Social media platforms like TikTok make it seem like all it takes is a few rolls of peel-and-stick wallpaper, and suddenly your bedroom, bathroom, or dining area looks entirely different. But does the process live up to the hype? We consulted a few interior design experts who shared their insights on the proper way to install peel-and-stick wallpaper. The reality is, it’s a little more involved than TikTok lets on. Thankfully, these professionals offered valuable tips to ensure your wallpapering project goes smoothly. Keep reading for their step-by-step instructions!
Patience Is Key
Patience plays a big role in most home improvement projects, and this one is no different. Francesca Grace, an interior designer and HGTV personality, installed peel-and-stick wallpaper in her guest room and breakfast nook. She admits that patience isn't her strong suit, so if you relate to Grace, be prepared for the process. If you lack DIY skills or get easily frustrated, you might want to hire a professional instead.
Accurate Measurement is Essential
Before you rush to click 'add to cart' on that wallpaper, take a moment to measure your walls accurately. Molly Borman Heymont, founder of the decor brand Housewife Essentials and peel-and-stick wallpaper expert, advises: "Count your panels and ensure you have enough for your space. A frustrating oversight could leave your project unfinished after a long day’s work."
Avoid Textured Walls
Grace recommends only applying peel-and-stick wallpaper to flat, smooth surfaces. While it is possible to use it on textured walls, the process is much trickier and the results may not meet your expectations.
Start by preparing the walls for wallpapering by cleaning and prepping them. It’s essential to get rid of any dirt or dust to ensure the wallpaper adheres properly.
Grace advises cleaning the wall thoroughly before starting, then allowing it to dry completely. “I’d go over the wall with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt, as this will help the wallpaper stick,” she explains.
Make sure to apply the wallpaper evenly across the surface for a smooth finish.
Begin from the top or bottom, but maintain consistency throughout. “The key is to line up the panels from the same starting point every time. Personally, I find it easiest to start from the top, but others may prefer starting near the floor,” says Heymont.
Take care to avoid air bubbles as you apply the wallpaper for a seamless look.
Dealing with air bubbles can be frustrating, but it’s part of the process. “Depending on how big the air bubble is, you might feel comfortable puncturing it to release the air,” says Heymont. If you’re hesitant about that method, she suggests gently peeling back the wallpaper to let the bubble escape.
Choose a wallpaper color that complements the shade of your wall for a harmonious look.
TikToker Joanna Hawley, who used Chasing Paper's Cowboy Toile in her bathroom, shares that the process was surprisingly easier than she expected. “I didn’t realize how simple it would be to reposition the wallpaper until I got it perfectly aligned,” she recalls. However, Hawley learned a key lesson: “Make sure the wall color matches the wallpaper's background. It’s disappointing when a dark wallpaper installed on a white wall shows gaps at the edges,” she says.
Gather all the necessary tools before starting your wallpaper installation for a smoother experience.
Having the right tools is essential for the job. “I highly recommend having a measuring tape, level, smoothing tool, a utility knife with a fresh blade, and a step ladder,” advises Hawley.
Having an extra pair of hands can make all the difference.
For those who aren’t DIY experts, it’s a good idea to recruit a friend for help. Tara Kowalke, who applied peel-and-stick wallpaper to two accent walls and in her kitchen, says it wasn’t a flawless process, but it was certainly manageable with some assistance. “It’s much easier with at least one other person,” she explains.
Make sure to plan carefully when tackling challenging spaces for a smoother installation.
Kowalke also suggests aligning wallpaper pieces both vertically and horizontally if you can't use full strips from ceiling to floor, especially in tricky areas like kitchens where counters and appliances might complicate the process. Even so, she found the experience rewarding. “It was much easier than I thought and really enhances the room with minimal cost and no damage to the walls,” she concludes.
