Racial and ethnic stereotypes often stem from widespread fears of the unfamiliar, with recurring patterns manifesting in diverse forms and settings throughout history. These stereotypes are frequently fueled by confirmation bias, a cognitive distortion where people selectively seek out information that supports their pre-existing beliefs while disregarding evidence that contradicts them. This explains why Asians are unfairly labeled as poor drivers despite contradictory data, and why black men are disproportionately targeted for arrest or violence by police. Some ethnic stereotypes have historical or cultural origins, providing context for their existence, while others emerge from the human tendency to simplify complex issues into easily digestible concepts.
10. Americans Struggle with Sarcasm

People from outside the United States, especially the British, often poke fun at Americans for their difficulty in understanding sarcasm. A simple comparison of the British and American versions of The Office reveals the stark difference in humor styles between the two nations. The British often deliver sarcastic or ironic remarks in a dry, deadpan manner, which tends to confuse many Americans. But where did this humorous divide originate?
Claus Grube, the Danish Ambassador to the UK, believes that the British fondness for sarcasm is a remnant of the Vikings, who would downplay their actions while plundering monasteries and attacking coastal villages. A 2008 study proposed that the British affinity for sharp sarcasm and self-deprecation might have a genetic basis, connecting negative humor to a specific genotype commonly found in Brits but absent in Americans.
The most significant difference, however, is rooted in culture. Anthropologists categorize societies into high-context or low-context cultures. High-context cultures convey less information directly, relying on shared social norms, non-verbal cues, and implicit rules. In contrast, low-context cultures prioritize explicit verbal communication.
Both British and American cultures are considered low-context, especially when compared to highly contextual societies in East Asia. However, the United Kingdom is slightly more high-context than the United States. This difference is largely historical. The UK's entrenched class system contrasts with the United States, where the blending of diverse cultures led to a more direct style of communication. As a result, British humor tends to rely on subtler, implied meanings, while American humor is more straightforward.
This doesn't imply that Americans are incapable of understanding sarcasm, but rather that it plays a less central role in their society. In an article for the Guardian, comedian Simon Pegg defended American irony, citing shows like The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and others. He did acknowledge, however, that the uniquely British style of irony can sometimes be lost on Americans, offering an example of an awkward interaction between a British friend and an American friend:
B: I had to go to my granddad’s funeral last week. A: Sorry to hear that. B: Don’t be. It was the first time he ever bought the drinks. A: I see.
9. East African Runners

East Africans, particularly those from Kenya and Ethiopia, are often celebrated as extraordinary long-distance runners, with their dominance in Olympic events, major road races in the US and Europe, and international cross-country championships. Some have tried to explain this phenomenon through environmental factors.
A large number of elite East African runners come from three mountainous regions: Nandi in Kenya and Arsi and Shewa in Ethiopia. The theory suggests that athletes from these high-altitude areas have higher red blood cell counts, giving them a natural advantage in endurance training, as well as more efficient lungs adapted to extract oxygen from thinner air. However, this doesn't account for why countries like Nepal, Peru, or Switzerland have not produced similar world-class runners.
Other theories attribute this success to cultural factors, such as the practice of Kenyan children running to and from school every day, running barefoot, or consuming a simple diet. However, these cultural explanations often fail to withstand closer examination. Most Kenyan children walk or bike to school like children elsewhere, and other regions with similar lifestyles do not produce elite athletes at the same level.
Some research suggests there may be a genetic factor behind the East African advantage. One study highlighted notable differences in body mass index and bone structure between Western professional runners and top East African amateur runners. The latter group was observed to have less mass for their height, longer legs, shorter torsos, and more slender limbs, with one researcher comparing their physique to that of birds. However, not all experts agree with this view, as Swedish medical scientist Bengt Saltin argued that physiological differences between East African and Scandinavian runners did not significantly affect performance.
Other theories suggest the edge might be psychological. In the early 20th century, Scandinavians were similarly dominant in running, before the mantle passed to Australasians in the mid-1900s. The mere belief that East African runners outperform American or European competitors could give them the psychological advantage to continue winning, while their opponents are hindered by the belief that they can't surpass them. This psychological effect can persist for years, but may shift quickly if the myth of East African dominance is broken. Perhaps one day, Swiss or Nepalese runners will rise to the top.
8. Vietnamese Nail Salons

The stereotype of Vietnamese-owned nail salons is partially supported by statistics: Over 80% of nail technicians in California are Vietnamese, and 25-50% across the United States. Though many negative stereotypes are associated with these technicians, there is little evidence to suggest that a Vietnamese nail technician is any more or less competent than a non-Vietnamese technician. But how did this stereotype come about?
Interestingly, the origin of this stereotype can be traced back to Tippi Hedren, the actress famous for starring in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. In 1975, following the fall of Saigon, Hedren visited a Vietnamese refugee camp at Hope Village near Sacramento. Her aim was to find employment for the women there, bringing along seamstresses and typists, but it was her manicured nails that caught the attention of the immigrants. Intrigued, she brought her personal manicurist to train around 20 women, and enlisted the support of a local beauty school, helping these Vietnamese graduates open salons throughout southern California.
This initiative sparked a surge in the number of Vietnamese working as nail technicians. Vietnamese-owned salons made manicures more affordable for the middle class, lowering the cost of manicures and pedicures from about $50 in the 1970s to just $20 today. This price drop, fueled by Vietnamese salons, triggered a boom in demand, encouraging more Vietnamese to enter the industry. As many refugees initially had limited English proficiency, working as a nail technician allowed them to earn a living while using only a few essential phrases. This advantage likely drew later waves of immigrants, including Koreans and Filipinos, to the profession.
Today, the nail salon industry is valued at around $80 billion. Despite some negative stereotypes surrounding Vietnamese salons, such as the use of potentially harmful methyl methacrylate products, their success can be attributed to high-volume, quick-turnaround work at reasonable prices. This success story transformed the American nail care landscape.
7. Fried Chicken And Watermelon

Most people can agree that fried chicken and watermelon are delicious, so it’s strange that the stereotype of African Americans having an excessive fondness for these foods exists. This stereotype has been used to belittle figures like Tiger Woods, Barack Obama, and other prominent black individuals. Given that fried chicken is enjoyed worldwide and watermelon is universally adored, where did this notion originate?
Both fried chicken and watermelon were widely consumed in the southern U.S. by both black and white people, largely because of the region’s climate. Elements of the slave diet, which included less desirable animal parts like pig feet and intestines, were used to belittle black people in derogatory portrayals. In the 1915 film The Birth of the Nation, a scene shows white actors portraying lazy black legislators, with one of them eating fried chicken in an exaggerated and negative manner. University of Missouri Professor Claire Schmidt states, 'That image really solidified the way white people thought of black people and fried chicken.'
Both foods are challenging to eat with elegance, and this made the act of eating them become symbolically tied to black people in the minds of white Americans. This portrayal depicted black people as animalistic, lazy, and uncivilized. Images of black slaves eating watermelon were often meant to suggest, 'See, slavery wasn’t so bad; look how much he enjoys it.' After emancipation, many black families grew, consumed, and sold watermelon, turning it into a symbol of freedom. However, resentful Southern whites used it to symbolize blacks' supposed uncleanliness, laziness, childishness, and unwanted presence. Watermelon, messy to eat, sweet and colorful, and often shared in groups, became an emblem for these negative stereotypes. The stereotype grew in the media, becoming inseparable from black identity, even though the fruit was previously linked to Arabs, Italians, and white hillbillies and yokels in the U.S.
However, perceptions shifted quickly. These stereotypes persisted through the 20th and 21st centuries, though today African Americans are statistically less likely to consume watermelon. Black author Jacqueline Woodson recalled how the racist images she encountered as a child created a physical revulsion and lifelong allergy to the fruit. While these stereotypes are absurd, the historical trauma they caused and continue to cause is very real.
6. Jewish Money

The earliest stereotypes about Jewish people are tied to money—depictions of them as rich misers, shrewd businessmen, and exploitative moneylenders. These negative views have their roots in historical circumstances.
In the Torah, there are prohibitions against charging interest, referred to as neshech, meaning 'to bite,' which relates to exchanges involving silver or money, and tarbit/marbit, meaning 'increase,' likely referring to interest in food exchanges. While it was forbidden to charge interest to achicha (members of one's community), it was permissible to charge interest to nochri (foreigners), typically transient traders. This distinction helped avoid exploitation while still allowing Jews to engage in regional commerce. Later, during Talmudic times, some rabbis prohibited any interest charges for fairness, while others allowed business transactions involving interest, known as hetter iska, with certain restrictions to prevent exploitation.
Jump ahead to the Middle Ages when European economies needed capital to grow. Christian moneylenders existed, but they were limited by Catholic usury laws. Meanwhile, Jews were excluded from many sectors like land ownership and had limited access to trade. Commerce became one of the few avenues where medieval Jews could succeed, and their moneylending services became essential for economic growth. Even secular rulers encouraged Jewish moneylending for tax revenue. Jews had little choice but to enter commerce; however, over time, the negative stereotype of Jewish usury as harmful to Christian economies emerged. In the 14th century, a Provencal Jew accused of seeking unfair restitution from a Christian defended himself with testimonies from both Jews and Christians, attesting to his respect and popularity in the community.
Nobody enjoys paying back loans, and resentment over Jewish economic achievements helped fuel the stereotype, which grew stronger with the rise of wealthy Jewish banking families like the Rothschilds. This stereotype persists today with harmful consequences. In the early 2000s, Rabbi David Kasher recounted how people threw quarters at him and taunted, 'Pick it up, Jew.' In 2006, Ilan Halimi, a Jewish cellphone vendor, was abducted in Paris by a gang called the Barbarians who believed they could ransom him for $500,000. Upon discovering he wasn’t wealthy, they tortured and killed him, dumping his body in a park. Although Jewish people are statistically the wealthiest religious group, this success stems from centuries of systemic discrimination, where the community thrived in spite of adversity, only to be blamed for that very success. This stereotype doesn't imply that every Jew is obsessed with money or has superior financial acumen.
5. Asian L/R Confusion

The stereotype that Asian people cannot distinguish between the letters L and R is an outdated and racist idea, once used for cheap humor. Though less common than before, this misconception still persists as a supposed Asian linguistic flaw. In reality, the issue is far more nuanced.
L and R are both liquid consonants, produced by obstructing airflow in the mouth without creating significant friction or constriction. While they appear in English, they are rare in the world's languages, often classified as 'semi-vowels' due to their vowel-like nature and their interaction with surrounding vowels. These letters can sound quite different depending on their placement within a word, as shown by repeatedly saying the sentence, 'Larry Liar rolls a rally lorry rarely.' For non-native speakers whose languages do not have these liquid consonants, mastering them can be quite challenging.
Among Asian languages, Japanese is the most famous for having difficulty with the L and R distinction. However, this isn't due to confusion between the two letters. Instead, the Japanese language uses a single liquid consonant that lies between the L and R sounds, a rolled R that is very difficult for English speakers to pronounce correctly. In Korean, a single phonetic character is used where R and L are alternate pronunciations depending on the word.
Mandarin Chinese, unlike some other languages, has clear R and L sounds that roughly correspond to their English counterparts, meaning that most Chinese speakers don’t struggle with words starting with these letters. Their challenge, however, lies with the 'dark L,' the L sound that appears at the end of words or syllables. This phoneme doesn’t exist in Mandarin, so a Mandarin speaker might easily pronounce 'rocket' and 'locket' but might say 'Rachel' as 'Racherr.'
Cantonese and other southern Chinese languages lack the R sound altogether, so when these speakers communicate in English, they often substitute R with either L or W. However, certain Asian languages, like Bahasa, possess L and R sounds similar to those in English, meaning L/R confusion is not an issue for Malaysians or Indonesians.
The stereotype that Asian speakers struggle with L/R distinctions emerged due to exposure to Japanese speakers and Hong Kong cinema, but it’s an oversimplified and inaccurate generalization for all Asian language speakers. Though Japanese and Cantonese speakers may find this distinction more challenging, many are still proficient in English. The harmful effects of this stereotype extend beyond just bad jokes—some South Korean parents have gone as far as to have their children undergo tongue-cutting surgery to supposedly improve their English pronunciation.
4. Indian Princess

The myth of the docile, agreeable 'Indian princess' (referring to a Native American princess) can be traced back to the legend of Pocahontas. While Pocahontas was a real historical person, the image created by white colonialists transformed her into a distorted and exaggerated figure.
Native American communities in North America did not follow the monarchical structures of Europe, making the term 'princess' an inaccurate label for the daughter of a Mattaponi sachem. Pocahontas’s mythic role in saving John Smith and marrying John Rolfe became a story that justified the white colonization of Native land. As the archetype of the 'noble savage,' she was portrayed as gentle, exotically beautiful in a way that was palatable to Western ideals, and eager to be absorbed into Anglo-American civilization, culture, and religion. As a so-called 'princess,' she added an air of royalty to American founding myths.
Pocahontas was also sexualized in artistic depictions, such as paintings and staged photos. The attraction to Native women was often shown as tragic, or the character would be revealed to be an acculturated white woman. In every instance, the Native women would align themselves with white civilization, betraying their own people, who were cast as savages. This myth served to justify the Anglo-American destruction of Native culture and society.
This stereotype gained momentum during the 19th century. The late 19th-century poet and author Pauline Johnson, of Mohawk descent, achieved fame by performing in a costume laden with tales, beads, and knives, all while speaking about the doomed love between white men and Native women. Another similar portrayal is Tiger Lily from J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, a 'princess' of the 'Piccaninny tribe' who smokes a peace pipe and refers to Peter as 'the Great White Father.'
This portrayal persisted into the 20th century, especially with the Disney movie and other films depicting Native Americans. However, recent adaptations have either excluded the character altogether or attempted to mitigate the stereotype by using Native actors and showing more respect for genuine Native American culture. Some believe, though, that it would be more beneficial for Native actors to avoid such roles and focus on telling their own stories.
3. The 'Inscrutable Asian' Stereotype

Western media has long depicted Asians as mysterious and unknowable figures, from the secretive villain Fu Manchu to the enigmatic karate master Mr. Miyagi. Even earlier positive portrayals, such as that of detective Charlie Chan, were affected by this stereotype. One of his colleagues in the films even remarked, 'You’re all right. A complete mystery, but a swell dish.' This supposed inscrutability is often associated with a lack of emotion and perceived as vaguely threatening, in contrast to the similar 'stiff upper lip' stereotype of the British, which is viewed more positively.
This stereotype has had real-world consequences, such as providing justification for the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. California Attorney General Earl Warren told a House Committee, 'When we are dealing with the Caucasian race, we have methods that will test the loyalty of them, and we believe that we can, in dealing with the Germans and Italians, arrive at some fairly sound conclusions... But when we deal with the Japanese, we are in an entirely different field and we cannot form any opinion that we believe to be sound.'
The origins of this stereotype can be traced to a difference in communication styles, which ties back to the concepts of high- and low-context cultures. Western cultures generally use direct communication, where the message is exactly as it appears. In contrast, Asian cultures often lean toward non-direct communication, where information is conveyed through both verbal and non-verbal cues that exist beyond the actual words being spoken.
Many cultures around the world prefer non-direct communication for cultural reasons. In East Asia, this is largely influenced by Confucianism, where the main goal of communication is to cultivate and preserve harmony within relationships, rather than focusing solely on the results those relationships may yield. Indirect communication helps maintain this harmony by allowing speakers to use nonverbal cues, which are understood by the listener due to shared cultural and linguistic knowledge.
Korea has a concept known as noonchi, meaning 'to sense someone’s intentions, desires, moods, and attitudes without them being directly stated.' In Japan, there is sasshi, which means 'understanding what someone means without it being directly expressed.' Meanwhile, in China, the idea of 'face' refers to the respect and deference one can command from others, based on one’s status within their social network and how well they are seen to fulfill their societal role. This culture places less value on open expressiveness, instead valuing the ability to read others. In essence, Asians have often been seen as inscrutable by Westerners simply because the ability to assess others is so central to East Asian cultures.
While these insights are useful for understanding cross-cultural communication, they don't fully explain the 'inscrutable' stereotype of Asians. One theory links this perception to the survival logic of peasants in southern China. Villages operated under a system called pao-tia, or 'local order through mutual responsibility,' which meant that problems were kept within the community to avoid attracting attention from powerful outsiders. Chinese immigrants to the U.S. faced similar oppression from the hostile white majority, and organized themselves in ways similar to the structures they had in China. The perceived aloofness and lack of expression in Chinese communities was simply a survival strategy, which white people misinterpreted as 'inscrutability,' seeing Chinese as competitors for work.
Research has shown that in countries like Japan, where emotional control is emphasized, people focus on the eyes when interpreting facial expressions, whereas in Western cultures, people typically focus on the mouth. This explains why Americans use emoticons like :) for happiness and :( for sadness, while the Japanese use (^_^) and (;_;) for the same emotions, respectively. It’s no wonder that people from different cultures are often perceived as mysterious when their facial expressions are interpreted differently, but the mystery might just come from looking at the wrong part of their face.
2. English Food Is Terrible

British cuisine has earned a pretty bad reputation, and many Brits agree with that assessment. In 1998, the Prince of Wales contributed to a cookbook celebrating British food, but his recipe was for basil and pine nut loaf and gnocchi with pesto—a rather Italian dish. This reputation, though somewhat deserved, didn’t always hold true, and it should be understood in a historical context.
During medieval times, the Crusades led to an unexpected surge in the use of spices in cooking, making British food at that time as flavorful and intricate as that of the Near East. However, from the 16th century onward, there was a backlash against this trend, simplifying British cuisine and rejecting the so-called 'fancy' continental styles.
Yet, for the upper classes in the Edwardian era, meals could be extremely lavish—starting with hors d'oeuvres and moving on to oysters or caviar, followed by a clear soup and a hearty thick soup, then boiled fish and fried fish, followed by an entrée such as escalopes of sweetbread à la Marne, a roast with vegetables and potatoes, a sorbet, a roast meat, and finishing off with puddings, ices, savories, and desserts. For the aristocracy, gentry, and upper middle class, food was a tool for impressing guests, as evidenced by late 19th-century 'fancy ices,' where chefs crafted intricate ice cream molds shaped like swans, doves, and even asparagus using copper and pewter.
The lower classes faced a downturn during the Industrial Revolution as farmers transitioned to factory jobs. While much of continental Europe maintained peasant traditions, England slowly replaced fresh, homegrown food with industrially produced alternatives. World War I had a particularly devastating impact on upper-class cuisine, as many skilled domestic servants left for the war and never returned, and food import restrictions limited the variety of available produce. British food culture didn’t have time to recover before the Great Depression struck, followed by World War II and a prolonged period of austerity and food rationing until 1954. In more recent years, multicultural cuisine and the rise of celebrity chefs have helped revitalize British food culture, leading to a growing appreciation for staples like English breakfasts, Cornish pasties, and roast dinners.
Curry Smell

A prevalent negative stereotype in the West is that people from the Indian subcontinent have an unpleasant smell of curry or are simply odorous. Such stereotypes, which are both unkind and offensive, ignore the fact that the ancestors of these people were among the first to prioritize bathing and hygiene. They also developed the Ayurvedic medical system, which placed great emphasis on personal cleanliness.
This stereotype often takes cruel forms. In 2011, a nursery school teacher in Wales was dismissed on charges of child endangerment after she sprayed air freshener on Bangladeshi students, claiming they smelled of onions or curry. She even described it as, “There is a waft coming in from paradise.” However, this idea is not confined to the West. A traditional Vietnamese folk saying goes, “The black Westerner lies in basket breaking wind and using it to make cakes.”
The roots of this stereotype lie in food and perception. Indian cuisine often uses spices like cumin, which contain volatile aromatic compounds that are fat-soluble and easily absorbed into the bloodstream. This means they can be expelled through sweat, and over time, they may impact long-term body odor. Organic chemist Dr. George Preti notes, “Unfortunately, scientists still haven’t been able to figure out at what quantity the smell starts affecting your body odor in the long term.”
It's not just the spices in Indian cuisine that influence body odor. Vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, garlic, and asparagus contain sulfur compounds that also impact how a person smells. Additionally, a 2006 study from the Czech Republic found that meat-eaters have a distinctly different smell compared to vegetarians. Therefore, it’s unjust to single out people whose traditional diets include spicy curries.
Different cuisines introduce different chemicals that affect body odor. It's easier to notice odors from ingredients unfamiliar to your own culture. The tendency for strong body odors is something shared by people from various backgrounds, including white, black, and Indian populations. Most body odor is caused by bacteria that consume sweat from apocrine and eccrine glands, and this is linked to the ABCC11 gene, which also determines whether earwax is wet or dry. According to studies, Europeans and Africans generally have a high rate of ABCC11, which results in wet earwax and body odor, while East Asians, particularly Koreans, do not. It’s time to acknowledge that both genetics and diet affect body odor, and nearly everyone experiences it to some degree.
