What Makes a Good Friend?
No matter the type of friend you are, you play a vital role in your friend group! Here are some tips on being a great friend, no matter your unique role among your peers.
Good friends offer support. Friendship means being there for each other when needed. A good friend may not be able to solve all your problems, but they'll always lend a hand when possible. Whether it's offering words of encouragement before an important event or giving you a ride when you're in need, a good friend will show up when you need them.
They lift each other up. Friends should bring positivity into each other's lives. True friends make one another feel good by offering compliments, celebrating achievements, or just showing appreciation for the friendship. For example, a good friend might say, “I love your outfit today!” or “You’re so talented! I adore that drawing!” They are never shy about recognizing each other's worth.
Friends accept each other’s individuality. In every friend group, everyone is unique. Sure, you share some interests, but there are likely many differences, too. True friends embrace these differences, supporting one another's unique passions without judgment. They respect your need for personal time and space and encourage you to express what matters to you, no matter how different it may be from their own interests.
They listen without judgment. Had a rough day and need someone to talk to? A true friend will listen with intent and offer a supportive shoulder to lean on. A good friend doesn’t dismiss your feelings or tune you out. They’re genuinely interested in what you have to say and are ready to provide a safe space to discuss anything on your mind.
They’re trustworthy. A good friend will respect your privacy and keep your secrets safe. Trust is a cornerstone of friendship, and a reliable friend knows how to be discreet and loyal, never betraying your trust to others. They will hear you out without judgment and help you carry any burdens that are too heavy to carry alone.
They respect each other's boundaries. Disagreements can happen, but a good friend will always communicate openly and respectfully if something goes wrong. If they've hurt you, they’ll own up to it and make sure not to repeat the mistake. If you ask them to respect a boundary, they will honor it, like refraining from discussing sensitive topics when requested.
Remember, friendship is a two-way street. Both you and your friend should aim to be supportive, respectful, and loyal in equal measure to maintain a balanced and healthy relationship.
