Most of us have likely looked up at aircraft soaring high in the sky. While common wisdom suggests the white streaks left behind are harmless contrails, some believe they are chemtrails, sparking ongoing debates on the subject.
It’s easy to understand why this topic continues to generate interest, especially when isolated incidents appear to suggest that something has altered specific ecosystems. Conspiracy theories surrounding this have been amplified by actual admissions from government figures about experiments conducted in the past. Below are ten particular claims of chemtrails and geoengineering that seem questionable when considering the public's well-being.
10. ‘The Mystery Flu’ Strikes the United States

In early 2016, a so-called ‘mystery flu’ appeared to spread across various regions in the United States. Dr. Len Horowitz argued that ‘elements of the US government,’ along with ‘Big Pharma,’ were intentionally weakening American citizens' immune systems to make a large portion of the population ill.
Horowitz stated that he had observed and investigated the sudden appearance of a ‘mystery flu’ that couldn't be traced to any logical origin using standard methods or typical incubation periods. The illness didn’t fade in a few days as expected, but instead lingered for months, with symptoms including fatigue and sinus congestion. It was suspected that this disease was being spread through chemtrails.
Horowitz pointed to a specific patent held by the Armed Forces Research Institute of Pathology for a ‘pathogenic mycoplasma,’ which he believed to be the cause of the quiet epidemic subtly sweeping across the United States.
9. ‘They’ve Been Doing This Since the 1940s’

In February 2014, Kristen Meghan, a US Air Force veteran and whistleblower, publicly confirmed the existence of chemtrails, claiming she had seen the proof firsthand. As an environmental engineer, she knew what chemicals were being used at US military facilities and their intended purposes—or so she thought.
Meghan further claimed that the quantity of unknown chemicals being used by her department (and the Air Force as a whole) increased, with no clear information on the manufacturers or departments responsible. When she investigated and brought these concerns to her superiors, she was silenced. After voicing her frustrations on social media, she faced threats of imprisonment and having her daughter taken from her care.
Meghan further claimed that these activities had been ongoing since the 1940s, with the ultimate objective being to control the ecosystems of individual nations. Her explanation for the lack of concrete proof was telling: ‘If you try to take a picture in a restricted hangar, you will have an M-16 pointed at your back. People are afraid to speak out.’
8. Lawsuit Against Geoengineering in Canada

A significant development for geoengineering advocates occurred in March 2016, when a lawsuit was filed in Canada regarding the ‘spraying of toxic substances and particles into the atmosphere’—substances harmful to both humans and the environment. The plaintiffs argued that those responsible for such actions were fully aware of the harm they were causing.
The case focused on geoengineering at large but specifically highlighted numerous instances of aircraft releasing ‘aerial discharge [that] would linger and often stretch across the horizon and sky.’ It was further claimed that this discharge, upon dispersing, was so hazy that it obscured sunlight. As a result of the chemicals released into the air, citizens reported various consequences, including ‘emotional and psychological trauma,’ injuries (sometimes severe), and even death.
7. Chilling Revelations of Past Tests

In their book, *The American West at Risk: Science, Myths, and Politics of Land Abuse and Recovery*, authors and researchers Howard G. Wilshire, Jane E. Nielson, and Richard W. Hazlett made the alarming and unsettling claim that every community across the United States has been subjected to ‘some kind’ of military chemical experiments, conducted through the atmosphere—effectively, via chemtrails.
Their research revealed that more than 200 ‘open-air chemical and biological tests’ were carried out over two decades, between 1949 and 1969. These experiments were not confined to sparsely populated areas, but rather took place in densely populated regions. In nearly every instance, the public (including city leaders and high-ranking officials) was completely unaware of these experiments.
The statistics and figures mentioned above were made public in 1977. It's chilling to consider the kind of covert experiments that may have occurred since then, and what form they could have taken.
6. Arizona Residents Force Public Debate on Chemtrails

In June 2014, a public forum in Western Arizona saw a passionate debate over chemtrails. The meeting, organized by Republican state senator Kelli Ward, was not meant to endorse chemtrail theories. However, she acknowledged it would be unwise for her to ‘ignore what many people in [her] district are concerned about.’ She described her constituents as ‘relentless’ in pursuing their theories, which she remarked was ‘not a bad thing to be.’
For years, many residents of Arizona have claimed that the state is being subjected to chemical bombardment, allegedly by ‘federal planes.’ One resident at a public meeting shared that citizens had been aware of these activities for a long time, adding, ‘Really, we are being sprayed like we’re bugs.’ The majority of those at the meeting dismissed the idea that chemtrails are merely contrails. Their theories varied, ranging from military experiments to a broad effort to keep the population passive and under control.
5. The ‘Checkerboard Skies’ of Arkansas

In 2007, Bill Nichols, after conducting extensive research in Arkansas, presented his findings to KSLA News 12, aiming to expose what he believed was chemtrail activity in the region. Nichols had spent considerable time observing the skies above Arkansas and conducting thorough tests on the ground, soil, and local water sources.
He explained that on some mornings, the skies resembled ‘a giant checkerboard’ as chemtrails crisscrossed over each other. Contrary to the standard explanation of contrails, Nichols argued that while contrails dissipate quickly, the trails he observed lingered in the sky for hours. Moreover, the substances allegedly released would descend to the ground, with some mornings witnessing a ‘visible haze’ descending from above.
One of Nichols’s tests revealed barium levels in both the ground and atmosphere three times higher than the threshold deemed toxic by the Environmental Protection Agency.
4. Lawsuit Filed Over Chemical Testing in St. Louis During the 1950s

In 1994, the US government admitted to conducting top-secret chemical tests on St. Louis residents throughout the 1950s. What made the situation more troubling was the revelation that many of these experiments had been carried out in areas of the city with predominantly black populations.
The US government explained that these experiments were a result of the Cold War, claiming that St. Louis was chosen because it resembled certain Russian cities that might be targets in future conflicts. However, many remained unconvinced by this sudden admission, including St. Louis professor Lisa Martino-Taylor. Her extensive investigation into the case led to a lawsuit against the government, which Martino-Taylor argued had caused far greater and more harmful health consequences for the citizens exposed to the tests than originally acknowledged.
3. The NASA Chemtrail Conspiracies

NASA has long been the subject of conspiracy theories, and it seems to make sense that they would find themselves at the center of accusations involving chemtrails and the release of toxins into our atmosphere.
In the summer of 2017, NASA revealed plans to launch sounding rockets into the upper atmosphere, which would create artificial red and green clouds visible along Virginia and the East Coast of the United States. NASA claimed this experiment would assist scientists in studying auroras and the ionosphere.
Naturally, many within conspiracy circles loudly declared that this was merely another instance of chemicals being dispersed into the Earth’s atmosphere, intended to control humanity. Perhaps it is the tendency of conspiracy theorists to automatically target NASA and similar organizations that allows real instances of chemtrails (such as those mentioned earlier) to go unquestioned and dismissed for so long.
2. Snowden Ties ‘Controlled Agriculture’ to Black Budget Programs

Edward Snowden, one of the most divisive figures of the past decade, reportedly exposed numerous secrets to the public, one of which was the US government's use of chemtrails to manipulate agriculture. Moreover, these projects were often funded by black budget programs, which, although officially nonexistent, accounted for large amounts of public expenditure.
According to Snowden and other sources, including the Agriculture Defence Coalition, agriculture is under threat from 'experimental weather and atmospheric testing programs'—essentially, chemicals and toxins dispersed from the atmosphere and rainfall, also known as chemtrails. Given the ongoing debates surrounding GMOs, many believe that organic farming is being targeted. If successful, this would push the population toward GMO products, benefiting those in power.
1. Forced Vaccination via Chemtrails in Australia

In 2013, it was claimed that the Australian government had plans to forcibly vaccinate its citizens by releasing aerosolized GMO vaccines. Live bacteria were supposedly to be dispersed over areas in Queensland, Victoria, and South and West Australia during a year-long trial. This theory may have arisen due to a proposal by the US company PaxVax, which suggested testing a genetically modified, orally administered cholera vaccine in these regions. PaxVax asserted that they had safeguards to prevent the vaccine from spreading to unintended areas and from affecting local wildlife and ecosystems.
As one might expect, these alleged plans sparked outrage. A case from California in 2009 was cited, where a resident who had been exposed to 'heavy spraying' became severely ill. Medical tests reportedly indicated that she had unknowingly received a 'DNA vaccination' via 'nasal inhalation.'
