Why risk a last-minute mishap when it's entirely preventable? Review this list of frequently forgotten pre-Thanksgiving tasks to ensure a smooth, stress-free holiday celebration.
1. Assess Your Kitchen Utensils and Equipment
Preparing for Thanksgiving dinner often involves using tools that aren't part of your everyday kitchen routine, such as basters, mashers, kitchen twine, and more. Ensure all these items are ready and in good condition before the holiday arrives. Also, verify that your meat thermometer is functioning properly—it's a critical tool for the big day!
2. Organize Your Fridge and Freezer
Clear out expired condiments, old leftovers, and prepare a few "chaos cooking" meals in the days before Thanksgiving to free up essential fridge space for your turkey and side dishes. Additionally, make room in your freezer for ice, ice cream (perfect for pie toppings), and other treats.
3. Adjust Your Oven Racks
Maximize your oven space by positioning the racks at optimal heights to accommodate your turkey and all the side dishes. Be sure to leave enough room for the turkey to cook evenly and efficiently.
4. Ensure Adequate Seating Arrangements
When hosting a large gathering, you might find yourself short on dining chairs. To accommodate everyone, consider bringing in folding chairs, repurposing office chairs or stools, or asking guests to contribute a few extra seats. This way, everyone can comfortably join the table.
5. Don’t Forget to Buy Ice
Ice is a must-have for Thanksgiving. It’s perfect for chilling drinks, but it can also serve as a backup cooling solution if your fridge is overflowing with holiday dishes. Use an ice bucket or cooler to keep beverages cold, or even to preserve side dishes that won’t fit in the refrigerator.
6. Plan Your Table Decorations
While your attention may be on the menu and food preparation, don’t overlook the importance of table decor. A stunning floral centerpiece is always a great choice, but you can also create your own using seasonal items like gourds, fruits, and greenery, or simply rely on the warm glow of candlelight to set the mood.
7. Organize Your Serving Dishes and Utensils
With numerous casseroles and side dishes requiring serving spoons, ensure you have enough large utensils to handle the task. A teaspoon won’t cut it for dishing out mashed potatoes! Also, inspect your favorite trays and bowls to confirm they’re clean, intact, and ready for use.
Label each serving dish with tape or sticky notes to indicate which food it will hold. This makes it easier for others to assist in transferring dishes from the kitchen to the table seamlessly.
8. Clear Out Your Dishwasher and Sink
Ensure your sink and dishwasher are empty before your guests arrive. This allows dirty dishes to be moved directly from the table to the dishwasher, preventing a pile-up of dishes in the kitchen.
9. Take Out the Trash
Similar to the above, an empty trash can ensures you can dispose of the turkey carcass, vegetable scraps, and other party waste without the hassle of emptying it mid-turkey carving.
10. Prepare Your Bathroom
Give your bathroom a quick clean and ensure it’s well-stocked with essentials like toilet paper, soap, and extra hand towels. Also, place a plunger in an easily accessible spot, just in case it’s needed.
