Often regarded as a barbaric and cruel ritual tied to ancient superstitions, human sacrifice is commonly thought to have vanished centuries ago. However, this belief is far from accurate. Even in modern times, instances of human sacrifice occasionally surface. While not widespread, individuals are still being killed to satisfy spiritual demands or seek supernatural intervention. Here are some recent examples of this grim practice.

10. Amelia Espinoza2011

Among cults and religions linked to modern human sacrifices, Satanism undoubtedly ranks highest. Followers of Satanism are often drawn to ritualistic killings. A tragic example is the case of Amelia Espinoza, a 42-year-old woman from California.
The perpetrator was her own son, Moises Meraz-Espinoza, an 18-year-old factory worker. Speculations suggest Moises was deeply affected by his girlfriend’s fatal car accident, which may have driven him to commit the heinous act. Others claim the teenager had a troubled relationship with his mother, who disapproved of his interest in dark music and other aspects of his life. The prosecutor, however, argued that the murder was fueled by pure evil and Moises’s strong satanic convictions.
Regardless of the reasons, the outcome was horrifying. Meraz-Espinoza strangled Amelia and then brutally disfigured her body. He skinned her, removed her organs, and used a circular saw to cut her into pieces. Investigators discovered slices of skin and flesh stored in a freezer. Amelia’s head, found in a backpack, bore signs of ritualistic desecration: her teeth were pulled out, her eyes removed, and two inverted crosses carved into her skull. A satanic bible with instructions on human sacrifice was also found, and the date of her death coincided with a significant day for sacrifices in the satanic calendar.
After the murder, Moises approached his cousin for help in disposing of the body, but she convinced him to turn himself in. Meraz-Espinoza was later found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. The judge remarked, “I don’t know what I can say to change your life, but you’ll have plenty of time to reflect on your actions,” addressing the young man who had practiced human sacrifice.
9. Lalita Tati2011

On October 21, 2011, seven-year-old Lalita was enjoying a TV show at her neighbor’s house in the remote village of Jailwara. These moments of joy may have been her last. Shortly after, she was kidnapped. A week later, her devastated parents discovered her mutilated body.
Initially, authorities suspected the young girl had been sexually assaulted and murdered. Her father claimed he was detained and tortured by police in an attempt to force a confession. However, two impoverished, uneducated local farmers were later apprehended for the crime.
Investigations revealed that Lalita was killed as part of a ritual to ensure a bountiful harvest. Her throat was slit, and her liver was removed as an offering to a goddess. Police found money near her body, suggesting it was a sacrificial act. The accused men confessed to the murder and now face the possibility of a death sentence.
8. ‘Adam’2001

On a typical September day in London, an object was seen floating in the Thames. It turned out to be the mutilated torso of a young boy wearing orange shorts. The body was missing its head, legs, and arms, and all blood had been drained. Despite extensive efforts by authorities to solve the case, the killers remained elusive. Identifying the victim was equally challenging, leading to the boy being named “Adam.” However, the investigation uncovered chilling details about his murder.
Forensic analysis indicated that Adam originated from West Africa, likely Nigeria, and had only been in the United Kingdom for a few days before his death. He was five years old. On his final day, Adam was deprived of food but was administered substances, including calabar beans, often used in sacrificial rituals. These drugs sedated and paralyzed him.
Adam’s throat was then slit. Investigators believe his killers drank his blood from a vessel made from his skull. The motive? Authorities suspect the perpetrators—possibly a human trafficking ring—thought the sacrifice would bring them prosperity. Over time, police pieced together much of the puzzle and even identified a woman connected to Adam. However, his killers have yet to face justice.
7. Elyse Pahler1995

In 1996, eight months after she went missing, the body of 15-year-old Elyse Pahler was discovered in a eucalyptus grove near her home. She was partially unclothed and positioned beneath a pentagram. The location was revealed by 16-year-old Royce Casey, one of her killers, who first confessed to a priest and then to the police.
Casey, along with his accomplices, 14-year-old Joseph Fiorella and 16-year-old Jacob Delashmutt, had plotted Pahler’s murder for months. The trio idolized Slayer, a band notorious for its misogynistic and satanic themes. (Delashmutt later claimed the band’s music had no real impact on their actions.) The boys believed sacrificing a virgin to Satan would bring them power and fame.
One day, the teenagers turned their dark fantasies into reality. They lured Elyse to a secluded grove under the pretense of smoking marijuana. Once there, they strangled her with a belt, stabbed her with a hunting knife, and crushed her neck under their feet. Not satisfied, the trio then sexually assaulted her lifeless body.
Ultimately, the teenage followers of Satan were prosecuted and handed long prison terms.
6. Theresa Simmons1988

In 1988, a Louisiana police patrol noticed a suspicious van and pulled it over. Inside were three teenagers: Terry Belcher, Robert McIntyre, and Malisa Earnest. Belcher, the driver, claimed they were on vacation, but officers grew suspicious. A records check revealed the van was stolen, leading to the trio’s arrest.
Hours later, a girl released from the same jail for loitering informed a jailer of a horrifying story. Malisa Earnest, her cellmate, had confessed to a murder during their time in custody. According to Malisa, she and another girl were hitchhiking when Belcher and McIntyre picked them up. They drove to a secluded farmhouse, where they smoked marijuana and listened to heavy metal. However, the situation turned dark, culminating in the ritualistic sacrifice of Malisa’s companion to Satan.
Authorities took Malisa’s account seriously. Investigations revealed that Malisa, 17-year-old Theresa Simmons, and two other girls had recently fled a juvenile detention center. While the other two girls returned, Earnest and Simmons did not. Theresa had called a friend, expressing distrust toward Belcher and McIntyre and stating her intention to return soon, but she never did.
The investigation confirmed that Malisa’s story was largely accurate. The group had spent the evening using drugs and listening to heavy metal music. Later, they began praying to Satan and decided to sacrifice Theresa. The three took turns strangling her with a shoelace before burying her body.
Further inquiries revealed Belcher’s deep devotion to Satan. He admitted to sacrificing animals, drinking their blood, and consuming their eyes and organs. Belcher and McIntyre were sentenced to life imprisonment, while Earnest, as an accomplice, received a three-year prison term.
5. Aakash Singh2006

Sumitra Bushan, a middle-aged woman from the remote Indian village of Barha, lived a life marked by hardship. Abandoned by her husband and burdened with debt, she received no support from her two grown sons, who were widely seen as lazy and unhelpful.
Her situation deteriorated further. The family began experiencing nightmares and terrifying visions of the goddess Kali. Sumitra believed they were cursed and sought advice from a tantric—a traveling priest who occasionally visited the village. He instructed her to sacrifice a chicken at her doorstep and offer its body and blood to Kali. Sumitra followed his instructions.
However, Kali remained unsatisfied. The nightmares persisted and intensified. Sumitra returned to the tantric, who proposed a more extreme solution: a human sacrifice, specifically a young boy from the village. Without hesitation, Sumitra and her sons kidnapped three-year-old Aakash Singh from their neighbors’ home. They performed a ritual, chanting mantras, burning incense, and anointing the terrified child with oils. Aakash’s nose, ears, and hands were then severed, and his bleeding body was placed before an image of Kali.
The next day, Sumitra claimed she had found Aakash’s mutilated body near her home, but the villagers were unconvinced. They attacked her sons, forcing one to confess. He admitted to killing the child to help his mother. Despite the sacrifice, Sumitra’s troubles persisted. She and her sons were imprisoned, while the tantric who orchestrated the ritual was never found.
4. Unknown Bangladeshi Man2010

When faced with a failing business, most people seek solutions. Four bricklayers in Bangladesh took an unconventional and horrifying approach to address their problems.
In northern Bangladesh, the owners of a brickfield were frustrated. They aimed to produce red bricks, highly prized in rural areas for their perceived quality. Despite their efforts, the bricks remained discolored.
A fortune teller was consulted, who suggested a human sacrifice to achieve the desired brick color. The brickfield owners relayed this advice to their workers, leading to the beheading of a 26-year-old bricklayer. His head was then burned in a kiln. The four perpetrators were arrested, but the brickfield owners and the fortune teller remain at large.
3. Monu Kumar2003

Madan and Murti Simaru longed for a son in a society that prized male children over females. Living in India, where sons are highly valued, they grew desperate after having a daughter. Nature seemed to have failed them, so they turned to a tantric—a common recourse for the poor and uneducated in India.
The tantric offered a horrifying solution: a human sacrifice. Murti enlisted her brother Popin to kidnap six-year-old Monu Kumar, their neighbor’s son. The couple took the boy to an irrigation canal, where they brutally killed and mutilated him in a fertility ritual. They concluded the ritual by bathing in the child’s blood.
The Simarus were eventually arrested, along with two relatives and the tantric who had advised the sacrifice. While their punishment remains unclear, it is unlikely Madan and Murti ever had the chance to see if the ritual worked and conceive a son.
2. Praveen From Chhattisgarh2012

Unlike many tantrics linked to human sacrifices who evade capture, Dilip Rathia was an exception.
Dilip, a tantric, sought divine powers or, as some reports suggest, good fortune. A deity appeared to him in a dream, proposing a grim exchange: behead a boy to have his wish fulfilled. Dilip obeyed. In 2012, he murdered 11-year-old Praveen from the Indian village of Barpali, beheading the boy and offering his head to the deity.
The deity, however, did not uphold its end of the deal. Police discovered Praveen’s skeleton and pieced together the crime. A raid on Rathia’s home uncovered the child’s head, forcing the tantric to confess. He was subsequently sentenced to death.
1. Melissa Ann Meyer1988

On a tragic morning in 1988, 19-year-old Melissa Ann Meyer’s life came to an end. Days later, her body was found in a transient campsite, stripped of any personal belongings like her purse, wallet, or jewelry.
The killers, 21-year-old Jason Wayne Rose and 17-year-old John Ray Jones, had lured Melissa to a secluded wooded campsite. Investigators discovered occult items in their trailer, including a spell book detailing how to communicate with the dead.
The investigation revealed that Rose and Jones were involved in occult practices. Melissa was likely killed as part of a ritual sacrifice. She was struck with a machete and then strangled. Her killers also stole all her valuables. However, their actions did little to help them evade justice. Both were quickly apprehended, convicted of murder and robbery, and sentenced accordingly.
