Empathy is a fundamental trait of humanity, often driving individuals to care deeply for one another—sometimes to the point of making the ultimate sacrifice. But how far would you go to protect those you love? Would you lay down your life for them? While many would seek ways to save others without risking their own lives, some extraordinary individuals have chosen to give everything in their final moments to ensure others survive. Still skeptical? Here are ten incredible stories of people who sacrificed themselves to save others.
10. Sergeant Travis Atkins

On June 1, 2007, in the midst of the Iraq War, Sergeant Travis Atkins made a final call to his family before heading out on a mission with his team. He mentioned to his mother that he had mailed her something, unaware that this would be their last conversation. Later that day, soldiers arrived at his mother’s home to deliver the heartbreaking news of his passing.
During the mission, Sergeant Atkins and his team encountered two individuals suspected of planting roadside bombs. As they approached, one of the suspects attempted to detonate a suicide vest by pulling the pin on a grenade. Reacting instantly, Sergeant Atkins grabbed the man in a bear hug, lifted him off the ground, and threw him down, using his body to shield his fellow soldiers from the explosion. His courageous act saved their lives but cost him his own.
When Sergeant Atkins’ parents opened the letter he had mailed, they discovered heartfelt words of gratitude for all they had done for him. Some believe this was a premonition of his impending fate, while others see it as a simple Mother’s Day gesture. Regardless, Sergeant Atkins proved himself a courageous and selfless soldier who gave his life for his team. In recognition of his heroism, his family was awarded a Medal of Honor by former President Donald Trump.
9. Casey Jones

For enthusiasts of historical tales, this story is a must-read. The year 1900 witnessed the tragic yet heroic end of Casey Jones, a legendary American locomotive engineer. Jones met his fate with one hand on the train’s whistle and the other on the brake. While en route to Mississippi, he spotted another freight train on the same track. Without hesitation, he instructed his partner to jump to safety while he fought to stop the train.
Through sheer determination, Jones succeeded in slowing the train enough to save the lives of everyone on board, except himself, at the moment of collision. His extraordinary bravery earned him a permanent place in history. Interestingly, Jones wasn’t originally scheduled to operate this train. After driving it from Canton, Mississippi, another engineer was supposed to take over in Memphis. However, due to the engineer’s illness, Jones stepped in.
8. Aitzaz Hassan

Fifteen-year-old Aitzaz Hassan was walking to school with his friends one morning when they spotted a man wearing a suicide vest. Despite the bomber’s clothing resembling their school uniform, it was clear he wasn’t a student. When the man approached them asking for directions, Hassan sensed something was wrong. Realizing his cover was nearly blown, the bomber hurried toward the school gate, but Hassan decided to intervene.
Hassan began throwing stones at the bomber to halt his progress. As they neared the gate, Hassan tackled the bomber, causing him to detonate the bomb. With students gathered inside for morning assembly, Hassan’s selfless act saved countless lives at the cost of his own.
7. Lieutenant John Robert Fox

We’ve all heard the phrase “shoot yourself in the foot,” but few can imagine actually doing it. Now, picture calling for a missile strike on your own position to stop an enemy advance. Unthinkable, right? Not for John Robert Fox. This American soldier made the ultimate call to sacrifice himself and halt the enemy’s progress.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in May 1915, John Robert Fox was a bright, hardworking young man with a promising future. At 26, he joined the military and quickly rose to the rank of Second Lieutenant. When war erupted, he was assigned to the 92nd Infantry Division, ready to serve his country.
In 1944, Fox was stationed in Italy, fighting against the Nazis. His mission was to remain in the small village of Sommocolonia, Tuscany, to monitor enemy movements as his team retreated. From his vantage point on the second floor of a building, he observed the advancing Nazi forces. Using his radio, Fox contacted his comrades, instructing them to direct their missiles toward his location. As the enemy closed in, he confirmed the order to fire, sacrificing himself to eliminate hundreds of Nazi soldiers.
Fox’s heroic act allowed the American troops to retreat safely and eventually reclaim the town from German forces. His story stands as a testament to extraordinary bravery amidst the chaos of war. For his sacrifice, Fox was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
6. Kiera Larsen

When Bruno Mars sang, “I’ll jump in front of the train for ya,” many assumed it was just poetic lyricism. However, Kiera Larsen, unaware of the song, embodied this sentiment by risking her life to save two toddlers from an oncoming car.
Residents of Lakeside, California, awoke one morning to the headline, “10-year-old girl sacrifices life to save others.” Larsen had been playing outside when she noticed a car, initially moving at 10 miles per hour, accelerating toward two young children.
Seeing the car speeding toward two children playing nearby, Larsen sprinted to push them out of harm’s way. Tragically, she didn’t have enough time to save herself and was struck by the vehicle. While many adults might hesitate in such a moment, Larsen acted without a second thought. Her bravery cements her as a true hero.
5. Muelmar Magallanes

In 2009, Typhoon Ketsana devastated the Philippines, claiming over 700 lives and causing over $1 billion in damages. Among the victims was Muelmar Magallanes, whose actions set him apart. As the typhoon brought torrential rains and rising floodwaters, Magallanes tied a rope around his waist and began evacuating his family, guiding them through the flooded streets to safety.
After ensuring his family’s safety, Magallanes turned his attention to his neighbors, rescuing more than 30 people. His final act of heroism involved saving a woman and her six-month-old baby. Exhausted from his efforts, he lost his grip and was swept away by the floodwaters. While such a story might demand a happy ending in a movie, reality is often harsher, leaving no room for special effects.
4. Scott Beigel

Scott Beigel, a geography teacher and cross-country coach, lost his life while protecting his students during a school shooting. In an interview with ABC, student Kelsey Friend recounted how Beigel unlocked a classroom door, allowing students to enter safely but sacrificing his own chance to escape.
Kelsey shared that Beigel prioritized his students’ safety, ensuring they entered the room before him. As the last student stepped inside, Beigel was fatally shot. The gunman, possibly believing the teacher was alone, moved on, leaving the students unharmed. Kelsey and her classmates remain eternally grateful for their teacher’s selfless bravery—a true example of leadership in the face of danger.
3. Neerja Bhanot

In 1986, Pan Am Flight 73, en route to New York, was hijacked by terrorists during a stopover in Karachi. Disguised as passengers, the hijackers were confronted by airport security, forcing the plane to stop. When their initial plan failed, the terrorists began targeting passengers, demanding flight attendants collect passports to identify Americans.
The flight attendants secretly hid American passports, leading to a 17-hour standoff. As passengers attempted to escape, the terrorists decided to kill everyone on board. Neerja Bhanot played a crucial role in evacuating passengers, but she tragically lost her life. Her heroic actions saved countless lives, earning her the Ashok Chakra, India’s highest bravery award, making her the first woman to receive this honor.
2. Tyler Doohan

One morning, eight-year-old Tyler Doohan awoke to find the trailer he was in engulfed in flames. While most children would instinctively flee, Doohan did the opposite—he ran toward the fire, alerting and waking everyone who was still asleep.
Doohan successfully woke six people, including two young children. Tragically, while attempting to save his grandfather, he was overcome by the intense flames. Reports suggest he died while trying to lift his grandfather to safety. Without Doohan’s courageous actions, the death toll would have been far greater.

She had a clear vision of what she wanted to achieve in life, and she pursued it with determination. Born and raised in Danbury, Connecticut, Townsend’s life was cut short, but her legacy remains impactful.
In addition to her remarkable acting talent, the teenager was academically brilliant and on the path to college. Townsend had penned a list of goals she aspired to accomplish, and by the time of her death, she had already achieved two. Her final act of heroism—pushing her friend out of the way of an oncoming car—fulfilled the third item on her bucket list, though it cost her life. While her death left many grieving, those who knew Townsend were not shocked by her selflessness; it was a defining trait of her character.
