There are three kinds of people when it comes to the supernatural. Some actively seek out spirits, drawn to paranormal experiences. Others are willing to believe the tales they hear from others. Then, there are those who want nothing to do with it, yet find themselves caught in their own terrifying encounters. Here are 10 of the most shocking paranormal stories.
10. Talking Toys

A young boy received a Furby as a gift, but after a while, he grew tired of it and placed the toy on a shelf in the basement to gather dust. Later, one evening, the boy’s older brother and his friend were hanging out in the same basement and eventually fell asleep there.
They were suddenly awoken by a child's voice calling out, 'Come play with me!' Although they thought nothing was strange about the toy—unaware that it couldn’t speak English—they brushed it off and went back to sleep. The next morning, they realized that Furbies only speak when moved, and they only make gibberish sounds. To top it off, the toy had no batteries in it.
9. Energy Conduits

When a paranormal investigator's father shared a story about a spirit haunting his childhood home, he couldn’t resist investigating. Along with some friends, they discovered that the spirit was a malevolent witch who seemed to drain their energy. In addition to capturing eerie audio, the investigator witnessed an apparition hovering behind his friend. As he explained this, they heard the spirit’s voice again, and simultaneously caught an orb on camera leaving the scene. Meanwhile, another friend, though well-rested, was inexplicably exhausted, sitting on the stairs, completely drained.
It requires a lot of power for a spirit to cross the veil. Most paranormal investigation tools are built to withstand such attacks and even enhance their signals by filtering through different frequencies.
8. The Edinburgh Vaults

In Scotland, the Edinburgh Vaults are a network of rooms under the South Bridge that were once used as taverns, workshops, and storage spaces. Over time, businesses left, and the homeless moved in, followed by illegal gambling rings and body dumping grounds for murderers. The vaults were sealed off in the 1800s, though they were rediscovered in the 1980s. Since their reopening, numerous people have reported being attacked or scratched by a demonic spirit they call Mr. Boots, believed to be the murderer of a young woman. When archaeologists reopened the vaults, they found her body in one of the chambers.
The Ghost Adventures crew from Travel Channel spent an entire night locked in the Vaults, deliberately provoking the spirit by shining flashlights and challenging Mr. Boots to respond. When the lead investigator pushed the spirit too far, their electrical meter registered a spike of over 25 ohms of energy, which is comparable to the strength of a small magnet.
7. The Apartment from Hell

A college student returned home for winter break, and her friend claimed that her house was haunted. As an enthusiastic ghost enthusiast, the student and her friend conducted an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) session in the master bedroom. During the session, the group began to experience strange headaches and stomach pains. The friend revealed that her grandparents had passed away in that room. However, the session was interrupted by noises coming from the kitchen. They relocated to the kitchen for their EVP session, but it became unexpectedly hot, as if an oven had been turned on, even though it hadn’t.
Grasping at hands, one friend began praying and attempting to expel the spirit, only for their hands to suddenly separate on their own. Something ominous was rising from the basement, and a shadow with horns stretched across the wall. The friend shouted at the spirit to leave, but the next thing she knew, she was lying on the floor, fully disoriented, five minutes later. Her friends fled the house, and when she finally left, they told her she smelled like fire and ash and had a red handprint on her ankle.
6. The Mansfield House

A woman’s son was laid off from work, so he and his fiancée moved in with her, and she was glad to have company in the house. The fiancée placed their baby down for a nap, with the baby monitor beside the crib. As she went downstairs to prepare lunch, the monitor began playing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.' They didn’t have any musical toys in the crib. Then, the son’s name was heard over the monitor, followed by the baby’s terrified screams.
Later, the mother began having nightmares about a young girl who had been abused by nuns. In one dream, the nuns threw the girl against a wall, and the mother awoke, knowing the girl had died. The mother researched the house and found that a concrete chamber had been added to the foundation. She and her son broke it open, discovering the cremated remains of the young girl.
5. The Woman in White

At the Honolulu Police Department’s Training Facility, a security guard was on duty one night when the outdoor wooden shutters began opening and closing violently. When he approached, they suddenly stopped. Continuing his shift, he saw a woman in a white dress walking toward him across the parking lot. He assumed she needed help, but never heard the gate open and wondered how she had gotten inside.
The guard asked if she needed assistance, but she said nothing and continued walking toward the house, her gaze fixed straight ahead. When he turned around and saw nothing unusual, he turned back to the woman, only to find that she had disappeared. Later, when he sat down for a break, the woman was sitting across from him. Terrified, he fled and never returned for another shift. The woman in white is often a victim, and it's believed that something tragic must have happened to her spirit, causing it to remain.
4. Third Time’s the Charm

In San Jose, California, the famous Winchester Mystery House was constructed using sacred geometry, designed to connect the building with the astral plane. Whether this intention was meant to assist the spirits or confuse them remains uncertain.
A paranormal investigator had visited the house before with some friends, and upon returning, they found themselves standing in the hallway when a light flickered at the far end, as if someone had walked by. Rushing across the labyrinth, they asked the spirit if it had passed them by. They received a vocal response, accompanied by an overwhelming feeling that they were unwelcome and should not return to the house a third time.
3. Brothers and Basements

An older brother and his family moved to a suburban home, and his younger brother, around five or six years old, refused to go downstairs. The family thought it was typical childhood fear. However, a few months later, the younger brother broke down at the dinner table, sobbing and pointing toward the basement door, saying, 'It’s staring at me!' The house seemed to settle after the family comforted him, but when the older brother’s birthday came around, things took a dark turn.
He heard a singing voice, and thinking it was his parents, he went downstairs, but found no one there. He returned to his room, only to hear the song again, this time coming from the vents leading to the basement. A few weeks later, his younger brother disappeared, and the family searched the house frantically but couldn’t find him. They heard him crying from the vents. The mother stopped the older son from going into the basement, where she saw a shadow shaped like a man. She shouted for it to leave her house and her sons alone, and after the spirit vanished, she found the younger son in the basement.
2. Mount Vernon

On the 4th of July, a history enthusiast visited George Washington’s estate. Despite it being the middle of summer in Virginia, the house was sweltering due to the lack of modern cooling systems. However, when the visitor entered Washington’s room, the very place where he passed away, the temperature was freezing cold.
She peeked around the door frame, where a delineator kept guests from stepping inside the room. As she paused by the washbasin and mirror, she suddenly felt the sensation of being watched. Trying to move, she found herself unable to speak or call for help. She then felt an unseen presence walk toward her and stare her down until she was finally released, falling to the floor. Terrified, she wanted to leave the house immediately, even though she had been the one to suggest the trip. Her family still doesn’t believe her account.
1. Galveston Graveyard

A well-known YouTube vlogger, famous for her dark and gothic aesthetic, shared that when she was around three years old, she became seriously ill. During this time, she hovered between life and death, which opened a channel allowing her to connect with spirits. As a teenager, she regularly visited Galveston’s oldest cemetery, where she found solace in the company of spirits, much like one would with friends. She even felt drawn to certain tombstones.
During a video in which she was explaining her experiences, the vlogger had to replace her battery as it continually drained. She went on to mention that she had bought a new car, but the electrical system, radio, and AC kept malfunctioning. Additionally, while every room in her house was equipped with carbon monoxide detectors, only the one in her bedroom had gone off.
While shopping, the vlogger passed a girl and immediately felt a wave of intense sadness. She stopped to talk to her and learned that the girl’s grandparents had recently passed. Intrigued, the vlogger researched names from the Galveston Graveyard, discovering that the girl was the great-granddaughter of the tombstones she had been visiting.
