What Does Brainrot Mean?
Brainrot is a term used to describe individuals who are deeply immersed in social media and internet culture. If someone is suffering from brainrot, they're probably up-to-date with the latest TikTok challenges, memes, and celebrity gossip. They spend much of their time scrolling, often finding reasons to stay glued to their phones. In essence, they live for social media. According to a 2019 study, 9.4% of young people in the U.S. are affected by brainrot, which is clinically referred to as Problematic Interactive Media Use.
This excessive and often obsessive use of social media can take a toll on mental health. Research indicates that constant scrolling can lead to brain overload, reduce attention spans, and cause mental fatigue. Moreover, prolonged exposure to fast-paced, bite-sized content can negatively affect both mental and physical well-being.
So, how can you combat the effects of brainrot?
- Follow drama-free accounts. Curating your social media environment to be uplifting and enriching can make it more positive and supportive.
- Limit your screen time. Set specific periods for phone use throughout the day, track your screen time, and aim to cut it in half.
- Engage in mentally stimulating activities. Swap phone scrolling for puzzles, reading, or other activities that make you think.
- Practice mindfulness. Focus on the present moment and life outside your device. Remember, not everything needs to be shared with your followers.
- Stick to a healthy sleep routine. Strive to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night for better overall health.
