To ensure your guests stay until the very end, keeping them entertained is key!
Michael Blann/ThinkstockIt's a common scenario I've witnessed at many otherwise wonderful wedding receptions. The hosts invest heavily in music, food, and decorations, only to see guests leave shortly after dinner, long before the celebration concludes. This might not appear disastrous at first, but it becomes evident when only a few people are left to cheer the newlyweds as they depart.
Wedding receptions often have significant gaps between major events, leading guests who aren't fond of dancing, tire quickly, or don't know many attendees to lose interest and head home early.
For brides who love to party, it's entirely possible to keep your reception lively until the final dance. With some thoughtful planning, innovative ideas, and a bit of extra budget, you can create an unforgettable event. Read on for expert tips on reception entertainment that will make your celebration the talk of the town for years.
10: Stick to a Schedule
Guests who might otherwise leave early will stay longer if they know tasty late-night treats are coming. Share printed schedules with your guests, outlining the timeline of reception activities. Whether distributed at the entrance or placed on tables, these guides will help everyone know what to anticipate and ensure they don’t miss out on the highlights.
Here’s an example of what my ideal wedding schedule might look like:
- 7:00 - first dance 7:15 - dinner is served
- 8:00 - champagne toast
- 8:15 - break-dancing competition begins
- 9:00 - giant cake-sized brownie is served
- 10:30 - send-off featuring professional fireworks show
- 10:35 - hop a cab to local bar with other guests
Feel free to tailor the schedule to suit your reception’s unique requirements—except for the giant brownie. That’s a must-have.
9: Keep 'em Fed, Keep 'em Happy
The success of 24-hour diners lies in their ability to cater to late-night cravings. Apply this strategy by serving food in multiple stages. Begin the reception with hors d'oeuvres or dive straight into the main course. Once your guests have danced up an appetite, surprise them with late-night treats. Some brides opt for sweet options like mini milkshakes, cookies with milk, or a build-your-own sundae station. Others might prefer savory choices such as sliders, fries, or a nacho bar. These fun, casual snacks will re-energize your guests just in time for a lively "Grease" sing-and-dance session.
If you’ve opted for a beer or wine bar, consider enhancing the experience by hiring a professional to host a beer or wine tasting during your reception. This will elevate your guests’ enjoyment and make your offerings more memorable.
8: Take Advantage of Amenities

In such situations, some guests might choose to skip the reception and head home for comfort. Prevent this by keeping them entertained during the downtime. For weddings in large parks, consider offering short horse-drawn carriage rides or rickshaw tours. At museums or botanical gardens, arrange for guided tours of exhibits or gardens. Recently, I attended a reception at the San Diego Zoo, one of the most unique venues imaginable. Guests received free zoo passes to explore during the two-hour gap between the ceremony and reception. While we may have looked out of place in formal attire, we certainly turned heads—even the giant pandas seemed to appreciate our style.
7: Make It a Cultural Affair
With a heritage that includes English, Irish, German, and Lebanese roots, I can confidently say our world is a vibrant melting pot. People from all cultures and religions are marrying, blending their unique backgrounds into harmonious families.
If you and your partner hold a deep connection to your heritage, make it a focal point of your celebration. Incorporate cuisine, performances, and entertainment that reflect your cultural roots. Imagine professional belly dancers at a Middle Eastern-themed event or salsa dancers energizing a Latin-inspired party with their vibrant moves and attire. Step groups can bring rhythm and excitement to a celebration of African-American heritage. Enhance the ambiance by displaying family portraits or heirlooms that showcase your cultural legacy.
Since not everyone attends the rehearsal dinner, repurpose your slideshow for the reception. Set up a computer or TV in a corner and play the slideshow at a specific time or on a loop throughout the event.
6: Host a Talent Show
Many people dream of being in the spotlight, even if just for a few minutes. This explains the enduring popularity of karaoke. If you have a guest with star potential attending your wedding, invite them to perform. Maybe your cousin channels Elvis perfectly, or your best friend’s husband recently competed on a reality dance show. Keep the performances fun and lighthearted—skip the cheesy choreography. Who knows? A talent scout might just stumble upon your reception and discover the next big star.
No matter what happens, make sure the microphone is turned off after the performance. Nobody wants to hear your second cousin attempt to burp the alphabet. Well, maybe I’d find it amusing, but there’s a time and place for everything.
5: Go Pro
Most wedding guests stick to simple moves like the bob, sway, and shake on the dance floor. Anything more complex feels too intimidating. Boost your guests’ confidence by hiring a professional dance instructor to teach them the basics of a specific dance style.
Whether it’s a country line dance or a graceful waltz, you can tailor the dance style to match your wedding’s theme. Once guests master the basics, let them hit the dance floor to show off their new skills. Tiffany Gore, an Atlanta-based wedding coordinator, once arranged for a professional to teach guests the iconic "Thriller" choreography by Michael Jackson. Unsurprisingly, this nostalgic activity was a hit with guests of all ages—far more exciting than the Electric Slide.
While traditional rice tosses are charming, some couples are taking their send-offs to the next level. Consider ending the night with a professional fireworks display or swapping the classic limo ride for a glamorous helicopter departure worthy of a celebrity.
4: Pooch Procession
Why not include your furry friend in some family wedding photos?
Hemera/ThinkstockCalling all dog enthusiasts! Many couples share a unique bond with their four-legged companions. If your pup is part of the family, dress them up and have a trusted friend bring them to the reception for a special appearance. Your dog can mingle with guests, drawing admiration in their adorable tuxedo or bridal outfit. They can even join in for photos with dog-loving attendees and take their first official family portrait with you and your groom.
3: Play Around
Try finding someone who doesn’t enjoy a thrilling game of Pac-Man. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Since we’ve established that everyone loves classic games, why not bring out the inner child in your guests with some well-placed arcade, board, or card games? If you have outdoor space, set up simple lawn games like bean bag toss, bocce ball, or marbles for the kids. These nostalgic activities are perfect for filling gaps between courses and other reception events. Just avoid messy options like finger painting—unless you want tiny handprints all over your wedding dress.
Keep children entertained during your reception by hiring a professional magician, balloon artist, clown, or face-painter. This gives parents a chance to enjoy adult conversations while their kids are happily occupied nearby.
2: Go Photo Loco
Your extended family and friends might never get to see those wedding photos.
George Doyle/ThinkstockWomen often fuss when a camera is pointed at them, but their best smiles usually appear just in time for the flash. Typically, wedding photographers capture candid moments throughout the reception. Sadly, guests rarely get to see the final results.
Photography-themed activities and favors are currently a major trend in weddings. Some couples arrange for photos to be taken as guests arrive, using portable printers to provide instant keepsakes before the night ends. Not only will guests treasure these mementos, but you’ll also have a visual record of everyone who celebrated your special day.
Another popular trend is renting photo booths for receptions. Supply fun props like feather boas, hats, or sunglasses, and watch guests compete for the best photo strip.
1: Appease the Sports Lovers

Photo courtesy Ryan JohnsonSoutherners are deeply passionate about a few things: sweet tea, fried food, and football. In fact, my August wedding date was specifically chosen to avoid clashing with football season. (I’ve heard too many stories of guests skipping weddings for games.) If your wedding falls during the sacred late summer or fall months, it’s wise to make a few sports-friendly adjustments to the reception. For instance, set up a TV or projector to show the big game of the night, visible to dedicated fans. Sound isn’t even necessary—most fans are content just watching the score ticker at the bottom of the screen. This not only spares your guests from complaints but also keeps the energy high with cheers throughout the night.
While I’ve heard rumors of people being obsessed with sports other than football, it’s hard to imagine. If your wedding coincides with a major event like the World Series, March Madness, or the World Cup, you can boost team spirit by handing out memorabilia like foam fingers or pennants. For the truly enthusiastic, encourage guests to bring team-themed outfits to change into for the reception. You can even hire team mascots to energize the crowd for an hour or two. For die-hard fans, a wedding isn’t complete without a college student in a giant foam animal costume!
