Superheroes aren't just characters from comic books and films; in reality, countless heroes around the globe are performing extraordinary feats. From remarkable strength to unimaginable acts of bravery and endurance, these real-life individuals show us the true power of the human spirit.
10. Blind Man Rescues Blind Woman from a Burning House

Imagine rescuing someone from a blazing building, guiding them carefully through the thick smoke and searing heat. Now, picture yourself being blind as well, just as Jim Sherman was in this remarkable story. Blind from birth, Jim heard his elderly 85-year-old neighbor’s desperate cries for help as her house caught fire. In a display of courage and heroism, he navigated his way to her house from his trailer by feeling his way along the fence, ultimately saving her from the flames.
After reaching the woman’s home, Jim Sherman somehow made his way inside and found his terrified neighbor, Annie Smith, who was also blind. With great determination, he pulled Smith from the burning building and carried her to safety.
9. Skydiving Instructors Make the Ultimate Sacrifice to Save Their Students

Few people survive a fall from thousands of feet in the air, but incredibly, two women did, thanks to the heroic actions of two men. The first man, Robert Cook, sacrificed his life to save a person he had only just met. During a skydive with his student, Kimberley Dear, the plane’s engine failed. In a selfless act, Cook told Dear to sit on his lap as he secured their harnesses together. When the plane crashed, Cook's body took the brunt of the impact, saving Kimberley from what should have been a fatal fall.
Another skydiving instructor, Dave Hartsock, also took the brunt of the impact to save his student. On Shirley Dygert’s first tandem dive, although the plane didn’t malfunction, her parachute did. In a terrifying freefall, Hartsock positioned himself below Dygert, absorbing the impact as they hit the ground. Although Hartsock suffered a spinal injury that left him paralyzed, both he and Dygert survived the fall.
8. Man Rescues Four Soldiers from the Battlefield

Though he was an ordinary man, Joe Rollino led an extraordinary life that spanned 104 years, performing feats of strength that defied belief. Weighing just 68 kilograms (150 lb), he could lift 288 kilograms (635 lb) with his fingers and 1,450 kilograms (3,200 lb) with his back during his prime, earning numerous titles and accolades in the world of strongman competitions.
However, it wasn't his incredible feats of strength or his title of 'Strongest Man in the World' at Coney Island that made Joe Rollino a hero in the eyes of many. During World War II, Rollino served in the Pacific, earning a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, and three Purple Hearts for his bravery and battle wounds, which left him hospitalized for a total of 24 months. His most heroic act was carrying his comrades to safety under fire, pulling two at a time from the battlefield, only to return and save more of his wounded brothers.
7. Father Battles an Alligator to Save His Son

Fatherly love can drive extraordinary acts of courage, as two fathers from different corners of the world have shown. In Florida, Joseph Welch rushed to his six-year-old son’s aid when an alligator latched onto the boy’s arm. Without hesitation, Welch repeatedly struck the alligator in a desperate attempt to free his son. Eventually, a bystander helped by kicking the alligator in the stomach until it released the boy.
In Mutoko, Zimbabwe, another father saved his son from a crocodile attack in a river. Tafadzwa Kacher, the father, jabbed reeds into the crocodile’s eyes and mouth until his son was freed. With the boy out of danger, the crocodile then turned its attention to Tafadzwa, who had to gouge out the animal’s eyes to escape its grip. Although the boy lost his leg in the attack, he survived to tell the story of his father's remarkable bravery.
6. Two Real-Life Wonder Women Lift Cars to Save Lives

Men aren't the only ones capable of showing superhuman strength in a crisis. A mother and daughter proved that women can also rise to the occasion, especially when a loved one is in danger. In Virginia, a 22-year-old woman saved her father when the BMW he was working on slipped off the jack and crushed him. With no time to wait for help, she lifted the car off his chest and performed CPR to keep him alive.
In Georgia, another car jack failed, trapping a young man under a 1,350-kilogram (3,000 lb) Chevy Impala. Without hesitation, his mother, Angela Cavallo, lifted the car and held it in place for five minutes until neighbors could rescue her son.
5. Woman Prevents Runaway School Bus from Causing Harm

Not all superhuman feats are about physical strength or bravery; some require quick thinking and decisive action in an emergency. In New Mexico, a school bus carrying children became a runaway vehicle when the driver suffered a seizure. A girl waiting for the bus noticed the driver in distress and immediately called out to her mother for help. Without missing a beat, Rhonda Carlsen sprang into action to prevent disaster.
She sprinted alongside the runaway bus, using gestures to signal to one of the children on board to open the door. As soon as the door was unlocked, Carlsen leapt onto the bus, grabbed the steering wheel, and brought the vehicle to a halt. Her quick thinking and rapid action ensured the safety of the children on board and any bystanders who might have been in harm’s way.
4. Teen Rescues Driver from Dangling Truck

In the dead of night, a semi-trailer truck plummeted over the edge of a cliff. The truck’s cab came to an unsettling halt, dangling dangerously above a gorge with the driver trapped inside. A young man rushed to the scene, smashing the window and pulling the driver to safety with his own hands. This dramatic rescue took place on October 5, 2008, at Waioeka Gorge in New Zealand, not in a movie, but in real life.
18-year-old Peter Hanne, who was at home when he heard the crash, didn't hesitate to put his own safety aside. Climbing onto the precarious truck, he squeezed between the cab and the trailer and shattered the rear window. With the truck swaying and creaking beneath them, he carefully assisted the injured driver to safety. For his extraordinary bravery, Hanne was awarded the New Zealand Bravery Medal in 2011.
3. Man Lifts Helicopter to Save Co-Worker

The set of the TV show *Magnum P.I.* turned into a real-life disaster when a helicopter crashed into a drainage ditch in 1988. During what seemed to be a smooth landing, the helicopter unexpectedly lost control and fell to the ground, all caught on camera. One of the show's pilots, Steve Kux, was trapped under the helicopter in shallow water. In an extraordinary act of strength, Warren 'Tiny' Everal rushed over and lifted the helicopter off Kux. The Hughes 500D helicopter, which weighs at least 703 kilograms (1,550 lb) when empty, was no small feat to move.
Tiny's swift reaction and incredible strength prevented Kux from being crushed under the heavy helicopter. Although Kux suffered a permanent injury to his left arm, he survived the accident, thanks to Tiny's heroic intervention and the quick actions of a local Hawaiian hero.
2. Champion Swimmer Saves 20 People From Sinking Bus

Aquaman has nothing on Shavarsh Karapetyan, who became a real-life hero when he saved 20 people from drowning in an underwater bus accident in 1976. The champion Armenian finswimmer was completing a training run with his brother when he witnessed a bus full of 92 passengers veer off the road and plunge into a reservoir, 24 meters (80 feet) from the shore. Karapetyan wasted no time diving into the water, breaking the back window, and pulling numerous passengers out of the sinking bus, which had already gone 10 meters (33 feet) below the surface in the freezing water.
Each person Karapetyan saved took around 30 seconds, allowing him to rescue one after another before he himself lost consciousness due to the icy, murky waters. Remarkably, 20 of the passengers he saved survived the incident. But his heroism didn't end there. Eight years later, he rushed into a burning building, saving several people while enduring severe burns. For his heroic underwater rescue, Karapetyan was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour by the USSR, yet he humbly insisted that he wasn’t a hero and had merely done what he had to.
1. Bullet-Riddled Soldier Returns to the Battlefield

War is full of heroes, many of whom risk their lives to save their fellow soldiers. In the movie *Forrest Gump*, we saw the fictional character perform incredible feats to rescue his comrades even after being shot. In reality, even more extraordinary stories exist, such as the one of Medal of Honor recipient Robert Ingram.
In 1966, during an intense enemy siege, Robert Ingram demonstrated unimaginable courage. Despite being shot three times—once in the head, which left him partially blind and deaf in one ear, once in his hand, and once in his left knee—he continued to fight on. Ingram pressed forward, taking out North Vietnamese soldiers who were attacking his unit, all while running into the line of fire to rescue his comrades. His bravery stands as a testament to the many wartime heroes who go above and beyond to protect their nations with extraordinary acts of valor.
