Watching a tragic event unfold on video triggers a deep emotional response within us. Ever since video cameras were invented, significant moments have been recorded, preserved, and made accessible to the public. These recordings often depict individuals facing unexpected disasters, yet they provide valuable lessons for society. Many of the videos featured in this compilation have been extensively analyzed by experts worldwide to help prevent similar tragedies in the future. While some may criticize the creation of such a list, each video was carefully chosen through a rigorous selection process. This is the first installment of a two-part series, and to avoid causing unnecessary distress, the videos are provided as links rather than being embedded directly.
10. Versailles Wedding Hall Disaster

Date: May 24, 2001 Casualties: 23 People
The Versailles wedding hall, situated in southeast Jerusalem, became the site of a tragic event on the night of May 24, 2001. Keren and Asaf Dror were hosting their wedding reception there, with hundreds of guests in attendance. The celebration was in full swing when a significant section of the third floor suddenly collapsed. This catastrophic failure resulted in the deaths of 23 people and left 380 others injured. The incident remains the worst civil disaster in Israel's history. The public was deeply shaken, not only by the high number of casualties but also because the collapse was captured on video. The footage was later broadcast on both local and international news channels.
The video of the collapse is deeply disturbing, clearly showing how a single section of the floor gave way, creating a massive hole. During the rescue operations, three individuals were miraculously pulled alive from the wreckage. Investigations determined that the disaster was not the result of a terrorist attack. Witnesses reported noticing a noticeable sag in the floor shortly before the collapse, which is also visible in the footage. Initial findings attributed the failure to the Pal-Kal construction method, which uses lightweight, coffered concrete floor systems.
The section of the building that collapsed was originally designed as a two-story structure. However, during construction, it was decided to add a third story to match the height of the other side. Eli Ron, the engineer who invented the Pal-Kal construction method, was arrested and charged with manslaughter in August 2002. In response to the tragedy, the Israeli Parliament passed the Versailles Law, creating a special committee to assist those injured in the disaster. In October 2004, the three owners of the Versailles wedding hall were found guilty of negligence leading to death and injury. [Clip]
9. Ramstein Airshow Disaster

Date: August 28, 1988 Casualties: 70 People
On August 28, 1988, the annual Ramstein Airshow in West Germany drew a crowd of 300,000 people. Held at the U.S. Ramstein Air Base, the event turned tragic when multiple Aermacchi MB-339 PAN jets collided mid-air. The accident claimed the lives of 67 spectators and three pilots, with 346 others suffering severe injuries from the explosion and fire that followed. This incident stands as the second-deadliest air show disaster in history. The collision occurred during a performance by the Italian Air Force's Frecce Tricolori team, which was executing a pierced heart formation. This maneuver involves two groups of aircraft forming a heart shape, with a single plane piercing through it toward the audience.
During the performance, the aircraft responsible for piercing the heart collided with two other jets. The impact caused the plane to crash onto the runway, disintegrating upon impact. The wreckage and a fireball from the aviation fuel spilled into the spectator area, striking the crowd and stopping near a refrigerated trailer. The crash site was located in what was considered the prime viewing area. One pilot managed to eject but died upon hitting the runway before his parachute could deploy. The entire event, captured on video, unfolded in less than seven seconds, leaving no time for the audience to react or escape the debris.
The Ramstein disaster, like many tragedies, has sparked conspiracy theories. Two months prior, Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 crashed into the Tyrrhenian Sea, killing all 81 passengers. The Italian government has never provided a definitive explanation for the crash, which is referred to as the Ustica Massacre in Italian media. The involvement of Italian Air Force personnel in the incident remains unclear.
Several members of the Italian Air Force were investigated and faced charges related to the disaster, including falsifying documents, perjury, abuse of office, and obstruction of justice. Four generals were accused of high treason for allegedly hindering the government's investigation by withholding critical information about air traffic during the Ustica disaster. Speculation suggests that two of the pilots killed in the Ramstein airshow, Lt. Col. Nutarelli and Lt. Col. Naldini, may have known details about the Ustica Massacre. [Clip]
8. Bradford City Stadium Fire

Date: May 11, 1985 Casualties: 56 People
Valley Parade, a football stadium in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, was constructed in 1886 and has served as the home ground for Bradford City A.F.C. since 1903. The team achieved promotion to the top football division in 1908 and secured their only major honor, the FA Cup, in 1911. On May 11, 1985, a crowd of 11,076 gathered to watch Bradford City’s final Division Three match of the season against Lincoln City. The game was tied 0–0 after 40 minutes when a small fire broke out three rows from the main stand. Within moments, the flames rapidly spread across the stadium. The roof of Valley Parade began to collapse, showering the crowd with timber and asphalt. The entire stand was consumed by fire in under four minutes.
Thick black smoke filled the rear passageways as fans desperately sought escape. Some tried to flee through narrow pathways that led to locked exits, forcing most to run onto the field for safety. The fire claimed the lives of 56 spectators and injured at least 265 others. Investigators believe the blaze started when a lit cigarette or match fell through gaps in the stands, igniting debris below. In 1985, the stadium’s seating lacked risers, allowing a significant buildup of trash and paper beneath the stands. Geoffrey Mitchell, an eyewitness, recounted to the BBC, “It spread like a flash. I’ve never seen anything like it.” This tragedy remains the deadliest fire in British football history. Since the disaster, Valley Parade has undergone extensive renovations. [Clip]
7. Alexander I of Yugoslavia

Date: October 9, 1934
Since the advent of video cameras, several high-profile political assassinations have been recorded. This article highlights two of the most significant: the deaths of Alexander I of Yugoslavia and John F. Kennedy of the United States. Other notable political figures assassinated on video include Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, Pakistani politician Benazir Bhutto, Mexican leader Luis Donaldo Colosio, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat, and Japanese businessman Kazuo Nagano, whose 1985 murder shocked the world after he defrauded 3,855 people, mostly elderly, of 12 billion yen. Alexander I was the first king of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia (1929–34) and the last king of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (1921–29). He ascended to the throne in 1921 following his father’s death, inheriting a kingdom informally known as Yugoslavia.
On January 6, 1929, King Alexander dissolved Yugoslavia’s Constitution, suspended Parliament, and established a personal dictatorship known as the January 6th Dictatorship. That same month, he attempted to abolish the Serbian Cyrillic alphabet by decree, promoting the exclusive use of the Latin script. By 1931, he introduced a new Constitution that centralized executive power in the monarchy. On October 9, 1934, Alexander traveled to Marseilles to strengthen ties with the Third French Republic as part of the Little Entente, an alliance between Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia. While riding in a car with French Foreign Minister Louis Barthou, a gunman named Vlado Chernozemski emerged from the crowd and fatally shot the king and his driver. Barthou was also killed, accidentally shot by a French police officer during the chaos.
This event marked one of the earliest assassinations ever recorded on film. The cameraman, positioned just feet away, captured not only the shooting but also its immediate aftermath. The assassin, Vlado Chernozemski, was a skilled marksman and a Bulgarian member of the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO). After killing King Alexander, he was struck down by a mounted French policeman’s sword and subsequently beaten to death by the enraged crowd. The footage shows Alexander’s lifeless body, a grim reminder of the tragedy. At the time, the IMRO was a political group advocating for Vardar Macedonia’s independence from Yugoslavia. Some theories suggest the organization was secretly backed by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. The film of Alexander I’s assassination remains one of the most significant newsreels in history. 6. Sknyliv Airshow Disaster

Date: July 27, 2002 Casualties: 77 People
On July 27, 2002, more than 10,000 people attended an airshow at Sknyliv airfield (now Lviv International Airport) near Lviv, Ukraine. The event celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Ukrainian Air Force’s 14th Air Corps. During a high-altitude maneuver, a Ukrainian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 jet, piloted by two seasoned aviators, lost control and plummeted into the crowd. The aircraft leveled out upon impact, skidding across the ground and colliding with the nose of an Il-76 transport plane. It then disintegrated, tumbling through the audience in a devastating cartwheel.
Both pilots managed to eject from the aircraft and survived with minor injuries. However, the spectators were not as fortunate, as 77 people, including 19 children, lost their lives in the tragedy. Additionally, 543 individuals were injured, with 100 requiring urgent medical care for severe head injuries, burns, and fractures. This incident stands as the deadliest air show disaster in history. After the crash, the pilots claimed the flight map they were provided did not match the actual layout. The flight data recorder captured one pilot asking, “And where are our spectators?”—a critical oversight, as air show pilots must always be aware of the crowd’s location.
Experts analyzing the case suggested the pilots failed to respond promptly to automated warnings from the flight computer. Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma publicly held the military accountable for the disaster, leading to the dismissal of Air Force head Volodymyr Strelnykov. The pilots bore the brunt of the blame, receiving lengthy prison sentences and being ordered to pay substantial compensation to the victims’ families. Numerous videos of the crash were released, with the selected clip showing the plane striking the crowd but not fully capturing the ensuing horror. Other recordings provide a more graphic depiction of the tragedy. [Clip]
5. Station Nightclub Fire

Date: February 20, 2003 Casualties: 100 People
The Station, a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, known for its glam metal and rock theme, became the site of the fourth deadliest nightclub fire in U.S. history on February 20, 2003. The blaze claimed 100 lives after pyrotechnics, set off by Great White’s tour manager Daniel Biechele, ignited flammable acoustic foam near the drummer’s alcove during the band’s opening song. Initially mistaken for part of the performance, the fire quickly grew out of control as it spread to the ceiling.
Within a minute, the stage was completely engulfed in flames, forcing most band members to flee through the west exit. Tragically, Great White’s lead guitarist, Ty Longley, perished in the fire. As the nightclub’s fire alarm sounded, patrons rushed toward the front door, one of four possible exits. Panic ensued, causing a stampede that clogged the narrow hallway leading to the main exit, trapping many inside. The fire consumed the entire building in just 5½ minutes.
The fire was captured on video by Brian Butler, a cameraman for WPRI-TV in Providence. The footage, later shared with national news outlets, shows Butler’s narrow escape. The extended version of the video, included here, offers a harrowing look at the chaos, particularly a five-second clip revealing the deadly crush at the club’s entrance. Following the tragedy, the band’s manager and the club owner were convicted of involuntary manslaughter. By August 2008, nearly $175 million had been offered to victims’ families in settlements by various defendants. [Clip]
4. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961

Date: November 23, 1996 Casualties: 122 People
On November 23, 1996, Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked during its journey from Addis Ababa to Nairobi. Three Ethiopians, seeking political asylum in Australia, took control of the plane using a liquor bottle disguised as a bomb and an axe. They demanded the aircraft be flown to Australia, but the captain explained there was insufficient fuel for such a long journey. Instead of heading toward Australia, the pilot followed the African coastline. When the hijackers noticed land, they forced the plane eastward. Unbeknownst to them, Captain Leul secretly directed the aircraft toward the Comoro Islands, located between Madagascar and the African mainland.
As the plane neared the islands, fuel was nearly exhausted, but the hijackers ignored the captain’s warnings. With no other options, Leul began circling the area. When the fuel ran out, the crew activated a ram air turbine to maintain essential systems, but this disabled the hydraulics, rendering the flaps useless. Forced to land at over 175 knots, Leul attempted to ditch the plane in shallow waters 500 yards off Le Galawa Beach Hotel near Mitsamiouli. He aimed to land parallel to the waves for a smoother impact. The left engine and wingtip hit the water first, striking a coral reef and causing the Boeing 767 to spin violently and break apart. Locals and tourists, including scuba divers and French doctors, rushed to assist survivors.
Tragically, 122 of the 172 passengers and crew lost their lives. Many died because they inflated their life vests too early, trapping them inside the sinking plane. This incident led to updated safety instructions about inflating life vests only after exiting the aircraft. A tourist on the beach captured the crash on video, which has since become a valuable resource for aviation crash studies. This event marked one of the few instances of a large airliner landing in water and the first hijacked water landing. Both the captain and co-pilot survived and were honored with aviation awards. They continue to work for Ethiopian Airlines. [Clip]
3. Great East Japan Earthquake

Date: March 11, 2011 Casualties: 15,000 People
Over the past century, numerous videos have documented the world’s natural disasters, but few compare to the footage from the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. On March 11, 2011, a massive undersea megathrust earthquake struck off Japan’s coast. It was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Japan and ranks among the top five strongest since modern record-keeping began in 1900. The quake generated devastating tsunami waves, reaching heights of up to 38 meters (124 feet), which surged as far as 10 kilometers (6 miles) inland.
Beyond the tragic loss of life and widespread infrastructure damage, the tsunami triggered several nuclear accidents, the most severe being a level 7 event at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. A 20-kilometer (12-mile) evacuation zone was established around the plant. The facility’s seawall, designed to withstand a 5.7-meter (19-foot) tsunami, was overwhelmed by waves reaching 14 meters (46 feet) high, which arrived 41–60 minutes after the quake. The disaster’s total cost is estimated to exceed $300 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster in history. The Japanese National Police Agency confirmed approximately 15,000 fatalities.
The earthquake shifted Honshu 2.4 meters (7.9 feet) eastward and altered the Earth’s axis by nearly 10 centimeters (3.9 inches). On March 14, the Bank of Japan injected 15 trillion yen (US$183 billion) into the banking system to stabilize market conditions. Earthquakes rarely exceed a magnitude of 8.5, making the 9.0 magnitude of this event particularly shocking to seismologists. Tragically, over 100,000 children were displaced, with some separated from their families as the quake struck during school hours. Numerous videos have emerged, showcasing the devastation. The selected clip depicts massive ocean waves overwhelming a Japanese city. [Clip]
2. World Trade Center Collapse

Date: September 11, 2001 Casualties: 3,000 People
The September 11 attacks were a series of coordinated suicide operations carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States on September 11, 2001. That morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger planes. Two of these planes were deliberately flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and countless others inside the buildings. Within two hours, both towers collapsed. A third plane was crashed into The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, near Washington, D.C., while the fourth plane went down in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in these attacks. As of June 2009, the New York State Health Department reported that 836 first responders had also died.
During the rescue operations, 343 firefighters and 60 police officers from New York City and the Port Authority lost their lives. Numerous videos were recorded on the morning of September 11, and the tragedy was broadcast live worldwide. Many viewers witnessed victims leaping from the burning towers to their deaths. After the first plane struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, cameras remained focused on the scene, capturing the second plane hitting the South Tower and the eventual collapse of both buildings. The raw footage is deeply unsettling and serves as a stark reminder of the events of that day. Included here is a clip of the second plane crashing into the South Tower. [Clip]
1. John F. Kennedy

Date: November 22, 1963
John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, served from 1961 until his assassination in 1963. He led the nation during a period of intense global tension, particularly with Russia and other communist countries. On November 22, 1963, JFK and his wife Jacqueline traveled to Texas to address divisions within the Democratic Party. As the presidential motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Kennedy was struck by a bullet in the upper back. Moments later, a second shot hit him in the head, killing him instantly at the age of 46. He remains the youngest U.S. president to die in office. Lee Harvey Oswald, an employee of the Texas School Book Depository, where the shots were believed to have originated, was arrested for the murder.
Oswald denied involvement in the shooting but was fatally shot by Jack Ruby on November 24, before he could stand trial. In the aftermath, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the Warren Commission to investigate the assassination, which concluded Oswald acted alone. However, the findings remain controversial. JFK’s death marked a pivotal moment in U.S. history, profoundly impacting the nation and its political landscape. Alongside the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film, the Abraham Zapruder footage of the assassination is among the most widely viewed videos in history. It provides a relatively clear depiction of the event and has been extensively analyzed. The video, filled with imperfections, was not publicly broadcast until March 6, 1975, when it aired on ABC’s Good Night America, hosted by Geraldo Rivera.
Following the assassination of Kennedy, U.S. Presidents ceased using convertible vehicles for travel. Today, Barack Obama’s limousine is equipped with advanced security measures, including military-grade armor and run-flat tires. The doors are as heavy as those on a Boeing 757 cabin, and the engine features an Eaton Twin Vortices Series 1900 supercharger. External sounds are only audible through an internal speaker system. The car is fully sealed against biochemical threats, with an onboard oxygen supply and a built-in firefighting system in the trunk. It can release tear gas and deploy infrared smoke grenades as countermeasures. The limo includes a driver-enhanced video system, enabling operation in total darkness. The trunk contains a blood bank for Obama, and he is always surrounded by multiple escort vehicles. When traveling outside Washington, D.C., the presidential motorcade comprises approximately 45 vehicles. Much has changed since November 22, 1963. [Clip]
