Conspiracy theories involving UFOs and extraterrestrials are now so widespread that they’ve become an undeniable part of popular culture. These theories have persisted for years, gaining momentum especially since the notorious Roswell event. Although they mostly remained in the realm of fringe beliefs, the advent of the Internet has propelled many of these ideas into mainstream attention.
Naturally, while some conspiracy theorists have attempted to group all their far-fetched ideas about our solar system under one umbrella, things don’t always align neatly. Many theorists struggle to reach consensus on exactly what the government is concealing and what the true motives of our purported alien rulers might be.
10. The Moon Landing Was Authentic, But the Footage Was Staged

The belief that the Moon landing was a hoax stands as one of the most enduring and widely known conspiracy theories regarding the U.S. government. While the specific arguments may vary, the core idea remains familiar to many. Essentially, it claims that there are numerous discrepancies in the footage that cast doubt on the landing’s authenticity. Critics have highlighted issues with lighting, atmospheric inconsistencies, and other strange anomalies that don’t seem to add up. According to these theorists, these flaws in the video evidence suggest that the Moon landing never took place, and that the entire event was staged on a film set.
A wilder theory than the Moon landing hoax exists, presenting an even more convoluted take on the situation. This theory agrees that the footage was definitely fabricated but insists that the actual Moon landing did take place. The proponents of this view argue that given the immense cost, the actual rocket launch, and the real astronauts who ventured into space, the mission was indeed carried out. However, they contend that the technology at the time was insufficient to film the event properly or that the government feared the footage would be subpar, so they recreated the event on a set for propaganda purposes. Some even speculate that the real reason for the cover-up was to conceal alien discoveries on the Moon from the public.
9. The Velikovsky Hypothesis

Immanuel Velikovsky, a self-proclaimed scientist without formal credentials, put forth a highly speculative and incoherent theory about the solar system. He authored the bestselling book *Worlds in Collision*, where he suggested that many of the bizarre events mentioned in the Bible actually occurred and were the result of other celestial bodies. According to Velikovsky, based on myths and ancient texts, Mars and Venus were responsible for a series of catastrophic events by coming dangerously close to Earth.
One of the key points of Velikovsky’s theory is the odd behavior of Venus, which he argued rotates in the opposite direction, making it an abnormal member of our solar system. He believed that the disasters described in the Bible mirrored similar events in other cultures from the same period, and he attributed all these calamities to the proximity of Mars and Venus, although he never clearly explained which planet caused which event. His theories were harshly rejected by the scientific community, who dismissed his unconventional ideas.
8. Climate Change in the Solar System

While most people accept that climate change is either a natural phenomenon, driven by human activity, or deny its existence altogether, those who believe in solar system climate change argue that it is happening across the entire solar system, and Earth has nothing to do with it. A key supporter of this theory points to scientific reports showing evidence of climate shifts on planets such as Mars and Jupiter, and even Pluto, which is farthest from the Sun. This theorist suggests that the only plausible explanation is a gradual warming of the entire solar system.
This theory suggests that climate change on Earth is not occurring, regardless of its supposed cause. Instead, it claims that the entire solar system is experiencing a warming trend. However, the theorist does not seem to have an explanation for the cause of this solar system-wide shift in climate or how it functions within the broader context of climate science.
7. The Lucifer Project

In the *2001: A Space Odyssey* series, mysterious extraterrestrial beings use strange technology to transform Jupiter into a second sun, called Lucifer. This artificial sun would be the right size and temperature to make all of its moons habitable, potentially creating new planets for colonization. This could either provide a new home for intelligent alien life near Earth, or offer humans a new place to live. While this concept seems like something straight out of science fiction, the idea is colossal in scale. Even if it were theoretically possible, the precision needed to make Jupiter a star without disrupting the orbits of other planets in the system would be incredibly difficult, not to mention the risk of blowing everything up and destroying the entire system.
Theorists claim that NASA has already attempted to implement the Lucifer Project and plans to keep trying until it succeeds. Space probes often use plutonium-238, a radioactive compound, as fuel due to its efficiency for long-term missions. Some believe that a probe was intentionally crashed into Jupiter to protect its moons from potential contamination, but also as a test to see if the radioactive payload could help convert Jupiter into a star, advancing the Lucifer Project.
6. The Comet Landing Conspiracy

Recently, the Philae lander successfully touched down on a comet through the efforts of the European Space Agency. While many hailed this as another triumph in space exploration, some theorists had a different perspective on the event. Soon, due to the unusual circumstances surrounding the mission, conspiracy theories began to emerge. The European Space Agency even reported hearing strange sounds emanating from the comet, which only fueled further speculation.
Theories suggest that the enormous amount of money spent on the mission and its sudden execution point to the possibility that the comet might be an alien artifact. Some theories go as far as to suggest that the object may not have wanted to be discovered. Others propose that the comet houses a transmission tower, and some photos allegedly show UFOs in the background, leading to the conclusion that the entire mission is part of a vast alien cover-up being hidden from the public by world governments.
5. The All-Seeing Eye of Saturn

In 2007, NASA released new images captured by the Cassini spacecraft, which had been sent to study Saturn in the 1990s. These images revealed a stunning hexagonal shape at Saturn’s north pole, sparking much speculation among scientists regarding its origin. NASA’s team has been puzzled by the appearance of such a precise geometric formation, particularly given Saturn's atmospheric conditions. The size of the hexagon is also remarkable—NASA notes that it could fit four Earths inside its boundaries. Although NASA has not yet offered an explanation, theorists at Natural News have proposed their own interpretations.
The Natural News writer points to the photograph on NASA’s website, asserting that the image clearly exists and that NASA is baffled by the phenomenon. Upon closer inspection, he claims that a “pyramid” and “two concentric circles” can be seen. He then suggests that the “all-seeing eye” depicted on the back of the U.S. dollar bill closely resembles the shape visible in the Saturn photo. While he insists that he’s only stating the existence of the photograph and the eye, without making specific claims about aliens, gods, or global conspiracies, he acknowledges that NASA could have fabricated the eye in the image, though he can’t fathom why they would do so.
4. President Obama Has Been to Mars

President Obama has faced numerous accusations over the years, from being a secret Muslim to not being truly American. Some theories even suggest he is a sleeper agent intended to destabilize the U.S. from within. Critics often point to his limited service record and lack of political experience before taking office. Yet, some conspiracy theorists argue that Obama's secrecy is not about these accusations, but about a far bigger secret—one he has never disclosed.
According to some theorists, back in the 1980s when Obama was in college, he participated in a joint program run by the CIA and DARPA, becoming what they call a 'chrononaut.' These theorists claim that Obama was teleported to Mars via a so-called 'jump room,' and took part in several perilous missions. While these people are labeled as theorists, two of them allegedly broke their silence to share that they were also chrononauts.
These theorists suggest that Obama's missions were intended to establish an alliance with the Martians to protect humanity from potential intergalactic dangers. He was reportedly told that his mission was simply to 'be seen and not eaten.' Naturally, if their claims were true, sharing such classified details would likely come with serious repercussions.
3. The Phobos Failure Was Caused by HAARP

A few years ago, Russia launched a mission to Mars with a probe called the Phobos-Grunt. Unfortunately, the mission was plagued with problems almost immediately. Before it could leave Earth's orbit to head to Mars, the probe started experiencing communication issues. Initially, it was meant to leave low Earth orbit and proceed to Mars, but instead, it ended up orbiting much higher than planned, and eventually just kept on orbiting.
Even when ground stations, including those in Russia, managed to re-establish contact, they received garbled and encrypted signals. Ultimately, the mission failed entirely, leading to speculation about the cause. While some attribute the failure to an alleged 'Martian curse' that is said to affect missions to Mars, others point the finger at the United States.
Conspiracy theorists argue that the HAARP program (High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program) was responsible for the failure of the Phobos-Grunt. While the U.S. government claims that HAARP's purpose is simply to study the ionosphere, these theorists believe it has been used to manipulate the weather, and by extension, it’s easy to assume it could have been used to sabotage the Phobos-Grunt as part of an ongoing Cold War strategy against Russia.
2. The Hubble Telescope Moon Argument

One less commonly discussed theory surrounding the Moon landing is that the government could easily provide proof it happened if they chose to. The argument goes that if the government hasn't supplied the requested evidence, that in itself is evidence that the landings never took place. The theory claims that with the Hubble Space Telescope, which can capture stunning images of distant galaxies, it would be simple to aim it at the Moon and photograph the landers left behind. If the government were to release such images, they could definitively prove the Moon landings. The fact that they haven't is considered by theorists as clear evidence of a cover-up.
Of course, the flaw in this reasoning is that the Hubble Space Telescope can't do what they suggest. According to astronomer Phil Plait (known for Bad Astronomy), the issue lies in resolution. The Hubble, and most large telescopes on Earth, are designed for capturing images of distant objects. This means that something as small as the lunar landers (or even the size of a football field) would simply appear as a tiny dot, indistinguishable from anything else. Despite this obvious fact, many theorists still hold on to their belief. Plait also pointed out that even if such images were taken, conspiracy theorists would still likely dismiss them as fake, simply because they would come from the government.
1. We Colonized Mars Decades Ago

Many believe that humanity's survival hinges on the colonization of Mars. For years, we’ve been sending probes to investigate the planet's terrain and the possibility of past or present life. The excitement continues to build around the idea of sending humans to Mars, with countless questions about the hurdles we’ll face. But there’s a growing faction who assert that humanity has already set foot on Mars and established colonies long before. For those who subscribe to this belief, new ‘evidence’ may have recently surfaced.
In 2014, a woman known only as Jackie revealed that she had worked for NASA and claimed to have witnessed evidence of colonies on Mars—or perhaps even intelligent Martians residing on the red planet. Her account describes her involvement in assisting with the Viking Lander’s landing on Mars, during which she observed two figures approaching the lander. As this occurred, the feeds were reportedly cut off, and she and her colleagues raced upstairs for a better view, only to find that their superiors had locked the doors and sealed any possible way to observe through cracks.
Jackie speculates whether the figures she saw were extraterrestrials or human colonists. However, her theory seems to favor the idea that they were fellow human settlers. While her story may seem far-fetched, especially considering her other controversial belief—that the 9/11 attacks were staged with holograms—it adds to the mystery surrounding Mars and its potential inhabitants.
