Around the world, many places are steeped in eerie legends, ghost stories, and mysterious UFO sightings. Yet, the Hudson Valley in New York stands out, overflowing with such strange phenomena. From UFOs to Bigfoot and even ancient portals, the valley is home to numerous accounts of the unexplained. Here are ten incidents that cement the Hudson Valley as one of the most enigmatic places on Earth.
10. The UFO Wave of the 1980s

A great place to begin is with the UFO wave that swept through the Hudson Valley during the early to mid-1980s. Many of these sightings were of strange, otherworldly crafts that flew incredibly low over highways and suburban developments. What made these events even more striking was that most of them were witnessed by several people at once.
One typical sighting would involve drivers pulling over on a usually busy highway. The passengers would then get out of their cars to gaze up at the aerial spectacle unfolding above them.
Frequently, the crafts appeared to have a distinctive triangular shape. In recent years, this has led some investigators to suggest that these sightings may not have been extraterrestrial spacecraft but rather covert military vehicles. As we will explore further in this list, these sightings persisted long after the initial wave had passed, although they became much less frequent.
9. The Pine Bush UFO Phenomenon

Just as the UFO wave of the 1980s began to subside, a similar surge of strange occurrences emerged in the Pine Bush area during the early 1990s. While the 1980s sightings primarily involved mysterious flying objects, the Pine Bush events included reports of everything from unusual animals to vanishing figures.
Many paranormal investigators flocked to the area, each bringing their own theories and explanations. Some believed the region contained portals, which were responsible for the UFOs and bizarre creatures being observed. There were even numerous claims of alien abductions. As the reports of strange phenomena increased, so did the number of curious individuals arriving in Pine Bush, eager to witness these events for themselves.
Among the more far-fetched theories was the idea that Pine Bush was an exact replica of the Cydonia region on Mars. According to this theory, the unusual activities were connected to this Martian resemblance. While sightings continue to occur in the region, they are now much rarer and less intense.
8. The Overwhelming Ghost of Room 4714

One of the most unsettling encounters in the Hudson Valley involves a strange and menacing spirit in Room 4714. The eerie events unfolded in October 1972 at the Scott Barracks at West Point, one of the United States' most famous military academies. The occurrences were even officially recorded in an internal newsletter from the base.
Several cadets started to witness bizarre happenings, such as a robe moving on its own, as though being pulled by invisible hands, toilet paper unrolling by itself, and the shower handle shifting from warm to icy cold, then suddenly to scalding hot.
But the incidents soon took a darker turn. One evening, cadet Jim O’Connor was leaving the shower room where these strange events had been happening. As he walked out, something caught his eye. When he turned, he saw a mysterious man holding a 19th-century musket, dressed in clothing from that time. What was even more chilling were the glowing eyes. After a few moments, the figure vanished without a trace.
As the paranormal occurrences intensified, the officers in charge began to take them more seriously. They decided to have a volunteer spend the night in the room while they monitored the situation. Later that night, around 2 am, the volunteer woke to find the same ghostly figure in 19th-century attire hovering over him. Even more terrifying, he felt a heavy weight on his chest, struggling to breathe. When the observers rushed in, the spirit dissipated and vanished through the wall.
The room was eventually declared “off-limits,” and the mystery remains unsolved to this very day.
7. The Whang Hollow Portal?

Numerous fascinating accounts have come from the stone enclosures at a location called the Whang Hollow Portal, at least according to those who believe such a gateway exists there. The stone structure itself is estimated to be around 3,500 years old and is thought by some to have functioned as an ancient astronomical calendar.
According to paranormal researchers, many individuals who have ventured into the site report experiencing strange occurrences. These include hearing eerie “flute-like” music, seeing glowing red eyes staring at them from the darkness, and even encountering a mysterious cloaked figure.
One of the most bizarre incidents involved a person who entered the apparent portal and found themselves unable to leave due to an invisible force field. Not only was the individual unable to pass through this unseen barrier, but they were also physically thrown to the ground by it. Eventually, the strange force lifted, allowing them to escape the mysterious stone enclosure.
6. The Ghost of the Elting Memorial Library

In October 2007, security cameras at the Elting Memorial Library in New Paltz seemed to capture footage of a mysterious figure. The recording was made around 3 a.m. in the days leading up to Halloween.
The footage appears to show a shadowy figure entering the frame and standing near one of the bookshelves. The apparition seemed to be inspecting the books for several seconds before moving out of view toward a nearby doorway.
The video went viral when it was posted on YouTube, drawing millions of viewers. Many speculated about the identity of the ghostly figure. One of the most popular theories is that it was the spirit of Edmund Schoonmaker’s wife, who served as the library’s librarian for over 20 years. Paranormal researchers also note that other ghostly phenomena have been reported in the building, especially when construction work is taking place, such as during the time the footage was captured.
5. Bigfoot Sightings in Hudson Valley

As we might expect, a location filled with such strange occurrences would naturally be home to numerous Bigfoot sightings. This is certainly the case in the Hudson Valley. While many of these sightings have only been officially recorded since the mid-1980s, unofficial reports and tales of these elusive creatures stretch back several decades earlier. The dense woodlands and rugged mountainous terrain of the Hudson Valley provide the ideal habitat for a creature like Bigfoot.
Additionally, the fact that many UFO sightings are also reported in this area draws particular interest from researchers. It is not uncommon for UFO sightings and Bigfoot encounters to overlap, with waves of one phenomenon often coinciding with the other.
In fact, the frequency of Bigfoot sightings in the region has led to the creation of a dedicated group—the Bigfoot Researchers of the Hudson Valley—whose mission is to document and investigate as many encounters as possible.
4. The Forest Park Cemetery

One of the most fascinating sites in the Hudson Valley is Forest Park Cemetery, also known as Pinewoods Cemetery. According to some legends, this very location is said to house the entrance to Hell itself. As a result, many paranormal researchers claim that it is the most haunted cemetery in New York, brimming with eerie legends that are unique to its grounds.
One frequently told legend involves the apparition of a female hitchhiker. This ghostly figure has been reported by numerous drivers passing by a cemetery. The story goes that an unsuspecting motorist will spot a young woman walking along the roadside, seemingly asking for a ride. The driver then offers her a lift, allowing her into the car. However, as they approach the cemetery, the mysterious woman simply vanishes into thin air. Some versions of the tale even mention that the motorist notices the girl's feet appear to be hooves just before she disappears.
In addition to the phantom hitchhiker, many other ghostly sightings have been reported in the area. These include floating orbs of light, the sound of children crying, and fully visible apparitions.
3. The Arthur Kill River UFO Encounter

We began our list with UFO sightings, and it seems only appropriate that we conclude it with one. In June 2001, the Arthur Kill River incident took place, where multiple witnesses from the area observed glowing orbs in a V-formation over the New Jersey Turnpike. While some individuals described the orbs as separate objects, others claimed they were part of a larger craft. The sheer number of observers makes this one of the most credible UFO sightings on record.
The event mirrors the kinds of UFO sightings that were commonly reported in the 1980s. For a brief period, this rekindled the focus of UFO researchers and enthusiasts on the region.
UFO sightings continue to be reported in the Hudson Valley, as well as many other strange occurrences listed here. It's undeniable that the Hudson Valley is not only one of the most peaceful and picturesque areas in the United States but also one of the most mysterious.
2. The Many Other Haunted Hotels of the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley is home to several allegedly haunted hotels. One such place is the Shanley Hotel, which is said to experience a variety of paranormal activities. These include the sound of footsteps moving around the property and up and down the stairs. Guests have also reported being touched or nudged by an unseen force. Even more intriguing, some visitors have witnessed rocking chairs in various rooms moving on their own, as though someone were sitting in them. To add to the mystery, glowing orbs have even been captured on film.
Smalley’s Inn is similarly known for its share of bizarre paranormal activity. The exact origin of these disturbances remains a mystery, but some researchers attribute them to the unusually high number of child deaths that occurred in the building, including those during childbirth.
Others suggest that the strange happenings could be linked to a Ouija board session held in one of the rooms during the early 1980s. It is believed that the ghostly activity began shortly after this ill-advised gathering.
1. The Only Legally Declared Haunted House?

While many haunted houses are claimed to exist in the Hudson Valley, one stands out as potentially the only one legally recognized as haunted. This situation arose in the early 1990s when the buyers of Helen Ackley’s home took her to court to cancel the sale and recover their deposit. They had discovered that the house was the focal point of hauntings and ghostly appearances.
Ackley had failed to inform her buyers about the hauntings, even though she had publicly discussed them as far back as the late 1970s. She had even included her house on local ghost tours. She frequently described the eerie occurrences in vivid detail, such as hearing invisible footsteps on the stairs, objects mysteriously disappearing, and strange jewelry materializing out of nowhere.
The buyers emerged victorious in their case, which resulted in a change in U.S. law. Now, it is a legal requirement for home sellers to disclose any unusual occurrences that have taken place within the property. This includes everything from violent crimes and murders to reported hauntings.
