Christmas is widely recognized as 'the most wonderful time of the year,' and rightfully so. This festive season gives us the chance to be with family, friends, and loved ones while also offering a time for kindness, celebrating our spiritual beliefs, honoring cultural traditions, and reflecting on the truly meaningful things in life.
The holiday is also celebrated as a season of generosity, whether it involves giving gifts to loved ones, making donations to charitable causes, or supporting organizations that aid those in need.
Yet, in these stories, what should have been a joyful time of year instead became a period marked by heartbreaking loss, leaving families devastated, mourning, and forever changed in their view of the holiday season.
Here are ten Christmases that will, sadly, always be overshadowed by tragedy.
10. Children Forced to Open Christmas Gifts in Front of Their Deceased Mother

Za’Zell Preston, 26, from Anaheim, California, was studying at Cyprus College to become a domestic violence counselor. Her gentle, forgiving, and compassionate nature, unfortunately, led her into a marriage with William Wallace, where she endured years of abuse.
In 2008, Wallace admitted to assaulting Preston and threatening to kill her, serving a brief 18-day sentence. Afterward, a restraining order was imposed, but Wallace successfully persuaded Preston to reunite with him. Over the next three years, Wallace's threats escalated, and tragically, he carried them out during Christmas of 2011.
At the time, Wallace and Preston lived with their seven-week-old son and Preston’s two daughters, aged three and eight, from a previous relationship. On December 24, 2011, they attended a Christmas Eve gathering at a neighbor’s house. When they returned home, a heated argument escalated into violence.
Preston's oldest daughter later testified that Wallace shoved her mother into a glass table. Wallace then instructed the daughter to help remove shards of glass from her mother’s body. Afterward, Wallace tried to clean Preston’s wounds in the bathroom, but in the process, he dropped her, causing her head to strike the toilet. He moved her to a bedroom but never sought medical help. Around 1 am, Preston succumbed to her injuries.
On Christmas Day, Wallace placed Preston on the couch wearing sunglasses and filmed the children as they unwrapped Christmas presents in front of her deceased body. He then told the children, 'Mommy ruined Christmas; she got drunk and ruined Christmas.'
It wasn't until around 9:30 am on Christmas Day that Wallace finally called 911, claiming that his wife required medical help. When paramedics arrived, they found Preston unresponsive, and because there were no visible signs of injury or blood, they attempted CPR. She was later declared dead at the hospital.
Wallace was arrested that same day but insisted that Preston had bitten and struck him, claiming she fell onto the table while he was defending himself. His lawyer later suggested that Preston's death was the result of her drunkenly stumbling and falling several times. It wasn’t until April 7, 2021, that Wallace, now 39, was convicted of second-degree murder. On June 4, 2021, he was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, with credit for the nine years he had already served.
9. Christmas Day Lunch Leads to Fatal Food Poisoning Incident

On December 25, 2012, 46-year-old Della Callagher fell seriously ill after consuming a four-course turkey meal at a Christmas Day lunch at The Railway Hotel in Hornchurch, east London. Callagher was one of seven people from a group of 16 who became sick after eating the turkey, but while the others recovered, Callagher's condition worsened.
On December 26, 2012—Boxing Day—Callagher’s husband, 51-year-old John Callagher, took her to Queen’s Hospital in Romford, where she was examined in an ambulance. John reported that Callagher was given an injection but that no blood test was performed. She was advised to go home and rest.
Sadly, later that day, Callagher went into cardiac arrest at home. John called for an ambulance, but by that time, Callagher 'barely had a pulse.' Tragically, she passed away at the hospital on December 27, 2012, leaving behind her husband and their 14-year-old daughter.
Callagher’s family filed civil claims for negligence against Mitchells & Butlers, the chain that owns The Railway Hotel. However, with 33 people falling ill, the authorities launched a major investigation. It was determined that Callagher's death was caused by Clostridium perfringens bacteria, a common source of food poisoning. The turkey had been prepared on Christmas Eve but wasn’t cooled correctly after cooking, nor was it reheated properly before being served.
It was also discovered that the pub’s chef, 37-year-old Mehmet Kaya, and the pub manager, 40-year-old Anne-Marie McSweeney, had falsified records in an attempt to cover up the fact that the turkey meat had been dangerously undercooked.
Both Kaya and McSweeney were found guilty of perverting the course of justice. On January 23, 2015, Kaya was sentenced to one year in prison, while McSweeney was sentenced to 18 months. The pub chain Mitchells & Butlers was also fined $1.9 million (£1.5 million) after being found guilty of selling unsafe food.
8. Father Drowned While Testing Family’s Surprise Christmas Gift

Chand and his seven-year-old daughter were initially facing each other in the canoe, but they later adjusted their positions for comfort. Unfortunately, in the process, the girl's leg became trapped beneath Chand's, and when she tried to free herself, the canoe capsized.
When the canoe flipped over, Chand clung to the two-seater, while his daughter, who was fortunately wearing a life jacket, swam and called for help. The daughter was eventually rescued, but tragically, Chand went under the water and never resurfaced. He wasn't wearing a life jacket. His body was recovered on Boxing Day, found 22 feet (7 meters) underwater.
Chand not only left behind his wife of 14 years, Sheron Shoma Dutt, and their three children, but his younger brother, Visal, shared that the yellow canoe would be a symbol of yet another devastating loss. On that Christmas morning, the family had visited the grave of their other brother, 33-year-old Avinash, who had tragically died in a car crash in June 2021.
7. Mother and Daughter Found Dead When Family Arrived for Christmas Dinner

Margaret Shively had planned to visit her mother, 57-year-old Elaine Fizer, in Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas morning in 2021 to help with the holiday meal. However, after repeatedly calling her mother without receiving any response, Shively and her family decided to go to Fizer’s home to check on her.
Upon arriving at Fizer's house, the family found that she didn’t answer the door. They decided to look through a window, where they made a horrifying discovery—what appeared to be a body lying on the floor.
The family contacted the police, and Shively’s husband forced his way inside. Inside, he discovered a tragic scene: Fizer and her 13-year-old adopted daughter, Daunya Fields, who was non-verbal and confined to a wheelchair, had both been shot. Authorities later revealed that the shooting had occurred at 5:45 am that morning, and Fizer's husband, 62-year-old Dwayne McDonald, was named a person of interest after fleeing the scene.
On December 28, 2021, police received a tip that McDonald was hiding in an apartment with two associates. Officers obtained a search warrant, but upon entering the building, McDonald, armed, confronted them. A shot was fired, leading to a deadly exchange where McDonald was killed at the scene.
6. Freak Accident on Christmas Eve Claims the Life of a Little Girl

Christmas Eve of 2008 was a joyful day for the Hughes family, filled with visiting friends, shopping, and even purchasing a new television to replace the old one in their Coedpoeth, Wrexham home’s living room.
After returning home, Robert Hughes set up the new television. He then decided to move the old, large, and bulky widescreen TV downstairs into the children’s play area.
Hughes’s four-year-old daughter, Emily, often took the Nintendo DS game console she shared with her siblings to a quiet spot to play alone. Unfortunately, unknown to her father, Emily was lying on her stomach at the foot of the stairs. As Hughes carried the old TV set down, he tripped over Emily and dropped the heavy TV onto her head, trapping her beneath it.
Hughes quickly lifted the TV off Emily and carried her into the kitchen, where his wife, Louise Sandra Hughes, called for an ambulance. The couple attempted to resuscitate Emily until paramedics arrived, but she never regained consciousness.
Emily was rushed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital and later transferred to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool due to a lack of oxygen and blood supply to her brain. Sadly, the accident fractured Emily’s skull, and the brain damage caused her pulse and blood pressure to stop. She was declared dead at 10:10 pm on Christmas Day.
The mystery surrounding a cold case from Christmas Eve remains unsolved to this day.

When 16-year-old Sophia Ulloa found herself pregnant, her mother, Tina Mendoza, was understandably concerned about her ability to finish high school. Yet Mendoza later acknowledged, “Boy, did that girl prove me wrong,” as Ulloa managed to juggle her responsibilities, keep her grades up, hold a job, and graduate—all while caring for her child.
In 2000, 20-year-old Sophia Ulloa and her four-year-old daughter Jasmine moved back into Mendoza’s home in Stockton, California. What was meant to be a joyful Christmas season quickly became a nightmare that would forever change their lives.
On Christmas Eve of 2000, Sophia went out for some last-minute holiday shopping, hoping to find the perfect gift—a new scooter—for her daughter, Jasmine. While Sophia was out, Tina went to bed. But just after midnight, Mendoza was startled awake by loud screams coming from outside.
Rushing outside, Mendoza found her daughter Sophia standing by her car, clutching her side and gasping, “Go get him; I’ve been stabbed.” Instead of running to her daughter’s aid, Mendoza ran back into the house to dial 911.
When police arrived at the scene, they found Ulloa lying beside her car, which was filled with Christmas gifts meant for her daughter. Authorities began looking for suspects, but the only lead they had was the sighting of a light-colored Ford Thunderbird or Mercury Cougar leaving the area around the time of the crime. Tragically, Ulloa, the sole witness, was pronounced dead shortly after 1 am, following her rushed transport to the hospital.
At the time, Ulloa’s close friend, Lisa Orosco, claimed that the night before the incident, someone had warned Ulloa, saying, “Someone will kill you.” However, Ed Rodriguez, a lead detective with the Stockton Police Department, later revealed that he had never received any information about this phone call that Orosco had alleged.
In 2001, Ed Rodriguez, along with the California State Governor’s Office, announced a $50,000 reward for any tips leading to an arrest and conviction in Ulloa’s case. Unfortunately, despite multiple interviews with numerous individuals, no one has been named as a suspect. Now an adult with her own child, Ulloa’s daughter, Jasmine, still faces the painful reminder of her mother’s death each Christmas Eve, as the case remains unsolved.
4. Forgotten Nut Allergy Triggers Fatal Reaction During Christmas Dinner

Twelve-year-old Cason Hallwood, from Winsford, Cheshire, had asthma and a nut allergy. Due to his asthma, he often spent Christmas in the hospital. However, in 2020, this was the one year that Hallwood didn’t have to stay in the hospital during the holiday. Naturally, he woke up Christmas morning excited to open his gifts, looking forward to a joyous day ahead.
Hallwood spent Christmas Day at home with his mother, Louise, and his three brothers—18-year-old twins Cowen and Corley, and 13-year-old Caiden—before heading to his grandparents’ house for Christmas dinner. There, he enthusiastically finished his meal, declaring that he had 'licked his plate clean.' Afterward, Hallwood went to the Wharton Recreation Park to hang out with some friends.
About twenty minutes later, Hallwood called his mother, asking her to send one of his brothers with his inhaler to the park. One of Hallwood’s twin brothers delivered the inhaler and reported that Hallwood appeared to be fine. However, when Louise received a second call from her son, she could immediately tell that the inhaler had not worked as expected.
At that point, Louise hurried to the park with an EpiPen that had been stored at Hallwood’s grandparents’ home, but unfortunately, the EpiPen had expired. When she reached the park, she found Hallwood’s eyes swollen, indicating a severe allergic reaction, but the injection provided no relief.
Louise dialed for an ambulance, and Hallwood was rushed to Leighton Hospital in Crewe. Tragically, he passed away shortly after, succumbing to anaphylactic shock caused by peanut consumption, with bilateral pneumonia (collapsed lungs) also contributing to his death.
In a devastating twist, it was later revealed that Hallwood’s grandfather, Albert, had prepared a beef joint and a gammon joint for their Christmas dinner the night before but had forgotten about Hallwood’s severe nut allergy. He had used a glaze for the gammon that contained nuts.
3. Christmas Evening Smoke Break Followed by Fatal Heart Attack

Gareth Blenkins, a 40-year-old from Armley, Leeds, was known for his strength and protective nature, always ready to help anyone in need. If someone was feeling down, he would often offer comfort by asking, “Do you need a Blenkins cuddle?” Tragically, this devoted father passed away on Christmas Day in 2022 after suffering a sudden heart attack.
Blenkins spent the holiday with his family in Cottingley. As the evening drew to a close, he stepped outside for a cigarette. When he returned, everything seemed normal as he entered, laughing and joking. But in a shocking moment, he suddenly clutched his chest, collapsed to the floor, and began having a seizure.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Blenkins could not survive, as his brain had been deprived of oxygen for too long. He left behind a 15-year-old son, the one person he truly 'lived for.'
2. Teenager Found Dead After Going to Wrap Christmas Presents

Lauren Cayford, a 19-year-old from Brynmawr, Wales, had been living with severe epilepsy since she was 14. Despite her condition, she devoted her time to helping others, volunteering with St. John Ambulance, her church, a youth club, and a local food bank.
On Christmas Eve of 2018, the Cayford family enjoyed a meal of Chinese food, Cayford’s favorite. Afterward, she went upstairs to finish wrapping Christmas presents. About 20 minutes later, her father, Robert, went to check on her, only to find his daughter face down on her bed, unresponsive and not breathing.
Robert immediately began performing CPR while Cayford’s mother, Del, called for an ambulance. The paramedics arrived in time to resuscitate her, but upon reaching Nevill Hall Hospital, it was discovered that Cayford had sustained irreversible brain damage. She passed away on December 26, 2018, and was laid to rest in mint green fleece pajamas and fluffy socks—one of the gifts she had wrapped for Christmas.
Although Cayford’s life was tragically cut short, she managed to fulfill her dream of helping others, saving three lives through organ donation after her death.
1. Postpartum Depression Leads to Christmas Suicide

Cody Hettich, a 28-year-old from Spencer Township, Michigan, described his wife, Sasha Hettich, as 'ridiculously smart,' 'a fantastic mom,' and 'a great wife.' Sasha had a passion for cooking, canning vegetables, and baking, and she enjoyed spending time with friends. Above all, she made sure to devote extra time and love to her children.
After the birth of their daughter, Sasha struggled with postpartum depression, but with treatment, she recovered. Unfortunately, she started experiencing difficulties once again just months before the birth of their son in July 2015. Despite receiving counseling and support group therapy, Sasha’s mental health did not improve.
On Christmas Day of 2015, Sasha told Cody that she was taking their three-year-old daughter and five-month-old son to Starbucks, while he stayed behind to clean the house. However, Sasha didn’t return as expected, and Cody reported her missing later that evening.
Tragically, on December 26, 2015, at around 10:30 am, Sasha’s body was discovered in a remote area, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Their daughter was found curled up against her mother’s body, and their infant son was found shivering in his car seat inside the vehicle. Both children were treated for hypothermia but were safe and healthy by December 29, 2015, when they returned home.
Although Cody remarked, 'This isn’t something that a healthy Sasha would have done,' he never anticipated her tragic death or realized just how serious her mental health had become in the months leading up to her passing.
