Often dubbed Australia's counterpart to Area 51, Pine Gap remains the nation's most clandestine and restricted location. This joint US-Australian facility has been the subject of numerous reports detailing unusual occurrences and shadowy conspiracies since its inception in the early 1970s. Officially, the base is tasked with monitoring satellites in orbit.
As with many top-secret installations, the stories surrounding Pine Gap are diverse. From sightings of mysterious lights to claims of intelligence-led drone strikes with fatal outcomes, the narratives are wide-ranging. Whether these tales hold any truth or are merely the fabrications of conspiracy enthusiasts is for you to judge.
10. Deadly Drone Strikes Linked to Pine Gap

Many of us have likely witnessed news coverage of drone strikes or, more specifically, the devastating aftermath they leave behind. After a drone strike in Pakistan in July 2013 (one of many), activists alleged that the intelligence guiding these strikes came from Pine Gap. Given the already widespread distrust of the base's secrecy among Australians, these claims only deepened their skepticism.
The outrage was so intense among opponents of the strikes, including several human rights organizations, that demands arose for a UN investigation into whether the Australian government could be deemed complicit alongside the United States military. Some accusations even suggested that Australian officials might have “enabled targeted killings,” a violation of international law.
The assertions in our next entry not only support the claims of anti-drone campaigners but also imply that these allegations are just the beginning of a much larger story.
9. Edward Snowden’s Allegations Regarding Pine Gap

Whistle-blower Edward Snowden has made numerous claims in recent years—many of which have proven to be strikingly accurate. Among his assertions is that Pine Gap serves as a central hub for the NSA, facilitating their global surveillance of citizens worldwide.
As previously noted, one of Pine Gap’s official functions is to track the multitude of satellites orbiting Earth. If Snowden’s claims hold true, the infrastructure is already in place to monitor the communications of a significant portion of the global population—a capability that has likely existed for years. While this may stem from efforts to combat terrorism, it’s understandable why such revelations unsettle many individuals.
Pine Gap’s location is reportedly ideal for intercepting numerous signals while simultaneously preventing external interference.
8. The Mysterious Camouflaged Door Incident

One of the most famous incidents at Pine Gap involves three men returning from an overnight hunting trip. At approximately 4:30 AM on December 22, 1989, the hunters witnessed a “hidden door,” seamlessly blended into the natural landscape, opening before their eyes.
A massive, metallic gray disc emerged from behind the door. The object moved silently, hovering briefly above the base. As the three stunned young men watched, the disc abruptly accelerated upward at an incredible speed, vanishing in an instant. As they processed what they had seen, the camouflaged door slid back into place, sealing shut as though it had never existed.
The trio recounted their experience to a local university professor, who subsequently shared their story with UFO researcher John Lear. The professor described the witnesses as “reliable yet hesitant to elaborate on their encounter.”
7. ‘Flying Bathtubs’

Nearly a decade earlier, in 1980, a similar incident occurred. Two police officers from the Northern Territory were involved in a search for a missing child near the Pine Gap facility. Suddenly, a concealed door opened before them, revealing a bizarre sight.
To their astonishment, several bathtub-shaped objects exited the doorway and moved steadily across the base. Even more astonishing, a dark hole materialized in the nearby hills. The strange objects entered this opening before both the hole and the doorway vanished, leaving the officers bewildered.
While both officers shared their sightings with researchers, the true nature of what they witnessed remains a mystery. Interestingly, the next two incidents share striking similarities, despite occurring a decade apart.
6. Mysterious Blue Lights

In early 1973, while working for the Australian government, a cartographer experienced one of the earliest documented strange occurrences linked to Pine Gap. Just after midnight, a vivid vertical beam of blue light suddenly illuminated the area, clearly emanating from within the base.
Ignoring his instincts, he cautiously drove closer to the facility. When he reached a safe distance, he was astounded by what he saw. A massive, shimmering disc hovered approximately 300 meters (1,000 feet) above the ground.
As he observed, another beam of blue light emerged from the UFO, directed toward the ground where several radomes (protective housings for radar antennas) were located. After a brief pause, a light beam shot back from the radomes to the craft. This exchange repeated for about 30 minutes until the disc began spinning rapidly. In an instant, it soared into the sky and disappeared.
5. Enigmatic Tip Sparks Bizarre Encounters

Due to the sensitive nature of their work with the Australian government, the five individuals who witnessed a 1984 event at Pine Gap chose to remain anonymous. In the weeks leading up to the incident, the group’s leader had been receiving numerous reports of UFO sightings over Pine Gap. One particular message stood out, cryptically warning that “something significant” would occur at the base in the coming days. (The exact dates remain undisclosed to protect the identities of those involved.)
Heeding this warning, the five men divided into two teams and approached the base from different directions in separate vehicles. Once in position, they began surveilling the area.
For the first three days, nothing unusual occurred. However, on the fourth night, the situation changed dramatically. Several large military vehicles transported groups of workers in coveralls to the base’s radomes. Suddenly, a beam of light shot upward from the ground into the sky, accompanied by the formation of a peculiar cloud high above.
When the light disappeared, five unusual craft approached the base—four diamond-shaped UFOs and one cigar-shaped object. As they hovered over the base, the beam of light reappeared, this time descending from the craft to the ground. This phenomenon continued for several minutes, with the strange cloud above growing more pronounced. In an instant, the five craft vanished without a trace.
4. Unusual Activity Spotted from a Private Aircraft

In 1975, while flying a private plane near Pine Gap’s restricted airspace, the pilot and passengers were eager to catch a glimpse of the mysterious operations at the newly established and highly secretive facility. Their attention was firmly fixed on the base, and they were not disappointed.
Suddenly, a massive white object appeared to launch from the base at an astonishing speed. Before the witnesses could fully process what they were seeing, the object had already disappeared into the sky above.
The plane continued its flight, and after landing, the pilot reported the sighting. Both the pilot and passengers were instructed to wait for investigators to gather more details about their experience. Upon arrival, the investigators reportedly warned the witnesses not to discuss the incident and to essentially erase it from their memories.
3. The CIA Portal Experiments

While it’s widely acknowledged that various US intelligence agencies operate from Pine Gap, the CIA’s involvement is often viewed with the greatest skepticism. Among the most bizarre conspiracy theories are those alleging time travel experiments and super soldier programs conducted on Mars. While these claims should be taken with a hefty dose of skepticism, they remain intriguing.
Richard Sauder, mentioned earlier, claimed to have spoken with a whistle-blower named Rich Hansen. According to Sauder, Hansen was not only involved in these highly classified programs but also “departed for Mars military service through a time portal in Australia.” Although Sauder didn’t specify Pine Gap as the location, if there’s any truth to these extraordinary claims, it’s the most plausible site.
Unless the facility is declassified and its long-held secrets are revealed, the theories, claims, and sightings surrounding Pine Gap are likely to persist for years to come.
2. Operations in Alternate Dimensions

Much like the accusations leveled at CERN for attempting to open portals to other dimensions, Pine Gap has also been implicated in such activities. Researcher and author Richard Sauder explored these claims in depth in his book Underground Bases and Tunnels, where he boldly asserted that the base functions across alternate dimensions.
While these claims are already extraordinary, the explanations behind them are even more so. They involve experiments with time travel and super soldier programs conducted in the future, after which the soldiers are age-reversed and returned to the past.
As expected, few people take Sauder’s claims seriously. While it’s probable that some secretive activities occur at Pine Gap, they are almost certainly confined to our own reality.
The final entry on our list is equally bizarre.
1. The Numerous ‘Gardeners’ of Alice Springs

The Pine Gap facility has a workforce of around 1,000 individuals, most of whom reside in the nearby town of Alice Springs. These employees are primarily divided between Australian and US intelligence agencies.
Numerous researchers have delved into Alice Springs as part of their investigations into Pine Gap. Many of the town’s residents are American, but when questioned about their occupations, most claim to be gardeners. This has become an inside joke among investigators, as these “gardeners” (or others with similarly mundane job titles) are likely employed at Pine Gap.
The need for such low-profile professions hints at the highly classified nature of the work conducted at the facility. This level of secrecy often fuels suspicion, suggesting that significant activities occur there. This may explain the extraordinary nature of the final two claims on our list.
