While observing mysterious lights in the sky can be intriguing, witnessing these unidentified objects up close is an entirely different experience. Even more astonishing is encountering these crafts with humanoid figures aboard or directly interacting with beings believed to be from another world.
Numerous documented cases of such encounters exist, far more than most people realize. These range from eerie confrontations with beast-like entities that disappear without a trace to terrifying abductions by shadowy humanoid figures that evoke sheer dread. Below are ten of the most compelling accounts of these otherworldly experiences.
10. The Imjarvi Encounter

On the afternoon of January 7, 1970, seasoned skiers Aarno Heinonen and Esko Viljo were skiing near Imjarvi, Finland. They paused at a familiar glade, a spot they often used for rest, when an unusual buzzing noise caught their attention. As they peered into the dimming sky, they noticed a peculiar light rapidly approaching them. The buzzing grew increasingly louder as the light drew nearer.
As the object closed to within about 3 meters (10 feet) of the pair, it released a mysterious “red-gray mist” that enveloped both the craft and its immediate vicinity. Suddenly, a blindingly bright beam of light erupted from beneath the craft, startling the two men.
After recovering from the temporary blindness caused by the intense light, Heinonen felt an inexplicable force pulling him backward, nearly causing him to fall. Once he steadied himself, both men observed a humanoid figure standing within the illuminated area. The creature held a peculiar black box that emitted a faint yellow glow from within. Moments later, the being—described as having the stature of a child but the proportions of an adult—aimed the box at Heinonen, releasing a cloud of red-gray mist and a shower of sparks. As the mist thickened, the light intensified until both the craft and the humanoid vanished. Heinonen discovered his right leg had gone numb, requiring his friend’s assistance to return home. Later, he reported passing black urine.
Many researchers consider the incident to be credible, though Heinonen’s subsequent claims of interactions with “blond alien women” were met with skepticism, ultimately tarnishing his credibility.
9. The Kinnula Sightings

In 1971, Finland experienced another wave of humanoid sightings, this time in Kinnula. On the evening of February 2, at around 8:00 PM, two women driving toward Oulu noticed a mysterious light trailing them from above. The light eventually overtook their vehicle, prompting the driver to stop. As the car came to a halt, the light disappeared, revealing a 90-centimeter-tall (3-foot) humanoid figure clad in a brown-green suit and a snug helmet. After briefly observing the women, the entity vanished into the nearby woods. The women chose not to investigate and instead continued their journey.
Just three days later, in the same area, two lumberjacks encountered a similar being. Petter Aliranta and Esko Sneck were preparing to leave work around 3:00 PM as heavy snowfall began. As they packed up, Aliranta spotted a silver disc hovering silently above a clearing in the trees.
The disc soon landed, and a roughly meter-tall humanoid figure emerged. Dressed in a green one-piece suit and a helmet resembling a scuba diver’s mask, the being approached the men. Sneck aimed his chainsaw at the creature, causing it to retreat toward its craft. The men pursued it, with Aliranta even grabbing the being’s heel, which sent a sharp pain through his body. Moments later, the silver disc ascended with the humanoid aboard and disappeared into the sky.
8. The Luumaki Incident

A third notable humanoid encounter in Finland took place five years before the previous entries, during the summer of 1965 in the small town of Luumaki. On a quiet afternoon, the Kuningas family—parents Matti and Maria, along with their children Tapani and Teuvo—were picking blueberries in a dense forest. With no one else around, they decided to spread out to gather as much fruit as possible before heading home.
As the family worked, Matti noticed an odd “bubbling” noise coming from above. After a moment of searching, he spotted a humanoid figure standing on a rocky slope ahead of him. The figure, about 100 centimeters (3’3″) tall, had a muscular build and orange skin. It stared intently at Matti before beginning to approach him. Despite his urge to run, Matti found himself frozen in place, unable to move.
When the creature was just a few yards away, it suddenly vanished. Matti turned around, scanning the area, but the being was gone. Later, his youngest son, Teuvo, mentioned that he had also seen the creature approaching Matti from across the field and witnessed it disappear into thin air.
7. The Salzburg Kidnapping

As reported in the December 1957 issue of British Columbia’s Prince George Citizen, an American soldier stationed in Salzburg, Austria, during the summer of 1951 claimed to have been abducted by aliens. This incident occurred long before such phenomena became widely known or part of popular culture.
The unnamed soldier, who worked as a driver, had just completed his shift for the day. Heading home shortly after 11:00 PM, he chose to take a shortcut through an overgrown, deserted area. As he walked, a dark humanoid figure suddenly appeared and approached him. The entity aimed an invisible device at the soldier, instantly paralyzing him. It then attached a peculiar black patch to his chest and used the device to manipulate his movements, seemingly pulling him toward a waiting craft as though guided by an unseen force.
The soldier recounted being taken to a transparent chamber inside the ship, which then ascended into space. He described the creature as approximately 152 centimeters (5 feet) tall, with pale skin and no hair. The most striking feature was its eyes, which the soldier compared to “those of a fly,” describing them as “eyes within eyes.” He claimed the ship landed on a lush, paradise-like planet, possibly Mars, before returning him to the exact location of his abduction.
According to the newspaper report, the investigator who documented the soldier’s account made multiple attempts to expose inconsistencies or falsehoods in his story. However, all efforts to discredit his testimony were unsuccessful.
6. The Filiberto Cardenas Incident

Filiberto Cardenas not only claimed to have been abducted by aliens in 1979 but also provided several eerily precise predictions of future events during hypnotic regression sessions conducted shortly after his encounter.
On the evening of January 3, Filiberto and his friend Fernando were driving near Miami, Florida, searching for a pig to barbecue. Without warning, their car lost power and stopped. As they stepped out to inspect the engine, they heard a faint humming noise above them. Strange lights began to illuminate the car’s exterior, and both men found themselves unable to move, completely paralyzed.
Suddenly, Filiberto was lifted into the air, drawn toward a bright light coming from a hovering craft. Moments later, he vanished. Fernando regained movement just in time to see the craft disappear into the sky. Two hours later, Filiberto reappeared on a busy road approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) from where the car had stopped. Miami police found him and, after contacting his family and Fernando—who had reported him missing—released him. This case is notable for being the first time a police report officially linked a disappearance to a UFO sighting.
Six months later, Filiberto underwent hypnotic regression. His account closely mirrored those of other alleged abduction victims. He described being strapped to a strange seat in a large room, held in place by a “suction device” on his back. He recalled undergoing experiments, including the sensation of small needles piercing his skull. The aliens attempted to communicate with him, cycling through languages like German and English before settling on Spanish, which Filiberto understood.
During the session, Filiberto revealed that he received telepathic messages while observing events on screens around him. He made several predictions, including a warning about a “city that will be destroyed [ . . . ] the capital of Mexico.” Six years later, in 1985, a devastating earthquake struck Mexico City, leveling parts of the city. He also predicted that “nearly all major population centers in California will fall into the sea.” In March 1983, Newsweek reported on coastal erosion causing properties to collapse into the ocean. Filiberto is also said to have foreseen the presidency of Ronald Reagan and the AIDS epidemic, among other events.
5. The Abduction Between Columbus and Mansfield

As the title suggests, specific details like the date and precise location of this incident remain unclear. This uncertainty may stem from the surge of UFO and humanoid sightings in 1973, especially during the latter half of the year. The witness, driving along Interstate 71 in Ohio in late September, noticed an unusual light trailing his vehicle. He believes he lost consciousness shortly after, as he suddenly found himself in a different location, still driving at high speed. After regaining his composure, he continued his journey. It wasn’t until he realized an hour of his time was unaccounted for that he decided to undergo hypnotic regression.
During his regression sessions, he recalled that after spotting the strange light, he inexplicably turned off the highway onto a deserted dirt road, as if under external control. Three entities surrounded his car, and a massive UFO descended nearby. The next thing he remembered was lying on a table, surrounded by the beings, who conducted various examinations and experiments on him. One of them placed a device near his head, causing a blinding flash. His final memory was waking up in his car, speeding down the highway once more.
4. The Boianai Encounter in Papua New Guinea

During the summer of 1959 in Papua New Guinea, missionary Father William Gill and numerous others observed strange lights in the sky. On two consecutive evenings, starting June 26, Gill and 37 other witnesses saw the UFOs up close. Remarkably, four humanoid figures aboard the crafts acknowledged the onlookers by waving. The credibility of the case is bolstered by the presence of professionals like doctors and teachers among the witnesses, as well as Gill’s reputable standing.
While sightings had occurred for months, this was the first time the crafts came close enough for witnesses to see their occupants. The beings responded to the crowd’s friendly gestures by waving back. When Gill used Morse code with a flashlight, the humanoids replied using lights on their craft.
While many witnesses and investigators concluded that the occupants were extraterrestrial, largely due to the advanced nature of the craft, Gill himself believed they were human. He also speculated that the craft might be a secret military project.
3. The Corroborative Account of Edith Boatright

Edith Boatright’s sighting, though intriguing and significant for corroboration, followed the widely publicized Piedmont High School basketball team encounter, which UFO investigators initially considered the primary case. On the chilly evening of February 21, 1973, after a disappointing playoff loss, the team’s coach, two staff members, and three players observed a brilliantly lit craft while driving home to Piedmont, Missouri, on Highway 60. They stopped to watch the object hover over a field for several minutes.
At the same time as their sighting, Edith Boatright, lying in bed, noticed a bright, flashing light outside her bedroom window. Her farmhouse was approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) from where the basketball team had stopped. Looking out, she saw a massive craft hovering over a nearby field. Its red, green, and white lights illuminated the area, including her window. Most remarkably, Edith insisted she could see figures moving inside the craft. She observed it for several minutes before it disappeared at incredible speed. It is highly likely that the craft Edith saw was the same one witnessed by the Piedmont High School group.
2. The 1996 Fife Encounter

On the evening of September 23, 1996, in Fife, Scotland, two women and a child experienced an extraordinary event after a quick trip to the store for coffee. Mary Morrison (a pseudonym), her friend Jane, and Mary’s son Peter left home just after 8:00 PM. While driving, they noticed a bright light that appeared to “split into two.” Moments later, a massive triangular craft with red lights on its underside flew overhead before vanishing. Shocked and confused, they continued to the store.
On their way back, they encountered the craft again. This time, it hovered directly above their car for several seconds. After arriving home, Mary reported the sighting. At the request of a UFO investigator, Mary, Jane, Peter, and Mary’s daughter Susan returned to the area to investigate further. As they neared the spot where they had seen the craft, they noticed a lit-up area near a field. They parked and hid behind a wall to observe. They saw “several slender figures” moving around a large object on the ground, each carrying what appeared to be a cube or box.
They revisited the scene a fourth time, bringing binoculars. As they watched the entities, which “were clearly not human,” a cocoon-shaped capsule sped toward them. While the details remain unclear, hypnotic regression later suggested an abduction occurred before the four were returned to their car, which is their next clear memory after the capsule’s approach. The incident remains unsolved.
1. The Emilcin Incident

While opinions on the incident remain divided, Jan Wolski’s 1978 encounter is now commemorated with a stone monument at the site where he allegedly met humanoid alien beings. Many in the UFO community consider this event the first documented alien abduction case in Poland.
On the morning of May 10, 1978, 71-year-old Jan Wolski was traveling through the forest near Emilcin, Poland, in his horse-drawn cart. Around 8:00 AM, he noticed two unusual humanoid figures ahead. As he approached, the figures “hopped” onto his cart, positioning themselves behind him. Unsure of what to do, Wolski continued driving.
The figures were dressed in black and stood approximately 152 centimeters (5 feet) tall. Wolski noted their faces and hands had a light green hue. He later recalled that they communicated in “high-pitched voices” using a language he couldn’t understand.
When Wolski reached a clearing, he saw a large, silver-white, oblong craft hovering in the air. He compared its shape to a bus and observed its seamless, glowing exterior under the morning sun. The beings led him into the craft via a lift. Inside, one of them placed two gray discs over his body, rotating him so the discs scanned him entirely. These devices may have been used for scanning or X-ray purposes. After the procedure, the beings gestured for him to leave. Wolski bid them farewell with a bow, which they reciprocated.
Although some dismiss the account as fabricated, Wolski gained no financial benefit or lasting fame from the encounter. To this day, the Emilcin incident remains a topic of debate.
