Cicada 3301 is a name familiar to many, and those who aren’t aware will soon come across the mysterious organization that has sparked so much intrigue. With its complex puzzles, cryptic books, and a global scavenger hunt, this elusive group goes to extraordinary lengths to remain hidden.
Why, you ask? Well, that’s a question even the most dedicated conspiracy theorists struggle to answer.
What we do know is that this group is on the lookout for brilliant minds to recruit. Whether Cicada 3301 is part of a government scheme to discreetly hire future employees, or just a group of pranksters, the puzzles they present are undeniably tough. Adding in a book with a secret language to decode only complicates matters.
10. Mysterious Arrival

In January 2012, Cicada 3301 first made its public debut by posting a cryptic message along with an image of a duck on 4Chan. The message read:
Greetings. We are seeking individuals of exceptional intellect. To find them, we have created a challenge. A hidden message lies within this image. Uncover it, and it will guide you towards us. We eagerly await meeting those few who can make it through. Best of luck.
The message concluded with a signature that would become iconic over time—3301.
Solving the initial puzzle only led to more challenges. As the puzzles grew harder, only a handful managed to continue, either getting closer to being recruited or uncovering the true nature of Cicada 3301. Eventually, others began posting on Reddit and chat rooms, exchanging ideas and trying to make sense of what was really happening.
9. A World of Puzzles

One of Cicada’s most impressive challenges involved the QR codes found across the globe, appearing on stop signs, lamp posts, bus stops, and more. These locations included Haleiwa, Hawaii, and Paris, France.
This was solid evidence that a group or individual was orchestrating the puzzles. However, it also meant that participants would need to collaborate to crack the codes placed in various spots, or that someone with enough funds could travel the world to tackle them solo.
After the QR code scavenger hunt, those who solved the puzzles quickly were directed to a website that would vanish after a short time. Those who weren’t as quick received a message stating that Cicada 3301 “wanted the best, not the followers.” And with that, the puzzles for that year came to an end.
8. Enigmatic Messages

Cicada quickly became known for returning each year with fresh puzzles and escalating difficulty. While many puzzles involved deciphering codes, the more intriguing ones didn’t rely on code at all. Instead, they drew from books and famous quotes.
For instance, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance” provided the solution to one of Cicada’s puzzles. Another clue was found in William Blake’s book The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, which features the line “for everything that lives is holy.”
These references offer insight into the beliefs of this anonymous group. It appears they were searching for individuals who shared their philosophical views.
7. Where Did They Vanish To?

Once the puzzles came to a close, Cicada declared that they had found what they sought and disappeared. But the question remains: where did they go?
Few know why they leave only to return later. They rarely offer updates beyond releasing more puzzles and occasional cryptic hints. Those who succeeded in the early stages were either left to wonder in confusion or were actually chosen for recruitment. Marcus, a teenager, is one example of someone who was selected.
Marcus dedicated much of his time to solving these perplexing puzzles. After passing the tests, he was recruited and added to a dark web chat room alongside others who had also cracked the codes. Marcus found himself working on projects for Cicada with his new team, though no one seemed to fully grasp what their mission entailed.
In the end, his group project was abandoned. He hasn’t received any updates since. How strange.
6. The Book

Eventually, Cicada 3301 released a puzzle in the form of a book written in runes called The Complete Liber Primus. This created more of a collective effort to decode. Despite the attempts, only half of the book has been deciphered.
The book often assisted others in solving puzzles. For Cicada to release a book entirely encrypted for others to uncover—and purchase—suggests that everyone was overlooking a larger truth and that Cicada was attempting to guide us toward the right direction.
Unfortunately, we only understand half of the book’s meaning. Some parts can be quite perplexing at first, especially if you’re not familiar with Cicada.
5. The Winners

A considerable number of people successfully passed the test. They are still on a quest to uncover what Cicada is and why they are targeting specific individuals. One of these successful participants is known as Nox Populi.
He triumphed in the 2013 Cicada puzzle and continues to actively engage with the mystery. Nox Populi runs a YouTube channel filled with tutorials for those looking to learn more about Cicada or those preparing for future puzzles. He is very involved with the community, often meeting fans at conventions to share his experiences.
Joel Eriksson was another winner, one of the few to complete the 2012 Cicada puzzle. Like others, he felt lost when Cicada vanished after the puzzle’s completion. Eriksson worked as a cryptosecurity researcher and developer from Sweden.
4. The Silence

Cicada was well-known for emerging with new puzzles every year, though they haven’t appeared in 2019 as of now. It seems there were no new challenges in 2015 either. The location of Cicada’s headquarters is unknown, as is their history. At least one individual claimed to have been involved with Cicada for over a decade.
Some speculate that when Cicada disappears, they are preparing recruits and crafting new puzzles to release later. They may also be wrapping up old projects from the past. One example could be Project CAKES.
Marcus, who successfully completed the 2012 puzzles, mentioned that his group had been working on a project called CAKES through a website set up by Cicada 3301. It was said that CAKES was designed to protect whistleblowers from retaliation. However, as we all know, the project was eventually abandoned.
3. Unsolved

Sadly, this remains unsolved. However, with the clues we have and the book still incomplete, there’s still a chance to solve it once and for all. Those who contribute to the community and attempt to decode the book bring us one step closer to uncovering the true identity of Cicada.
Let’s hope we discover the truth soon.
2. The Theories

Many speculate that Cicada might be a government scheme to recruit new hackers, as such things have happened in the past. Alternatively, it was initially believed that the puzzles were an advertisement for a video game designed to lure people into buying it.
Some even believed Cicada was connected to a group named 3301, which allegedly hacked into Planned Parenthood. However, 3301 later clarified that they were not associated with Cicada. Cicada has made the same statement.
Some believe that Cicada could be a covert organization, akin to the Illuminati.
1. The Community

The community dedicated to unraveling the mysteries of Cicada consists of sharp minds, theorists, and those captivated by the puzzles. Much of the discussion occurs on Reddit.
Cicada has united a diverse group of people to crack its puzzles. They collaborate, learn from one another, and push through one cryptic clue after the next. Yet, the lingering question is whether anyone will decrypt the book in time to catch Cicada’s attention.
