We all adore awe-inspiring survival stories, but there’s something uniquely touching about babies who manage to survive life-threatening situations. They’re pure, vulnerable, and completely defenseless, without any basic survival instincts. Yet, these 10 babies defied the odds and emerged from situations that many of us couldn’t survive.
10. Colbie Arrendale

Colbie's mother, Jessica Arrendale, was a victim of domestic violence. Tragically, like so many other instances of domestic abuse, it turned fatal. However, Jessica made a selfless sacrifice to save her baby’s life, even though she lost her own in the process.
That evening, Jessica went out with her boyfriend, Antoine Davis, a former Marine who had served in Iraq. During their night out, Antoine became intoxicated and violent. Jessica tried to defend herself with a baseball bat, but was quickly overpowered by Antoine, who then used the bat against her. He pursued her up the stairs in their three-story home, where they lived with their six-month-old daughter, Colbie. Jessica managed to lock herself and her baby in the bathroom. Antoine retrieved an assault rifle with a suppressor, broke down the bathroom door, and shot Jessica, killing her. In a desperate move, Jessica twisted her body, dropped Colbie into the toilet, and shielded her with her own body, concealing the baby from Antoine. Antoine, presumably searching for the baby, went to the nursery and then shot himself in the head.
The infant girl remained in the toilet, hidden beneath her mother's body, for 13 hours until police arrived. She was treated for hypothermia and showed signs of psychological trauma believed to be linked to witnessing the attack on her mother. Colbie’s family established a fund for her, raising nearly $40,000. Jessica was honored as a hero by her community.
9. Baby No. 59

This newborn captured global attention when he was rescued from a sewer pipe in China shortly after birth. His young mother had concealed her pregnancy from family and friends. She gave birth to the baby boy over a squat toilet in a public restroom in her apartment building, where he slipped down the drain. After cleaning up the mess, the young woman contacted the police, though she did not reveal herself as the mother.
The two-hour rescue operation was captured on film and watched by viewers across the globe. Authorities removed a portion of the pipe just below the toilet and rushed the infant, still partially trapped, to the hospital. Doctors used pliers to carefully open the pipe, which had a diameter of only 8 centimeters (3 inches). The baby still had the placenta attached. The infant was named Baby No. 59 (after the number on his incubator) and touched the hearts of many. People from all over came to the hospital to donate blankets, formula, bottles, and clothes, and some even offered to adopt him.
Police traced the young woman after they became suspicious, finding baby toys and bloodstained toilet paper in her apartment. Initially, she denied being the mother but eventually confessed. The authorities initially treated the case as attempted homicide, but after speaking with the mother, they concluded it was an accident, with the mother too frightened to come forward. The baby boy suffered only minor scratches and bruising and was released into his mother's care a few days after the incident.
8. Dylan Micallef

Baby Dylan was found abandoned for nearly a week before being discovered. His mother, Renee Micallef, had been in a severe motorcycle accident years earlier, which led to chronic pain and an addiction to painkillers. People who knew her said she was a loving mother and that those dark days were behind her. The last time mother and son were seen together was after a shopping trip, with a neighbor reporting that Renee had bags full of items for her son.
Visitors came to the house later, but Renee didn’t respond to the door. As days passed with no word or sight of her, the police were called and forced entry into the house. There, they found eight-month-old Dylan Micallef lying partially underneath his deceased mother—on the brink of death himself. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but soon began to recover. Authorities believe Renee passed away from an accidental overdose.
7. Megan Hui

Baby Megan was a fighter before she even took her first breath. Megan's mother, Michelle, was six weeks pregnant when she suffered a miscarriage. Despite five ultrasound scans showing no heartbeat, confirming the miscarriage, Michelle stayed overnight at the hospital and was given two abortion pills.
Michelle was sent home with instructions to take a home pregnancy test a week later to ensure all fetal tissue had been expelled. After a week, she took the test, which surprisingly came back positive. She immediately called her doctor and arranged for a D&C (dilation and curettage) to remove any remaining tissue.
Her doctor decided to perform another ultrasound before proceeding with the procedure and discovered a faint heartbeat. Michelle had been carrying twins, and one of the babies was still alive. Doctors believe the clots and tissue from the lost twin must have cast shadows, obscuring Megan during the initial ultrasound. Michelle was filled with joy. Megan was born without any complications from either the miscarriage or the abortion.
6. Aleah Crago

On May 3, 1999, a devastating tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma, claiming 36 lives and causing over $1 billion in damages. Hundreds of families, including baby Aleah Crago's, lost their homes in the disaster.
During the ferocious storm, the Crago family took shelter in a closet. Amy, Aleah's mother, held her 10-month-old daughter on her lap as the rest of the family huddled around them. When the catastrophic EF5 tornado struck, it tore the roof off and sucked everyone out, ripping baby Aleah from her mother's arms.
As Officer Robert Jolley was surveying the damage path, he found Amy, who was face-down and partly covered by a flatbed trailer about 30 meters (100 feet) from where her home had once stood. She was still alive and urgently asked Officer Jolley to find her baby girl. Shortly after, he spotted what he initially thought was a doll lying in the mud, but then the 'doll' moved. He rushed over and grabbed the baby girl. The entire rescue was captured on his cruiser’s dashcam. She was reunited with her mother at the hospital, where she was treated for a bruised lung and a deep scratch on her thigh.
5. Jamie Ogg

Kate Ogg went into labor with her twins at just 27 weeks of pregnancy. She first delivered a baby girl, who had a promising prognosis. However, the second baby, Jamie, was pronounced dead after birth. His parents were devastated, but shortly after, Jamie gasped for air. The doctors dismissed it as merely a reflex and assured them that he had already passed away.
In her heartbreak, Kate unwrapped Jamie and placed his tiny, lifeless body on her chest. She and her husband lovingly told him how much they loved him and what they dreamed of doing with him. Then, he gasped for air once more. Kate offered him a drop of breast milk on her finger, and to their amazement, he took it. The premature baby, who had been legally declared dead, opened his eyes. Jamie was quickly rushed to the NICU, where he began to thrive. Both babies were eventually discharged healthy after a few months in the hospital.
4. Musa Dayib

Fifteen-month-old Musa Dayib was watching television with his father and three-year-old sister in the living room of their 11th-floor apartment. When their father left the room, Musa followed his sister to the balcony, which was 30 meters (100 feet) above the ground. Moments later, she rushed inside in a panic, screaming that her baby brother had fallen. The father rushed back in disbelief and, looking down from the balcony, saw his son lying motionless on the ground.
He quickly grabbed his daughter and rushed downstairs, expecting the worst. Upon arriving, he was met by neighbors who had witnessed the accident. To everyone’s relief, Musa was found alive and crying in a small patch of mulch, just a short distance from the pavement. He was immediately taken to the hospital with fractures to his ribs, spine, arms, and skull. However, to the astonishment of the doctors, he did not suffer any significant brain injuries and made a rapid recovery.
3. Mexico City’s Earthquake Babies

On September 19, 1985, a powerful 8.1 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico City, followed by a 7.1 magnitude aftershock the next day. The quakes caused devastation, resulting in over $1 billion in damage and an estimated 10,000 fatalities.
The catastrophe severely damaged two major hospitals—Benito Juarez and General Hospital—causing entire wings to collapse, including the maternity wards. Tragically, most of the newborns and mothers perished in the disaster.
In the midst of the destruction, many babies were rescued, either immediately or hours later, suffering severe and life-threatening injuries, with some succumbing to their wounds after being saved. However, against all odds, several babies and mothers were pulled from the wreckage after over a week and survived. Six newborns were recovered from the rubble five to eight days after the quake, most of them with little to no injuries. Only one baby had a serious foot injury.
The confined spaces within the rubble resembled the environment of the womb, where the newborns had spent the previous nine months. The extra fat they are born with helped maintain their body temperature through cold, rainy nights. Newborns require very little fluid in their first days of life. Dr. Holden, who treated four of the babies, remarked, 'I think that part of the answer is a fasting baby doesn’t lose much. That’s part, the rest is a miracle.'
Though many of the newborns were left orphaned after the earthquake, they were not put up for adoption. Instead, extended family members, including aunts, uncles, and grandparents, took them in and raised them. These babies received free medical care for years, allowing doctors to monitor any long-term effects as they grew.
2. Terri Calvesbert

Terri Calvesbert’s parents, Paul and Julie, had separated just two months before the fire that severely burned their daughter, leaving 90 percent of her body covered in burns. Julie was caring for her 22-month-old daughter while Paul was at work when a tragic accident occurred. She mistakenly left a cigarette on the air conditioning unit in Terri's bedroom, which ignited the drapes above it, quickly setting the room ablaze.
Hearing her daughter’s screams, Julie rushed to the bedroom but was unable to see anything due to the thick smoke. Desperate, she ran outside and tried to break a window while listening to her daughter’s agonizing cries as the fire consumed her. By the time firefighters arrived, the screams had stopped. They found what they initially thought was a burned doll. Terri's body was charred beyond recognition, with only the area covered by her wet diaper remaining unscathed.
Doctors initially did not believe she would survive the night, but against all odds, she did. Her burns were so severe that her hair would never grow back, and she lost her nose, ears, left foot, and all her fingers. To address her injuries, doctors applied artificial skin that needed to be replaced as she grew. Now, Terri wears a wig and uses a prosthetic foot. She lives a normal life in England with her father and stepmother.
Julie stopped seeing her daughter, overwhelmed by guilt. She avoided visiting Terri in the hospital and had no contact with her for ten years. The two finally reunited after Terri appeared on the documentary series Extraordinary People.
1. Erika Nordby

Baby Erika’s mother, Leyla Nordby, woke up in the middle of the night to the worst nightmare any parent could imagine: her baby was missing. The 15-month-old, wearing only a diaper, had wandered into the snow while her mother slept. Leyla searched the house frantically and discovered that the door had been left improperly closed earlier that day when the babysitter left.
Leyla ventured into the freezing night and spotted small footprints in the snow. Following them, she found her daughter, motionless in a snow bank amidst the harsh Canadian winter. The temperature that night plummeted to –24 degrees Celsius (–11 °F). She rushed Erika inside, called for help, and began performing CPR. When police and paramedics arrived, Leyla was held for five hours under suspicion of child neglect. By the time they reached the hospital, Erika had been without a heartbeat for over two hours, and her core body temperature had dropped to only 16 degrees Celsius (61 °F).
After being placed under a heating blanket, her heart miraculously started beating again. Doctors feared she would need amputations due to frostbite, but only part of her foot required skin grafts. Medical experts suggested the extreme cold may have induced a hibernation-like state, safeguarding her body from extensive harm. Erika made a full recovery and was released into her mother’s care six weeks later. She only had a minor scar from the grafts and a slight foot deformity, which was manageable with special shoes. Due to public backlash, Leyla, Erika, and their family had to relocate.
