However, metal detecting isn't always as enjoyable as it seems. Some adventurers have stumbled upon items they never expected, with discoveries ranging from creepy painted mannequins to severed body parts. Let’s take a look at some of the most bizarre things unearthed during metal detecting expeditions.
10. A World War II Hand Grenade
Metal detecting can be all fun and games, but things take a dangerous turn when you come across something life-threatening, like an unexploded World War II hand grenade. This is exactly what happened to a YouTuber known as Silver Steve Detecting.
In a video posted on July 30, 2016, the online creator and avid metal-detecting enthusiast shares the story of his walk along a beach in the UK, a location once home to many World War bunkers. On that particular day, he was metal detecting as usual when he came across something unexpected and dangerous—an undetonated hand grenade!
Luckily, Steve quickly alerted the local authorities, who dispatched experts to handle the situation. The grenade was safely detonated from a distance, and thankfully, no one was harmed. This incident confirmed that the grenade had never been used and posed a real danger to those visiting the beach. It was almost like a ticking time bomb.

Guns are inherently dangerous, often used for harm, intimidation, and, tragically, death. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that finding a weapon with a metal detector is far from common. No one ever expects to stumble upon something like this, especially when it’s suspiciously wrapped up. Believe it or not, that’s exactly what happened to YouTuber Deep Digger Dan.
In a 2021 YouTube video, Dan ventured into the woods with his metal detector to do what he enjoys most: uncovering treasures and creating content. What seemed like a typical day, beginning with the discovery of an old coin, quickly took a bizarre turn. As he was preparing to leave the forest, his detector picked up an odd signal, leading him to find a hand pistol wrapped in bubble wrap!
Typically, if this had been a military-grade pistol or one still in working condition, you wouldn’t expect it to be wrapped in such a manner! Once Dan carefully unwrapped the bubble wrap, his fears were realized; it was a pistol heavily corroded by rust, making it nearly unrecognizable. Following proper procedure, he contacted the police to report his discovery. The weapon was in such poor condition that the authorities were unable to determine if it had been used in a crime. Regardless, it was an extraordinary and unsettling find, don't you think?

In 2013, a man out metal detecting discovered an underground room filled with stones and rusty chains! At first, no one could explain what the room was, but various theories emerged.
Many locals speculated that the room had once been used as a storage space by a family that owned the land, and that they had passed away years before the discovery. But what were the rusty chains for? Some suggested the room had been inherited by another family member after the original owners left, while others believed the space had been used for mysterious or even paranormal purposes. Throughout history, people have often linked the unknown to spiritual or dark forces.
What remains undeniable is that finding an underground room while metal detecting is no everyday occurrence; it’s certainly a strange and rare discovery!

Metal detecting is meant to be a fun activity, but sometimes it can be downright unsettling. This is the tale of a metal-detecting enthusiast and content creator known as MetalDetecting24. While going about his usual metal-detecting routine, his detector went off, leading him to a blue cylinder, sealed and buried beneath the earth.
Naturally, his curiosity got the better of him, and he opened the can. To his shock, he initially thought he had uncovered a dismembered human head, only to realize it was actually a mannequin head. Still, it was painted in red, with what appeared to be a knife stuck into the side of its head, held together with tape.
In another metal box, similar to a lunchbox, was what looked like a time capsule. It remains a mystery why someone would go to such lengths to create such an object. While the discovery might not be as terrifying as others on this list, stumbling upon something like this in a forest is enough to send shivers down anyone's spine.
6. Human Skeletal Remains
Mike Smith was a seasoned and skilled metal-detecting enthusiast with years of experience. When his detector signaled the presence of an old chain on the surface of the ground, he didn’t think much of it; it was just another typical day for him. But it quickly turned into something far from ordinary! As Mike grasped the chain and began to pull, he realized it led to an underground secret room. The more he tugged, the more he uncovered strange patterns on the walls.
The walls of the underground space were etched with symbols resembling Roman letters and seemed to lead further down into the earth. Before long, Mike stumbled upon what appeared to be the remains of a long-forgotten body. From the chain that led to the hidden hole to the mysterious inscriptions on the walls and the discovery of human remains, everything about Mike’s find was bizarre! With the police and media involved, it’s safe to say that Mike’s life was turned upside down after his extraordinary discovery.

Finding ancient coins while metal detecting is not all that unusual. However, stumbling upon a jar brimming with cash is a rare and thrilling experience. Normally, you’ll come across a coin here and there, but when a YouTuber named “OLAF Treasure Hunting & Metal Detecting Diver” unearthed a container packed with coins by a stream, it was anything but a typical day.
On that particular day, the YouTuber ventured to the stream to do some routine metal detecting. However, when his metal detector began to beep, he dug into the ground and uncovered a rusted tin filled with coins believed to be from the World War II era. But who could have buried this container there? Did the person survive the war, only to forget their treasure? Sadly, we may never know the answers.
4. Treasures Hidden Inside a Rock
There are countless hiding spots for treasures, but who would think to hide theirs inside a rock? How does one even manage that? As it turns out, ancient people were quite the risk-takers because someone actually did it! While metal detecting, a YouTuber known as Treasure Hunting was walking past some rocks when his detector suddenly went off, leading him to a surprising discovery.
Using his tools, he managed to break through the rock, only to uncover a stash of hidden treasures. Along with the treasure, he also found jewelry and other items that had evidently been of great value to the person who concealed them there. Finding treasure with a metal detector is one thing, but stumbling upon it buried inside a rock is an entirely different story.
3. A Wedding Ring Discovered in a Tree Stump
Wedding rings can be lost in all sorts of places, but finding one in a tree stump is definitely unusual unless it was purposely hidden there.
The X-Finds YouTube channel is famous for sharing incredible metal detecting discoveries and has gathered a large following. In one of their videos, a treasure hunter uses a metal detector to uncover a wedding ring tucked away inside a tree stump!

2. A Treasure Hunter Uncovers an Assault Rifle in His Backyard
Finding something as unexpected as an assault rifle is one thing, but stumbling upon one buried in your own backyard is another level of surprise. While digging in his backyard to level the ground, a treasure hunter and YouTube creator uncovered a black polythene bag. Inside it was a rifle, much to his shock.
He notified the authorities, who followed protocol by surveying the area. As a metal detecting enthusiast, you would typically expect to uncover treasures far from home, but occasionally, some individuals get lucky twice!

The items discovered during metal detecting often give us clues about the personality of their original owner. While I’m not implying anything, finding a pistol, money, and a skull-shaped belt buckle might suggest that the community wasn’t too fond of the person who once possessed them.
That being said, a YouTuber known as Nuggetnoggin found these very items while metal detecting in a river. Metal detectors are designed to find objects like this, but discovering them all together and so close to one another is quite an odd occurrence.
