- Click the settings cog.
- Go to Registered Games.
- Click Add it!
- Select your game from the dropdown.
- Click Add Game.
- If the monitor icon has a slash, click it to enable overlay.
Disable Hardware Acceleration in Discord. Though it enhances performance, it can clash with other software. To turn it off:
- Open Discord.
- Click the settings cog.
- Go to Advanced.
- Switch off Hardware Acceleration.
- Restart Discord.
Temporarily turn off your antivirus software. Sometimes, antivirus programs can interfere with Discord or your game. Try to disable it briefly, then relaunch both Discord and the game.
Reinstall Discord from scratch. If the overlay is still broken, Discord might have corrupted files. Perform a full uninstall, then grab a fresh copy from the official Discord site.
What’s causing Discord Overlay to malfunction?
Settings issues, bugs, or unsupported games can stop Discord Overlay from working. Features like Hardware Acceleration or blocked permissions from antivirus tools can interfere with overlay display.

- Age of Empires II HD, Archeage, Arma 3, Call of Duty: WWII, DayZ, Destiny 2, Dolphin, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Elite Dangerous, Elsword, Fallout: New Vegas, Final Fantasy XIV, Forza Horizon 3, Half-Life, Killing Floor 2, Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, Paladins, PlanetSide 2, PokerStars, PCSX2, Ragnarok Online, Roblox, RuneScape, SteamVR, Street Fighter V, and Warface.
