The internet was buzzing with excitement over tornadoes last night. Sharks. Tornadoes. Sharks and tornadoes together. When Damon Lindelof and Wil Wheaton are both tweeting about your made-for-TV spectacle, you know you’ve created a cult classic. What most people don’t realize is that Sharknado is just one example of an entire genre of gloriously awful SyFy movies. If Sharknado had you hooked, here are 10 more wild flicks you’ll want to check out.
1. Mansquito, AKA Mosquitoman
A convicted murderer becomes part of a medical experiment, only to be injected with a virus that transforms him into, you guessed it, part man, part mosquito. As you can imagine, this doesn’t bode well for society. But it certainly makes for some entertaining viewing. Bonus: With Corin Nemec in the lead, you can finally find out if Parker Lewis ever loses after all.
2. Sharktopus
In a strange case of living taxidermy, akin to Victor Frankenstein's experiments, the U.S. Navy creates a hybrid beast by fusing a shark with an octopus for military purposes. Naturally, they soon realize they can’t control the creature (have you ever tried reigning in a sharktopus? So many tentacles. So many teeth.), and as expected, it turns on them. The film stars Eric Roberts and former beauty queen Shandi Finnessey.
3. Piranhaconda
You probably read the description of Sharktopus and thought, 'Wait, was there a sequel?' The answer is YES. But it barely has anything to do with sharks or octopuses. Instead, the movie centers on two enraged piranhaconda parents out for revenge after a scientist steals their egg. Many are eaten in the process. I’ll leave it to you to figure out whether stars Michael Madsen and Rachel Hunter survive the piranhacondas’ wrath. Also, Shandi Finnessey returns.
4. Fire Serpent
Ever wondered what Nicholas Brendon did after Buffy came to a close? Well, he starred in Fire Serpent, where a solar flare unleashes a fiery alien creature to destroy the Earth. Sounds a bit like a plot from a rejected Star Trek episode, right? That’s because it was written by none other than William Shatner.
5. Aztec Rex
Sharknado may not be Ian Ziering’s first foray into SyFy madness—oh no. He also starred in this 2008 gem. Let the film speak for itself:
6. Chupacabra vs. The Alamo
Erik Estrada is called upon to defend Texas from a ruthless gang of Chupacabras, who are using an underground tunnel to cross from Mexico into the United States.
7. Ice Spiders
Patrick Muldoon, whom you might recall as Jeff, the guy who caused the unforgettable Zack and Kelly breakup on Saved by the Bell, plays a former Olympic skier now working at a ski resort in Utah. On the other side of the mountain, a group of scientists is experimenting with a new breed of spiders. As you can imagine, things quickly spiral out of control. Without giving too much away, let’s just say that one of the ice spiders meets its demise when it’s impaled on the antlers of a mounted deer head.
8. Mega Python vs. Gatoroid
Animal rights activist Debbie Gibson releases a bunch of exotic pythons into the Everglades, while Park Ranger Tiffany is busy feeding steroids to the alligators. You can already guess where this is going, right? It’s going to be absolutely wild.
9. Anonymous Rex
Not only did dinosaurs survive extinction, but they still walk among us—disguised as humans using holograms. Sam Trammell from True Blood stars as a velociraptor, while Daniel Baldwin plays a triceratops. And if that’s not enough, Faye Dunaway and Isaac Hayes also make appearances.
10. Dinoshark
A follow-up to the 2004 film Dinocroc, Dinoshark wreaks havoc on tourists in Puerto Vallarta. Could we be looking at the dawn of a new mashup? Dinosharknado, anyone? SyFy, give me a call.
