Have you ever found your car keys in the fridge or noticed that Alexa seems to locate your phone faster than you can? This might be a sign that your living area has become cluttered, especially if you’re adjusting to the “new normal” and still working from home.
Don’t feel bad if you’re not as tidy as Marie Kondo—experts explain that it’s challenging to stick to systems designed for others rather than tailored to your personal needs and preferences. “Your personality is crucial for staying organized because everyone’s brain works differently,” says Kelly McMenamin, co-author of Organize Your Way: Simple Strategies for Every Personality and co-founder of PixiesDidIt!, a home organization service that helps clients organize based on their unique traits.
“Trying to stay organized while pretending to be someone you’re not is unlikely to work,” McMenamin explains to Mytour. Instead, she emphasizes the importance of incorporating your personal style into your organization methods. “Begin by evaluating your natural tendencies—both good and bad—and create systems that align with these habits,” she suggests.
Of course, clutter can hinder your progress. So, how do you kickstart the process, particularly if you’re someone who hesitates to throw things away? “Start with small steps,” advises Laura Ellis, founder of Organized by Ellis, a home organization company based in Los Angeles. “Avoid beginning with sentimental items like papers or keepsakes. Focus on simpler tasks to organize so you can quickly see and experience the benefits. This will build your confidence and help you gain momentum.”
In addition to making it easier to locate your car keys and other household essentials, experts say that decluttering can significantly improve your mood. “It gives people a sense of control,” explains McMenamin, which can greatly enhance relaxation and mental clarity.
