After a long and harsh winter, the days are now longer and the weather is warming up. While this brings joy and excitement to those of us longing for sunny walks, there’s one downside to sandal season: footwear that can damage our tired feet.

There’s no denying that some sandal designs can lead to foot and ankle issues. Unfortunately, these are often the most fashionable styles.
Dr. Priya Parthasarathy, a podiatrist at U.S. Foot & Ankle Specialists, explained that improper sandals can cause serious conditions like Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, big toe pain, and even stress fractures. Choosing the right sandal can help prevent foot pain over time.
Dr. Parthasarathy shared that she sees many patients come in late summer, particularly in August and September, a period she calls “plantar fasciitis season.” This results from wearing unsupportive sandals—often flexible flip-flops—throughout the summer. It’s essential to wear supportive shoes during the busy summer months.
Parthasarathy emphasized that avoiding soft, flimsy sandals is crucial, even if they seem comfortable. “A completely flat sandal is just as harmful as a high heel,” she explains. “Another warning sign is a sandal that can be easily bent in half or one that doesn’t offer enough width for your feet. The sandal's width is essential to accommodate your feet and any conditions like bunions, neuromas, and hammertoes.”
Sadly, certain individuals should avoid sandals altogether. If you're in the process of treating a foot injury, tendinitis, or a fracture, now isn’t the right time to wear sandals. If you're unsure, Dr. Parthasarathy suggests consulting with your podiatrist.
When shopping for sandals, keep an eye out for these important features:
- Built-in arch support, and even better if the sandal offers removable arch support, allowing you to add your own orthotics or extra support when needed.
- A slight wedge that helps relieve pressure on the Achilles tendon and the plantar fascia.
- An adjustable ankle strap that provides stability to the foot and lowers the risk of ankle sprains.
- Correct width.
Now that we’ve learned how to maintain healthy feet during the active summer months, it's time to get some shopping done.

3. Birkenstock Honolulu flip-flop

We spoke with Dr. Chanel J. Perkins, a board-certified podiatrist based in Texas, about what to look for in supportive flip-flops. She emphasized the importance of a flip-flop with good arch support, a cushioned footbed, and a sturdy base that won’t easily bend. According to Dr. Perkins, "If it bends in half like a soft taco, it won’t offer the support you need." She suggests that flip-flops should mold to the shape of your foot.
Dr. Perkins also recommended these waterproof EVA sporty sandals from Birkenstock, which resemble their classic cork sandals but are more suitable for beach or poolside use. The footbed is made from soft, flexible materials designed to cushion each step and provide a secure fit.
Find them on Zappos for $34.95 (available in women's sizes 5–12.5, men's sizes 6–1, and two colors).
4. Orthofeet Gaya flip-flop
