It’s hardly surprising that conspiracy theories have emerged around the events of September 11, 2001. Whether you agree with these theories or not, many individuals present at the time raise compelling questions. Coupled with the government’s perceived secrecy in handling the incident (whether justified or not), these factors have kept suspicions alive nearly two decades later.
Naturally, for every claim challenging the “official account” of 9/11 and the “truth movements,” there are opposing viewpoints. Below are 10 assertions that present an alternative perspective to the mainstream narrative. Similar to the debates surrounding the JFK assassination, these 9/11 claims are why the events of that tragic day remain a topic of heated discussion.
10. Were the Pilots Skilled Enough to Maneuver Such Advanced Aircraft?

Significant doubts surround the alleged capability of the terrorists to pilot the planes that struck the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. (We’ll address Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania, later.) It’s important to note that these were not small Cessna-like planes but massive jumbo jets.
These assertions are primarily rooted in the “expert opinions” of various aviation professionals rather than concrete evidence. However, many consider them credible. For instance, several television programs (both conspiracy-focused and investigative) have utilized flight simulators with some of the most skilled and seasoned pilots available.
These simulations tasked pilots with replicating the flight paths taken by the planes that morning, particularly the trajectory of Flight 77 into the Pentagon. This maneuver is widely regarded as one that an amateur pilot would find impossible and even a top-tier pilot would find challenging.
San Diego flight instructor Rick Garza is among those who interacted with the hijackers. Despite training them only on small, single-engine aircraft, he found them incapable of meeting basic standards. In fact, Garza eventually asked them to discontinue training due to their utter incompetence. Notably, these two hijackers—Khalid al-Midhar and Nawaf Alhazmi—later became key enforcers within the group.
9. NORAD’s Inaction: A Point of Contention

As the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is widely considered the world’s most advanced air defense system, many question why none of the four hijacked planes were intercepted by fighter jets—especially since they were stationed at Andrews Air Force Base, just miles away.
This remains a focal point for investigators who argue that the hijackings were permitted to proceed. To some, it’s unfathomable that the government didn’t deploy interceptors, particularly since they were aware of “something seriously wrong” more than 30 minutes before the first plane hit the World Trade Center.
On 9/11, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) was the other primary authority involved. Coincidentally, it was the first day on the job for a key FAA official responsible for overseeing communications. Before he could even settle in, the crisis had already begun to unfold.
To put things into perspective and highlight the unusual lack of action that morning, these “always-ready” interceptors were deployed on 129 scramble missions in 2000 alone. Between September 2000 and June 2001, they were activated 67 times.
It’s also important to note that jets are scrambled under minimal conditions. Even a slight deviation from a plane’s intended route or a brief loss of contact can trigger their deployment. If there’s any uncertainty about a situation, standard protocol dictates treating it as an emergency.
However, on that day, despite the official 9/11 report confirming that authorities were alerted to the situation, interceptors were either not deployed or failed to respond in time.
8. Allegations of Explosions and Bombs

Many assert that the Twin Towers were destroyed by a controlled explosion. Social media frequently circulates videos and angles that purportedly provide “evidence” supporting these claims.
This theory isn’t new. Shortly after the towers fell, some individuals reported hearing explosions within the buildings. Even certain firefighters at the scene shared similar accounts with the media in the aftermath. Naturally, the chaos of the moment likely contributed to widespread confusion.
Interestingly, the individual often credited with popularizing the “controlled demolition” theory is internet user David Rostcheck. After watching the collapse on TV, he posted in a chat room: “It looks like a controlled demolition, and if we don’t hear more about that soon, something is seriously wrong.”
Reports of explosions and bombs weren’t limited to the Twin Towers. April Gallop, a Pentagon employee, was inside the building with her young son on 9/11. She has openly claimed that an explosion resembling a bomb tore through the building. Minutes after the event, she says she walked out barefoot through a hole allegedly made by the plane but saw no plane debris, bodies, or luggage.
Convinced that the official narrative was a deliberate falsehood, she attempted to sue the US government (in the case Gallop v. Cheney). Unsurprisingly, she has faced significant backlash and harassment for her so-called “un-American” views.
7. Donald Rumsfeld’s Address on September 10

On the eve of the September 11 attacks, then–US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced significant cuts at the Pentagon to allocate billions of dollars for military arms and operations.
He also discreetly acknowledged that $2.3 trillion was unaccounted for. As part of his broader vision, the Pentagon would operate more efficiently and address such financial discrepancies. He even mentioned plans to modernize outdated computer systems that stored defense spending records, aiming to improve information sharing and accuracy.
Addressing both national and international media, Rumsfeld declared that his goal wasn’t to attack the Pentagon but to “liberate it!” Less than a day later, the Pentagon was back in the headlines as it became the third target of the 9/11 hijackers.
6. Destruction of Computer Systems

What adds to the suspicion surrounding Donald Rumsfeld’s earlier speech is that all the hardware—and the records stored within it—was located in the section of the Pentagon that bore the full impact of Flight 77. The damage to these records was so extensive that everything was irretrievably lost.
Considering Rumsfeld’s admission of $2.3 trillion being unaccounted for, that sum effectively disappeared into thin air on September 11, 2001.
For those who believe in “black budgets” and unofficial funding, the sudden availability of $2.3 trillion raised eyebrows. In theory, this amount could now be used by a shadow government for undisclosed spending and investments.
Naturally, there’s no concrete evidence to support this. It remains speculative, but that’s the very nature of black budgets. The undeniable truth, however, is that trillions of dollars vanished from the system after the tragic events at the Pentagon.
Additionally, countless invaluable historical documents were destroyed at the Pentagon and the Twin Towers. Researchers and archivists acknowledge that the scale of the loss is so vast that they can’t fully determine what’s missing. This has left significant gaps in historical records, with some events now having no or only fragmented documentation. For instance, a crucial 1921 document detailing the establishment of the Port Authority of New York is among the losses.
5. Additional Conspiracies Surrounding Flight 77

Hani Hanjour, the alleged pilot of Flight 77, is said by some to have been too inexperienced to execute the precise maneuver required to crash the plane into the Pentagon at the exact angle needed to cause such extensive damage.
Just weeks before 9/11, officials at a Maryland airfield doubted Hani Hanjour’s pilot credentials when he tried to rent a small Cessna. They required him to take a supervised test flight. An instructor claimed he “couldn’t fly” and denied the rental.
Officially, Hanjour obtained his pilot’s license in 1999 in Arizona.
In another curious detail, the phone calls reportedly made from Flight 77 moments before the crash are suspected by some to be fabricated. Truthers argue that voice-morphing technology was used to create these calls. The most widely discussed example involves Barbara Olson, wife of then–US Solicitor General Theodore Olson.
Speculations about the fate of Barbara Olson and other passengers range from them being given new identities to being outright killed. Some believe the passengers were lured to the airports so the government could use their images before staging fake plane crashes to instill fear.
While these theories may sound far-fetched, they aren’t solely the domain of “crackpots.” Many academics, scientists, former soldiers, and intelligence officers are among those who reject the official narrative.
4. Allegations of Missile Involvement

Another theory about the Pentagon attack aligns with the claims of April Gallop, mentioned earlier. Retired Major General Albert N. Stubblebine III became a vocal critic of the US government, stating, “I can prove it wasn’t a plane [that struck the Pentagon].”
Stubblebine publicly shared his assertions. Initially accepting the official account, he reconsidered after investigating the Pentagon attack and began exposing what he believed to be a massive cover-up.
Stubblebine claimed that all Pentagon surveillance cameras were turned off except one. Authorities released five frames allegedly showing the plane hitting the building, but Stubblebine argued the footage depicted a missile. He further alleged the images were subtly altered by the government after his claims. Could this be the explosion April Gallop described?
Some claim that Washington’s air defense systems were deactivated during the attack. On conspiracy forums and TV shows, individuals who monitor emergency service frequencies for entertainment have reported hearing, “The Pentagon has been hit by a missile!”
3. The Physics Debate (Sort Of)

Similar to CGI videos, social media was flooded with memes declaring, “Jet Fuel Can’t Melt Steel Beams.” This challenges the widely disputed idea that the Twin Towers collapsed due to the extreme heat from burning jet fuel.
Even if this were possible, skeptics argue it couldn’t have occurred twice. Some experts in construction, demolition, and advanced physics contend that the collapses of the Twin Towers (and later Building 7) resulted from controlled explosions using pre-planted bombs on the buildings’ support beams.
The broadcast of the command to “pull” (a term used in controlled demolitions) over the airwaves only fueled these claims. Some argue, however, that “pull” was a directive for emergency personnel to retreat from the buildings.
Numerous accounts on conspiracy and 9/11 truth websites mention “unusual activity” by contractors performing unspecified tasks on the lower levels and within the structure of the building. While these claims should be approached cautiously, the implication is that these workers were placing explosives to orchestrate the buildings’ collapse.
Naturally, there are rebuttals to these assertions, particularly regarding the beams. While experts agree the beams wouldn’t have melted, they could have weakened sufficiently to destabilize the building. As for the controlled demolition theory, the outward dispersal of debris is often cited as inconsistent with controlled demolitions, which typically result in debris falling inward.
2. CGI Technology

If you frequently browse social media, you’ve likely encountered videos depicting surreal scenes, like a blue whale emerging from a gym floor that transforms into an ocean before diving back in, creating massive waves. These are CGI creations, designed to appear hyper-realistic despite being entirely fabricated.
Similarly, some videos claim to show the second plane striking the South Tower. In a theory as bizarre as it is intriguing, former CIA pilot John Lear asserts that no planes actually hit the Twin Towers on 9/11. Instead, he argues that the footage was a CGI illusion, synchronized with pre-planned explosions within the towers.
Unsurprisingly, his assertions are often met with skepticism and are typically dismissed without serious consideration.
1. Flight 93 and the Mysterious White Plane

Flight 93 is frequently overlooked in discussions about the 9/11 attacks. A key question remains: how did it ultimately crash?
During a 2004 Christmas Eve speech to troops in Baghdad, Donald Rumsfeld appeared to suggest that the plane was shot down by US fighter jets. Conspiracy theorists seized on this as a potential admission. The Pentagon later clarified that Rumsfeld had “misspoken.”
According to the official account, passengers fought back against the hijackers, causing the plane to crash in a Pennsylvania field. However, rumors quickly emerged suggesting the plane was shot down by US military aircraft.
Adding to the intrigue surrounding Flight 93, a mysterious white plane was observed circling over Washington around the time the Pentagon was struck and long after the Twin Towers had been hit.
CNN’s White House correspondent, John King, remarked live on air, “Planes are rarely seen over the White House, as it’s restricted airspace.” He added, “The Secret Service was deeply concerned [by its presence].”
It remains unclear whether this unidentified plane shifted its focus to Flight 93 after leaving Washington’s airspace. Its origin, destination, and passengers are also unknown.
+ Conflicting Timelines and Accounts

While some inconsistencies may stem from the emotional chaos of the moment, the many conflicting accounts, varying timelines, and contradictory narratives are viewed by numerous individuals as evidence that the official 9/11 story is flawed. The discrepancies below serve as notable examples.
During a CNN “Ask-the-President” session with a live audience, then-President Bush shared details that were quickly flagged as inconsistent with other official accounts—and even his own prior statements. For instance, he mentioned being in the hallway outside a classroom when he “saw an airplane hit the tower.”
Official records state that Bush was informed about the second plane hitting the tower while he was listening to children read in the classroom. However, no live footage of the first plane striking the North Tower existed at the time. Only the second impact was broadcast live. By the time footage of the first collision was discovered and shared with the media, Bush had already left the Florida school.
Additionally, Bush claimed his first action was to contact Donald Rumsfeld. However, Rumsfeld contradicted this during a TV interview, stating he only learned of the situation shortly before the Pentagon was struck. Rumsfeld had been in a meeting when concerned staff interrupted him.
Given these unclear details, it’s easy to understand why conspiracy theories gain traction.
