Here are 10 accounts of brutal killers, or would-be killers, who surprisingly found their humanity and chose a different path.
10. The Bomber Who Gave Up

In 2002, Arin Ahmed Shaebat set out for the Rishon Lezion mall, carrying a backpack filled with explosives. Just a few hundred meters away, 16-year-old Issa Badir was making his way toward the gaming tables, also with a bomb in tow. The plan was for Badir to detonate his device first, drawing people toward the mall's safety, before Arin set off hers to maximize casualties. It was the bleak period of the second Palestinian Intifada, and both militants believed their actions would claim over 100 lives.
But Arin never triggered her bomb. When Badir detonated his device at the gaming tables, killing two bystanders, the survivors fled to the mall without realizing Arin had silently removed her own explosives and left. Thanks to her unexpected decision, dozens of lives were spared.
What made her change her mind? One sleeping child. As Arin entered the mall, she passed a mother holding her newborn. Reflecting on the moment later, Arin said, “I saw a baby with his mother and I thought ‘I don’t have the right from God to finish that baby’s life.’” Instead, she walked away, returning to her nearby home, where she waited to be arrested by the IDF. When released from prison in 2010, Arin publicly stated that she had no regrets about abandoning the bombing mission.

9. The Assassin Who Fell In Love

In 2011, Brazilian housewife Maria Nilza Simoes became convinced that Iranildes Aguiar Araujo was having an affair with her husband, so she hired hitman Carlos de Jesus to eliminate her for the sum of $600. A grim setup, but then something unexpected happened: de Jesus, the cold-hearted killer, gazed at Iranildes and fell deeply in love.
Instead of carrying out the murder, de Jesus confessed everything to Iranildes and proposed marriage. Then things took a bizarre turn. Instead of fleeing or refusing Maria’s money, they got married, staged Iranildes’s death using ketchup, and pocketed de Jesus’s fee. Unfortunately, they didn’t think to buy a lifetime's supply of disguises: Maria saw them kissing in public a few days later, leading her to report them to the police, who swiftly arrested all three.
8. The Unseen Guardians

Rudolf Brazda had the misfortune of being born in 1913, a time when openly gay individuals in Nazi Germany were a rare and vulnerable group. If you know your history, you can guess what followed: Brazda was arrested and sent to Buchenwald, forced to wear the pink triangle symbolizing his sexual orientation.
In those days, the pink triangle was a grim symbol: Inmates labeled as homosexuals endured treatment that was shockingly brutal, even by the notorious standards of Nazi camps. Brazda had his face savagely beaten, was taken for a mock execution, and forced into deadly labor assignments. By all rights, that should have been the end of his story—except for two guards who showed unexpected mercy.
For reasons that remain unclear, these two guards took pity on the mistreated homosexual and secretly pulled him from the forced labor details. Later, when the camp was being shut down and the inmates were herded onto a death march, one of them hid Brazda in a pigsty—an action that ultimately saved his life.
7. The Shooters Who Stopped

Earlier this year, a 16-year-old gunman entered his California school armed with a shotgun. After injuring one classmate, the would-be killer prepared to fire again when Ryan Heber stepped in. A well-liked teacher at the school, Heber calmly asked the shooter to stop and hand over his weapon. Witnesses reported that the gunman said, “I don’t want to shoot you,” and asked Heber to leave. But Heber stayed, and rather than turning his teacher into a target, the gunman handed over his weapon, preventing further bloodshed.
As incredible as this story is, it's not the only one of its kind. In 2006, a 14-year-old opened fire at a Florida school. Just before anyone was fatally wounded, teacher Jencie Fagan approached him and gave him a hug. That simple act of kindness was enough to make the would-be killer surrender his weapon, averting a tragedy. If only more stories like this had such peaceful endings.
6. The Letter That Turned a Killer Around

Unlike others we've read about, John Paul Madrona was a killer before he became a man filled with remorse. In the early 90s, he was ordered to carry out a gangland hit—but mistakenly knocked on the wrong door, tragically taking the life of innocent Tracy Takahashi. This dark chapter could have ended there, were it not for Tracy’s brother.
Before the trial, Tracy’s brother penned a heartfelt letter to Madrona, detailing how many lives had been ruined by his reckless actions. The letter concluded with these powerful words:
“You must understand that you took someone from this world who was loved deeply. Think about that for a long time. And turn your life around, whether you're behind bars or not. No excuses.”
Incredibly, these words had a profound impact on Madrona. As he later admitted, he would sit in his cell for hours, those words playing over and over in his mind—haunted by the life Tracy Takahashi could have lived. Over the years, those words began to reshape him.
He grew out his hair, covered his tattoos, and distanced himself from his gang. He stopped fighting and started attending church. Gradually, the full horror of his past life in the gang began to sink in. Fast forward 20 years, and Madrona now spends his time caring for terminally ill prisoners. Alongside easing their suffering, he helps steer young gang members away from violence, guiding them toward a more productive life. He eventually wrote a letter to Tracy’s brother, seeking his forgiveness. While it may have been too late for Tracy, thanks to his brother's letter, her death was not without meaning.
5. The Reformed Hitman

John Veasey was anything but an ordinary criminal. Once a notorious hitman from Philadelphia, he was tied to a series of murders so brutal that even the hardened Sicilian mobsters were left horrified. The most infamous of these killings was the daylight execution of mobster Mikey Ciancaglini, a hit so shocking it rattled the core of the Philadelphia underworld. Eventually, Veasey was captured and sentenced for his role in the hit. When he was released, everyone expected him to revert to his violent past—but he didn’t. Instead, Veasey found God.
Of course, it wasn’t immediate. As recently as 2008, he was arrested for smashing a glass into someone’s face. But fast-forward to 2013, and this former mafia hitman had completely renounced his life of crime, now dedicating his time to driving the church bus in a small Midwestern town.
4. The Serial Killer Who Surrendered Himself

By any reasonable standard, the story of Wayne Adam Ford is deeply unsettling. A former Marine and truck driver, Ford was responsible for the horrific murders of four prostitutes—raping, torturing, and dismembering them. By 1998, it seemed he was on the brink of becoming a serial killer, potentially taking the lives of countless more women. Then, on November 3 of that year, something truly bizarre happened—something so contrary to the nature of a violent, sadistic killer that it almost defies explanation: Ford walked into a California police station and turned himself in.
For a serial killer, this was an almost unprecedented act. Most serial killers are sociopaths, missing the key part of their brain that allows for empathy. Without this, they would be incapable of committing such horrendous acts. But Ford did something different: he not only confessed to the murders, but he also cried, expressed deep remorse, and declared that all he wanted was to die, no longer being a threat to anyone. In other words, against all odds, this twisted killer experienced a profound change of heart.
That being said, there are a few caveats to this story: Ford's decision to turn himself in doesn’t absolve him of the terrible acts he had already committed. His emotional confession doesn’t erase the monstrous deeds he had carried out. However, it does suggest that a spark of humanity remained deep within him, buried under layers of depravity. It serves as a reminder that even the worst offenders can sometimes find redemption—though, at times, it may be far too late.

3. The Transformed Dictator

To say Hugo Banzer was a 'bad guy' would be a vast understatement. As Bolivia's president in the 1970s, his regime was so corrupt and brutal that it could have given even Pinochet a run for his money. Opposition parties were banned, people mysteriously vanished, and civilians were mercilessly gunned down by his security forces. By all rights, his story should have ended in either a bloody coup or a lifetime of dictatorship. But for once, history didn’t follow the usual script.
When the age of Latin American dictatorships finally crumbled, Banzer underwent a shocking transformation. Rather than clinging to power, he started participating in the democratic process. And this wasn’t some hollow attempt at democracy like Mugabe's: he founded a political party and lost several elections with dignity. Even stranger, after winning the 1985 presidential election with less than 50% of the vote, he stepped aside to let congress elect a compromise candidate. Banzer stayed out of the limelight until 1997, when he finally won the presidency legitimately. When back in power, he refrained from turning into another Pinochet, ruling as a democratically elected leader until his death in 2002.
It may be that Banzer simply adapted to the changing times, but still: a dictator who became a supporter of democracy? It's a plot twist that feels like fiction.
2. The Terrorist Who Became a Peace Advocate

In 1974, Sean O’Callaghan was a junior member of the Irish Republican Army—a seasoned killer, bank robber, and bomber responsible for many deaths. He was seen as a rising star in the terrorist group, known for his ruthlessness. But then something changed.
As O’Callaghan recounts, one evening he was in a safe house when news broke that a female police officer had been killed. According to his account, the IRA commander sitting beside him remarked, “I hope she was pregnant, and we got two for the price of one.”
For O’Callaghan, that remark marked a turning point. Although he remained in the IRA for another five years, climbing the ranks to become a senior commander, the seed of doubt planted by that callous statement never left him. By 1983, he had become an informer, thwarting an assassination attempt on members of the British royal family. A few years later, he helped prevent a mass escape from a British prison. By 1998, he had served his time for his past crimes and was actively working to promote peace, leaving behind the violence that had defined his youth. Today, he works as a security consultant and advisor on Irish terrorism, focused on peaceful solutions. Not bad for someone once sentenced to over 500 years for terrorism.
1. The Warlord Who Gave Up

When it comes to people who would never voluntarily surrender, African warlords easily top the list, even more so than serial killers. Yet, earlier this year, a notorious Congolese war criminal known only as 'The Terminator' did precisely that.
To grasp the madness of this situation, let’s rewind a bit. Bosco Ntaganda is one of the most ruthless figures ever. Over his two-decade tenure as a rebel fighter, he led a brutal campaign involving mass rape, murder, and the complete destruction of villages, slaughtering entire populations. To make matters worse, Ntaganda forced drugged children into service as soldiers. For more than ten years, he lived openly near the Rwanda border, disregarding international arrest warrants and evading any capture efforts.
Then, in March, something unimaginable happened. This feared war criminal, notorious gangster, and merciless mass murderer walked into a US embassy, calmly requested to be arrested, and asked to be sent to the International Criminal Court. Why did he suddenly give himself up? The reasoning remains unclear, but what’s certain is that he’s now facing trial in The Hague, and justice will finally be served.
