Humanity’s desire to view the world from a fresh angle is an essential need. The following images of animals developing in the womb offer a completely new perspective on other creatures around us, prompting us to stop and take a moment to contemplate the wonder of life itself.
10. Dolphin

This photograph captures a bottlenose dolphin at approximately six months of gestation. Bottlenose dolphins thrive in warm ocean waters and give birth after a twelve-month pregnancy. At this stage, tiny teeth begin to form within the fetus’s mouth, and its tail flukes are starting to develop.
9. Elephant

At the halfway mark of its remarkable twenty-two-month gestation, this Asian elephant resembles a perfect, miniature version of its adult relatives. The tiny trunk has already formed, and you can spot small hooves. Unlike humans, baby elephants maintain their physical proportions into adulthood.
8. Tiger Shark

Sharks are an anomaly among fish, as they give birth in a manner similar to mammals. This tiger shark is destined to become one of the ocean’s most formidable predators. Even while still in the womb, its razor-sharp teeth are clearly visible and just as menacing. These teeth even enable it to consume its unborn siblings if it feels the need. This species is responsible for fatal attacks almost every year, although most of these incidents could have been prevented.
7. Penguin Peep

Thanks to ultrasound technology, we can peer through the eggshell of this emperor penguin chick. Suspended in the egg’s fluid, it’s just days away from hatching. Soon, it will emerge into one of the coldest places on Earth, with a protective down already formed inside the egg. Attached to its belly is the remaining yolk.
6. Chihuahua

Resembling a small bear, this partially developed chihuahua puppy is already showing early signs of its future canine features. By the time it’s born, its nose will be more pronounced, and its sharp baby teeth will have already formed.
5. Cheetah

Though cats typically avoid water, this two-month-old cheetah—still in the womb—must swim in amniotic fluid. In just a month, it will be born nearly helpless, but will grow into the fastest carnivore on the planet. Even at this stage, the spots that will adorn its fur are already visible.
4. Snake

Captured by ultrasound, a corn snake develops inside its tough, birdlike egg. While their lack of legs might make snakes seem alien and unnerving, they share many features with lizards and young birds, including a distinct brain region and a fully formed spinal column.
3. Polar Bears

Two-thirds of the way through their development, these polar bear cubs already have thick insulating fur and small claws. Their miniature bear bodies appear to be engaged in a bear-like embrace, but sibling rivalry is sure to take over once they are born into what is often a challenging life. As they grow, these cubs will transform into the largest land carnivores.
2. Lemon Shark

This tiny lemon shark, still in its early stages of development, almost looks like a tadpole with its uniquely frilled gill covers. In just a few weeks, it will be born alive and ready to hunt as one of the fastest tropical shark species on Earth. Its first prey will likely be fish, and as it grows, it will even master the art of capturing seabirds.
1. Opossum

This is an exception to the usual pattern. Unlike the others, this opossum was captured without the need for an ultrasound. As a marsupial, it was born while still a fetus and will make its way into its mother's pouch. It will stay there until it matures enough to be ‘born’ once again.
