When faced with the instinct to survive, most living beings will go to extreme lengths to ensure their survival. While self-preservation might not always be the ultimate priority for every life form, it undoubtedly stands as one of the most vital aspects of existence. Achieving a series of goals keeps us alive, provides meaning to our lives, and fuels our sense of purpose, motivating us to push forward. But at times, tough decisions arise, forcing us to make life-or-death choices in extraordinary or perilous situations.
It is fascinating to note that many believe all humans, in some way, trace their lineage back to cannibals, suggesting that our ancient ancestors were willing to go to any length to survive and ensure the human race endured long enough for us to exist today. Even in modern times, people still face similarly harrowing choices—some even resorting to amputating parts of their own bodies in order to achieve those survival goals. Here are ten remarkable individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice, amputating part of themselves to stay alive.
10. Aron Ralston

Aron Ralston was an ordinary guy with a profound adventurous spirit and a passion for traveling the world. As a child, his family relocated to Denver, Colorado, a region brimming with opportunities for mountain climbing, exploration, and ultimately fulfilling his dream of becoming the adventurer he always envisioned. In 2003, while climbing in the remote mountains of Southwestern Utah, Aron found himself in a dire situation: he became trapped in a rock crevice and pinned by a boulder weighing over 360 kilograms (800 lb). The immense weight of the rock crushed his arm, leaving him helpless. As he awaited rescue, Aron even took photographs of his predicament, unaware of how much worse things would get.
But help never arrived. Aron waited for days, his hope dwindling. Realizing that his survival depended on drastic action, he faced a life-or-death decision. With only a pocketknife and trapped 18 meters (59 ft) above the canyon floor, he chose to amputate his own arm below the elbow. He painfully severed the lower part of his arm, breaking the bones against the boulder, and then descended to the canyon floor. There, he began walking in search of help. Miraculously, a helicopter spotted him, drenched in blood. Aron had tied off the wound tightly enough to prevent fatal bleeding and, against all odds, survived.
Despite his harrowing ordeal, Ralston went on to become a motivational speaker and continued his passion for travel and mountain climbing. He refused to let the traumatic experience of cutting off his own arm stop him from doing what he loved most.
9. Michael Lasiter

In 2008, Michael Lasiter attempted to amputate his own arm in a desperate bid to survive—although his efforts were unsuccessful. While in a California motel room, Lasiter injected cocaine into his arm and, convinced that he had injected an air bubble into his vein—something potentially lethal—he panicked. In a frantic state, he fled the room and made his way to a nearby Denny's restaurant. There, he armed himself with a butter knife, attempting to sever his arm, though he was unsuccessful in his attempt.
After his failed attempt at self-amputation, Lasiter stormed into the kitchen of the restaurant, where he grabbed a chef’s knife and began sawing at his arm in a desperate effort to free himself. By this time, the police had arrived and tried to reason with him, urging him to drop the knife. But Lasiter was convinced that death was imminent. In response, the police deployed a Taser to subdue him, allowing them to take him to a nearby hospital. Was Lasiter simply overwhelmed by the drugs, leading to his frantic actions, or did he truly believe he was facing death? The truth may never be revealed.
8. Jonathan Metz

Jonathan Metz, a man from Connecticut, was preparing dinner one evening in June 2010 when an unexpected and life-altering event occurred. While his food cooked, he decided to head to the basement to fix his furnace, only to find himself trapped beneath it. For a full 12 hours, Metz screamed for help, ultimately spending three agonizing days pinned under the furnace.
Realizing no help was on the way, Metz had an unusual thought: “What would MacGyver do in this situation?” Inspired by the resourceful character from the TV show MacGyver, he made a decision that most would consider unimaginable. He retrieved a nearby hacksaw and began attempting to saw off his own arm to escape, making considerable progress before he passed out from exhaustion. A concerned friend, worried by Metz’s prolonged absence, eventually contacted the authorities. Metz was rescued that same day.
Although Metz didn’t fully complete his self-amputation, his actions did ultimately save his life. The doctors finished the procedure later, noting that had he not used the hacksaw to sever the tissues connected to the rest of his body, he would have succumbed to a fatal bacterial infection within a few hours. By attempting to cut off his own arm, Jonathan Metz managed to save his life. He was later fitted with a prosthesis.
7. Jon Hutt

On August 19, 2011, Jon Hutt, a 61-year-old logger from Colorado, found himself in a life-threatening situation in the remote wilderness of Western Colorado. While loading trees onto his trailer, six tons of machinery fell, crushing his foot instantly. Realizing he couldn’t reach anyone for help due to the lack of cell service, Hutt acted swiftly to survive. With no one in sight, he pulled out his pocketknife.
Using his small pocketknife, a tool he always carried in the wilderness, Hutt amputated his own toes in order to free himself and escape to safety. Just a month after the incident, Jon Hutt was back in the wilderness, and he even maintained a sense of humor about the experience after receiving medical treatment.
6. Myron Schlafman

The next incredible self-amputation story comes from an unexpected place: a seemingly innocent, everyday task gone horribly wrong. On August 17, 2018, Myron Schlafman was in his garage making sausage with a meat grinder when disaster struck. While attempting to retrieve some of the meat from the machine, he accidentally stepped on the foot pedal, causing his left arm to be pulled into the grinder. His hand was mangled, and the bones in his arm were shattered, but he remained trapped by the unsevered tissues.
Despite the severe injury, the 69-year-old Vietnam War veteran wasn’t about to give up. Realizing that he would likely bleed out if he didn’t act quickly, Schlafman made a life-or-death decision: he had to sever his hand to free himself and survive.
Without a moment's hesitation, Schlafman grabbed a nearby knife and began the agonizing task of cutting off his own hand. Once he managed to escape, he called the police, who were able to tie off the wound and stabilize him. Through quick thinking and sheer willpower, this 69-year-old North Dakotan saved his life through self-amputation.
5. Al Hill

In 2007, Al Hill, a 66-year-old man from Iowa Hill, California, was out in the woods cutting down trees when a tragic accident occurred. A tree fell and pinned him underneath, leaving him trapped for 11 grueling hours. Stranded in a remote area with no cell service, Al faced a dire situation. In a desperate bid to survive, he used a pocketknife to sever his own leg below the knee.
Once freed from his entrapment, Al called out for help, and fortunately, a passing neighbor heard his cries. The neighbor hiked out to a spot where they could call authorities, and soon Al was airlifted to a hospital. After undergoing surgery, Al survived the ordeal against all odds, a true testament to his resilience.
4. Zheng Yanliang

Zheng Yanliang is a farmer and factory worker from China who was pushed into making an unimaginable choice due to some incredibly harsh circumstances. His journey of endurance and survival began when he was diagnosed with arterial thrombosis in his leg. Despite the numerous visits to the hospital, which drained his finances, Zheng was informed that the cost of the necessary amputation was about $48,000—an amount he could never afford. Doctors told him he had just three months to live, and they sent him home to wait for the inevitable.
As time passed, Zheng’s leg deteriorated rapidly. Maggots infested the wound, but Zheng was determined to live for the sake of his family. In the early hours of April 14, 2012, he made a decision that would change his life. Armed with nothing but a fruit knife and a hacksaw, he bit down on a piece of wood and began the excruciating task of amputating his own leg. It took him 20 minutes to saw through the bone, and in the process, he lost three teeth from biting down so hard. But Zheng’s act of self-amputation saved his life, and he lived on to tell his extraordinary story.
3. Sampson Parker

In 2007, Sampson Parker, a farmer from South Carolina, found himself in a life-threatening situation while working alone in his field. His right arm became trapped in a mechanical picker, which then caught fire. Faced with the horrifying possibility of burning to death, Parker made a drastic decision. Using only his small, 8-centimeter (3 in) pocketknife, he began sawing through his own arm to escape the fiery trap. He managed to free himself, later remarking that he felt little pain during the ordeal.
A firefighter named Doug Spinks arrived at the scene to find Parker severely burned and losing blood rapidly. Spinks was able to save Parker's life. Later, Parker recalled the day’s terrifying events during interviews while sitting near the same piece of machinery that nearly ended his life. He reflected that it was the intense pain and the fire that kept him conscious, preventing him from passing out while he sawed through his own arm using just a pocketknife.
2. Doug Goodale

In 2002, Doug Goodale, a lobster fisherman from Maine, found himself in an unimaginable situation while out at sea. During a storm, his arm got caught in a winch, and he was thrown overboard, still trapped by the winch. With the threat of death looming and thoughts of his children filling his mind, Goodale made the unthinkable decision to sever his own arm.
After being thrown overboard, Goodale managed to pull himself back onto the deck of his boat, though he dislocated his shoulder in the process. His arm was still trapped in the winch. That’s when he grabbed a knife and began cutting through his own arm. By amputating below the elbow, he freed himself, guided the ship into harbor, and was able to alert the authorities. Despite the heavy bleeding, Goodale survived and returned home to his children.
1. Ramlan

This remarkable story of self-amputation began with a tragedy of almost unfathomable scale and ended with a heroic act of friendship that proves the strength of human spirit. Ramlan, an 18-year-old, was working alongside his friend Eman, 53, when a devastating earthquake hit their home city of Padang, Indonesia, on September 30, 2009. As the earth shook violently, concrete collapsed around them. Ramlan’s fellow construction workers managed to escape, but he found himself trapped beneath a heavy concrete girder, his leg pinned.
Panicked and desperate, Ramlan realized that his only chance for survival was to amputate his own leg. Once the tremors ceased, he grabbed a nearby hoe and tried to cut through his leg, but the tool was too dull to break through the bone. He then managed to call his friend Eman, who rushed to his aid, locating him in the rubble. Eman found a trowel, but that wasn’t effective either. Eman then discovered a hacksaw, and Ramlan, now weakened, attempted to saw through his leg to escape, but his strength was fading.
Seeing that his friend was too weak to continue, Eman took the saw from him and completed the task that Ramlan had started. Eman amputated the rest of his friend's leg, wrapped the wound, and carried him to a nearby hospital. There, another amputation was performed a little higher up the leg to ensure a clean break. Ramlan survived the ordeal and went on to share his incredible survival story.
