Autumn, a season eagerly anticipated by those escaping the heat of summer, brings cooler air and the stunning transformation of foliage, creating the ideal backdrop for outdoor festivals and gatherings with loved ones.
Beyond celebrating the crisp weather and scenic beauty, autumn is also a time to honor bountiful harvests and diverse cultural holidays. While Halloween and Thanksgiving are widely recognized, this season also includes celebrations like Yom Kippur, Eid al-Adha, Dia de los Muertos, and Diwali.
Here are 10 beloved autumn activities and events that unexpectedly turned tragic for those involved.
10. Visiting a Pumpkin Patch

In 2018, JK’s Pumpkin Patch in Lincoln, Nebraska, introduced a new feature—a massive bounce pad shaped like a jack-o-lantern. Tragically, a sudden gust of wind transformed this intended source of joy into a fatal hazard for a young child.
On October 3, 2018, two-year-old Caleb Acuna, along with his five-year-old sister Arra and their parents, attended a private event at the pumpkin patch. While the family was enjoying the bounce pad, a powerful wind gust struck, launching Arra 30 feet (9 meters) into the air. Caleb became ensnared as the inflatable folded and was carried over 100 feet (30 meters) away.
Arra sustained a broken arm, but Caleb suffered severe head injuries. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but was declared dead on October 4, 2018, and removed from life support the following day.
Investigations revealed that despite a wind advisory being in effect, JK’s Pumpkin Patch had inadequately secured the bounce pad with only a few stakes. Caleb’s father subsequently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the pumpkin patch and the event sponsor.
9. Corn Maze

The Incredible Corn Maze in Hauser, Idaho, offered a unique twist on the traditional corn maze experience, immersing visitors in a zombie-apocalypse-themed adventure. Participants rode through the maze on a specially modified school bus known as the Zombie Slayer Paintball Bus.
Jeremy McSpadden Jr, an 18-year-old actor, played the role of a “zombie,” tasked with jumping out of the corn stalks to scare visitors and “attack” the bus. Guests could retaliate by shooting paintballs at the zombies. Tragically, on October 10, 2014, McSpadden’s role-playing ended in a fatal accident.
While performing his role, McSpadden stumbled and fell as he emerged from the corn maze to confront the bus. He was struck and killed instantly by the rear tires. Unaware of the tragedy, passengers on the bus believed the incident was part of the act. It was only when the other actors began preparing for the next group that they discovered the horrifying truth.
The state of Idaho fined The Incredible Corn Maze $14,000 for the incident. The penalty was later reduced to $6,000 after the attraction agreed to shut down permanently.
8. Harvest Festival

For over four decades, the Deerfield Township Harvest Festival in Deerfield, New Jersey, was a beloved annual tradition. Featuring carnival rides, live music, food stalls, and local vendors, the event attracted families from near and far.
Tragedy struck on October 12, 2019, when 10-year-old Hailey McMullen was thrown from the “Super Sizzler” ride during the festival. Despite being airlifted to a nearby hospital, she was pronounced dead within an hour.
Authorities launched an investigation into the incident, and McMullen’s parents filed a lawsuit against both the ride’s manufacturer and operators. In the aftermath, the Deerfield Recreation Committee decided to cancel the festival in subsequent years.
7. Hayride

On October 30, 2021, seven-year-old Donovan Brashear from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, was participating in the Quail Meadows Homes Association’s annual Halloween festivities. One of the highlights was a hayride, but what began as a night of joy quickly turned into a heartbreaking tragedy.
Shortly before 8:00 pm that night, the young boy fell from the trailer he was riding. Despite his efforts to cling on, he was ultimately run over by the trailer. Rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, he passed away later that evening.
6. Haunted House

On September 16, 2017, 21-year-old Cheung Chiu-kit visited Ocean Park theme park in Hong Kong during its annual Halloween celebration. The park featured a haunted house attraction called “Buried Alive,” where participants were placed in a coffin-like slide, simulating the experience of being buried alive and struggling to escape. Tragically, for Chiu-kit, the attraction’s theme became a grim reality.
After completing his coffin ride, Chiu-kit mistakenly entered what he believed was an exit but was actually the rear of another slide area. Staff members attempted to redirect him, but when he ignored their efforts, they assumed he was part of the crew and allowed him to proceed.
While standing in the rear area behind the slides, Chiu-kit was struck by a falling coffin, rendering him unconscious. The impact caused severe back injuries, trapping him beneath the coffin and leading to his suffocation.
5. Raking Leaves

On November 30, 2016, 74-year-old Carl Humphrey was clearing leaves in his front yard when he was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead shortly after.
Using evidence from the scene, local authorities identified the driver as 21-year-old Kenise Joseph, who lived just a few blocks away. Joseph initially claimed she believed she had hit a mailbox. Upon realizing she might have struck a person, she returned to the scene but fled again after learning police were searching for a suspect, fearing arrest.
Joseph was eventually apprehended and pleaded guilty to fleeing the scene of an accident. She was sentenced to 15 months of home confinement instead of jail time.
4. Trunk-or-Treat

Eleven-year-old Noah Chambers was taking part in a trunk-or-treat event on November 1, 2019, hosted by Bethel United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, North Carolina. Tragically, while crossing the road between parking lots, he was struck by an SUV.
Chambers sustained severe head injuries, kidney damage, and a fractured pelvis. He was rushed to a nearby children’s hospital and placed on life support but was later declared brain dead. He passed away on November 3, 2019.
The SUV driver stayed at the scene and fully cooperated with law enforcement. No charges were brought against the driver following the incident.
3. Oktoberfest

On September 27, 2013, Ben M., a 23-year-old Australian, was enjoying Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. While celebrating in the Hofbrau beer tent, a 30-year-old American woman named Tesia D. elbowed one of his friends in the face, sparking a physical altercation between the two.
During the altercation, Tesia bit Ben’s lower lip and held on tightly. As Ben struggled to free himself, she twisted her head, ripping off a 1.2-inch (3-centimeter) portion of his lip. Despite medical efforts to reattach the lip, the surgery proved unsuccessful.
Tesia received a suspended sentence of one year and nine months in prison. Additionally, she was ordered to pay Ben $15,000 (€11,000) as compensation for his injuries.
2. Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios

Paul Rebalde, a 20-year-old employee at Universal Studios in Los Angeles, California, volunteered to work on a tram tour during the park’s Halloween Horror Nights event on October 31, 1986. The event, held annually, includes haunted houses, scare zones, and live performances to celebrate Halloween.
Rebalde’s role involved hiding among mannequins dressed as corpses on a stationary tram and jumping out to frighten passengers on passing trams. Tragically, as he leaped out, he became trapped between the third and fourth sections of the tram. He was run over and dragged approximately 100 feet (30 meters) before being pronounced dead at the scene.
1. Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a cherished occasion for gathering with loved ones, sharing a meal, and reflecting on gratitude. However, for one Pennsylvania man, the holiday turned tragic when his life was abruptly cut short.
On November 25, 2021, 25-year-old Edilberto Miguel Palaez Moctezuma was celebrating Thanksgiving with his family in Norristown, Pennsylvania, when a stray bullet entered through a window and struck him in the torso. Despite immediate efforts, Moctezuma was unresponsive when police arrived and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigations revealed that 19-year-old Kevon Clarke was responsible for the shooting. Clarke and his girlfriend had been asked to leave a Thanksgiving gathering, and later, it was noticed that some alcohol was missing. When the girlfriend’s cousin went to retrieve the alcohol, Clarke emerged with a gun and fired shots into the air. One bullet tragically entered Moctezuma’s home.
Clarke attempted to flee but was apprehended on December 13, 2021. He faced charges including first-degree murder, third-degree murder, and several firearm-related offenses.
