Many of us tune into major sporting events solely to catch the grandeur of the opening or closing ceremonies (excluding the FIFA World Cup, naturally). Occasionally, these spectacles take a turn for the bizarre.
10. The F1 Ballerina Incident

While Formula 1 races don’t typically feature opening ceremonies, they often include national anthems and, depending on the host country, traditional performances or cultural displays.
At the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, an unusual scene unfolded instead of the Russian anthem. A ballerina seated atop a grand piano, rolled onto the track, left both spectators and drivers bewildered.
As the notes of a Tchaikovsky piece filled the air, the ballerina began her performance atop the piano. Due to a worldwide sporting ban, Russia was prohibited from displaying its flag or playing its anthem, making this artistic display a unique substitute for tradition.
9. A Tragic Mishap

During the 1988 Seoul Olympics, as the Olympic cauldron was lit, the three athletes tasked with igniting it likely expected the doves inside to fly away. Moments earlier, hundreds of doves had been released as symbols of peace, but a few chose to rest inside the cauldron.
Unfortunately, at least 12 doves remained in place, perishing in the flames before a live audience of thousands and millions more watching on television.
This incident led to stricter precautions in subsequent events involving doves.
8. The Solo Treadmill Runner

The opening ceremony of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was, to say the least, a bit awkward. It began on a decent note, with Naomi Osaka lighting the cauldron and performances by Keith Urban, John Legend, and others singing “Imagine.”
With no live audience, athletes were asked to wave at media personnel, officials, and staff. Videos of athletes training at home were also shown. Then, in an odd turn of events, a Japanese boxer ran alone on a treadmill in the stadium for over 15 minutes, later joined by a few fellow athletes and dancers.
Meanwhile, outside the venue, protesters called for the cancellation of the Games, occasionally clashing with spectators who were barred entry by a police barricade.
7. A Performance Replacing Warmup

During the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final in Cardiff, no players were seen warming up just before the match between Juventus and Real Madrid. Instead, the Black Eyed Peas took center stage, performing on the pitch.
The performance caused a delay of several minutes, much to the frustration of the fans.
6. Kayfabe or Simply Bizarre?

While WWE isn’t considered a traditional sport due to its scripted outcomes, it’s marketed as sports entertainment and features some of the world’s most athletic performers. This makes some of the peculiar moments at WrestleMania worthy of mention.
For instance, WrestleMania IX in Las Vegas featured Bobby Heenan riding a camel backward, and another memorable moment saw Big Show donning a mawashi, the traditional sumo wrestler’s loincloth.
Then, there was the WrestleMania 36 opening ceremony, which showcased one of WWE’s strangest videos ever. Wrestlers dressed as pirates fought skeletons and a giant crab-like creature, straying far from the usual kayfabe they’re known for.
5. A Royal Sketch

Rugby is a major sport, and World Cup tournaments often feature elaborate ceremonies. However, some creative decisions leave both live and TV audiences scratching their heads.
At the 2015 Rugby World Cup opening ceremony, a video played featuring Prince Harry and Jonny Wilkinson dressed as gardeners. Harry later gave a standard speech to the 80,000 fans at Twickenham, but many were likely still puzzled by his gardener role in a skit about the William Webb Ellis legend.
Still, Prince Harry’s appearance paled in comparison to Queen Elizabeth and Daniel Craig’s iconic 2012 Olympic moment, watched by over a billion people, which included a breathtaking parachute stunt.
4. A Bold Gesture to the World

The FIFA World Cup is the pinnacle of global sporting events, and its opening ceremonies are known for their grandeur. When Brazil hosted in 2014, they pushed the boundaries of creativity. While Pitbull’s white pants and a malfunctioning giant globe grabbed attention, robotic dancers dressed as footballs added a surreal touch. Thankfully, other performers showcased Brazil’s beauty, adorned as Samambaia ferns and vibrant native flowers.
However, the 2018 ceremony in Russia took the cake for strangeness. Robbie Williams performed in a controversial leopard-print suit, ending his act by flipping off the world. This followed his altered lyrics in “Rock DJ,” where he sang, “I did this for free.”
3. A Nightmarish Display

The 2022 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony received mixed reactions, with some labeling it a “fever dream” and others noting how its visuals frightened children. The event’s surreal imagery left many viewers bewildered.
Dancers moved energetically until the lights suddenly turned red, signaling the next act—a towering, smoke-emitting mechanical bull with glowing red eyes. While some spectators found it thrilling, others described it as dystopian, even comparing it to a “ritual dedicated to Baal.”
The creators of the bull explained that it was a homage to the overworked and underpaid female chain-makers of the Industrial Revolution.
2. Flames and The Lion King

Super Bowl halftime shows aim to surpass previous performances, often resulting in bizarre moments. Examples include Bruce Springsteen’s crotch-first slide into a camera and the infamous “Left Shark” during Katy Perry’s 2015 act.
One of the strangest was the 1995 halftime show promoting Disneyland’s “Temple of the Forbidden Eye.” It featured odd Indiana Jones skits, a bewildered Tony Bennett, and a rendition of “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” alongside lip-syncing and flaming parachutes.
1. Diana Ross’s Memorable Mishap

When the USA secured the 1994 World Cup hosting rights, soccer nations worldwide collectively raised their eyebrows. At the time, the U.S. wasn’t regarded as a soccer powerhouse, and the country had to work hard to change that perception.
Unfortunately, they fell short.
The opening ceremony at Chicago’s Soldier Field featured appearances by Oprah, Bill Clinton, and other celebrities. However, Oprah stumbled off the stage after introducing Diana Ross. Ross performed “I’m Coming Out” and then attempted a penalty kick.
She missed wildly, but the goalpost dramatically split in two, as it was designed to do.
Broadcasters worldwide couldn’t hold back their laughter, with some labeling it a bad omen. This awkward moment is destined to be remembered for years to come.
