Throughout our lives, we will inevitably face numerous catastrophic natural disasters. Among the most devastating are hurricanes, storms that have claimed millions of lives over the years. Every year, we witness several of these monstrous events.
Despite the overwhelming loss of life, there are countless inspiring survival stories from those who defied the odds. Below are the stories of individuals who managed to survive these harrowing storms.
10. Jennifer Lowry

Jennifer Lowry was a survivor of Hurricane Odile, which struck Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 2014. The storm was quite unusual. In September 2014, it was initially forecasted that Odile would veer out to sea, and residents and visitors weren't overly concerned. However, the hurricane suddenly shifted direction, intensifying into a devastating storm. Since the people of Cabo were unprepared for such a powerful force, the unexpected disaster claimed the lives of 18 people. Lowry, unfortunately, found herself caught in the middle of it all.
Lowry was vacationing in Cabo with her friends when the storm made landfall. The hotel provided shelter to Lowry and other guests in the ballroom. Though she emerged physically unharmed, many others in the ballroom had been injured by broken glass. Lowry also recalled the terrifying sounds of the hurricane as it raged outside the hotel. Due to the destruction at the airport, Lowry and her friends were stranded for an additional week in Cabo. Though her experience ended safely, it serves as a reminder of how unpredictable and terrifying these storms can be when they shift course and escalate.
9. Isabel Ramos

Isabel Ramos survived Hurricane Andrew in 1992, a catastrophic storm that hit Miami-Dade County, Florida, where Ramos lived. The hurricane’s ferocity caused severe damage to her home, tearing it apart. In the midst of the chaos, Ramos sought refuge in her garage with her dogs, hearing the deafening winds and the collapse of her house around her. She was trapped for hours, forced to hold up a part of the roof to shield herself and her dogs from further danger.
Ramos’s experience underscores the sheer devastation hurricanes can bring and the harsh reality of losing everything you own. It also highlights the critical importance of focusing on safety during such storms, placing your well-being above material possessions.
8. The Smiths

The Smiths, a married couple, survived Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Not only did they endure the storm’s fierce conditions, but they also faced an additional challenge: Annie Smith went into labor during the peak of the hurricane. Harvey was one of the most severe storms in U.S. history, and having a baby amidst such chaos is unimaginable.
The Smiths contacted the director of Annie’s fellowship program, who then alerted the local fire department. The fire department dispatched a truck, which had to navigate through several feet of water, making the rescue incredibly difficult for the firefighters. In coordination with neighbors, they formed a human chain to assist in the rescue. Ultimately, the Smiths reached the fire truck, and Annie gave birth just 12 hours later.
7. Jaimie Cummings

Jaimie Cummings, a resident of New Orleans, endured the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. At just 14 years old, she was at the hospital visiting her mother when the storm reached its peak. As the hurricane intensified, patients were rushed into the hallways for safety while windows shattered around them. When the police arrived, boats were sent to evacuate all patients who could walk, but those too ill or bedridden were left behind.
Both Jaimie and her mother managed to survive, but tragically, many patients and hospital staff lost their lives that day. This account highlights how fortunate some survivors were to have rescuers arrive at the right moment. Without the police intervention, Jaimie and her mother might not have made it through to share their story.
6. A Mother’s Sacrifice

In 2017, following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, a mother and her infant daughter were found drifting in the floodwaters. The baby, still too young to swim, was supported by her mother, who used a backpack and her own body to keep the baby afloat. She did everything within her power to prevent her daughter from drowning, holding her above the rising water. The two were eventually rescued and rushed to the hospital.
Tragically, the mother passed away at the hospital, but her baby survived. Rescuers stated that without the mother's selfless actions, the infant would not have made it through the storm. While the outcome was heartbreaking, it truly exemplifies the boundless lengths a mother will go to protect her child. The pair had been trapped in the floodwaters for days, highlighting the immense strength and determination the mother displayed in her fight to keep her baby alive.
5. A Different Side Of The Storm

The Mullins family survived Hurricane Andrew. They ran a fish shop in Perrine, where they sought shelter for the majority of the storm. Eventually, they were rescued from their store, and everyone survived. However, their story isn’t about the danger of the storm itself, but rather the behavior of people during a massive storm like Hurricane Andrew.
As Hurricane Andrew raged, the streets were filled with looters. The Mullins family spent most of their time during the storm defending their store from these criminals. The streets were rife with violence and even gunfire. While terrified of the storm, the family was also afraid of the people outside who were trying to break into their shop, and possibly harm them. This story illustrates that during hurricanes and other natural disasters, people sometimes commit unspeakable acts in an effort to survive. It’s not just the storm that we need to fear if a hurricane strikes.
4. Shawn Kelly

Shawn Kelly, another survivor of Hurricane Katrina, was only ten years old when the storm struck. During the hurricane, Shawn was with his parents in their apartment. As the storm intensified, they realized they were in imminent danger in the building. In a panic, they crossed the street to a retirement home, reaching higher ground for safety. Shawn and his family, along with others, spent days on the roof of the retirement home before being rescued.
They were eventually rescued by a helicopter and flown to Dallas. Although they were saved, the helicopter prioritized women and children, leaving Shawn’s father behind to wait for another flight. It took two months for Shawn and his mother to reunite with his father. This story has a happy conclusion, with the family coming back together, but unfortunately, many others affected by Hurricane Katrina lost loved ones. The Kelly family was fortunate to have all survived this harrowing ordeal.
3. Mark Davidson And Mike Anderson

Mark Davidson and Mike Anderson defied the odds when they survived Hurricane Ike in 2008. Both men were swept away from their Texas beach houses, carried 23 kilometers (14 miles) by the current, crossing East Bay and ultimately ending up in Chambers County. That alone was a miraculous feat, but the men then had to survive for hours before being rescued. In the debris from the hurricane, they found soft drinks, life jackets, and even a kayak to help them.
Without their courage and a stroke of luck, these two men wouldn’t have lived to tell their tale. This story reminds us that even in the darkest moments, when all hope seems gone, survival can come from the most unexpected places.
2. Mike

Mike survived Hurricane Sandy, also known as Superstorm Sandy, which struck the East Coast of the United States in 2012. Living in New Jersey, Mike’s area was severely impacted. He chose not to evacuate and realized the danger he was in when his house began to flood. In his attempt to escape, he was swept away by the rushing water. The floodwaters carried him down the street until he managed to find shelter in a neighbor’s house. There, he fought off the effects of hypothermia, desperately trying to stay warm.
He wrapped himself in blankets to keep the cold at bay and even left a note for his father, believing he might not survive. Thankfully, Mike was rescued and made it through the storm. His story illustrates how something as simple as blankets can have a profound impact on survival in extreme conditions.
1. Puerto Rico

In 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. Thousands of lives were lost, and the survivors faced immense hardships. Puerto Rico is featured on this list not for the survival of a single individual but to highlight the ongoing struggles that all survivors of the hurricane had to endure. While every hurricane-affected region faces its own aftermath, Puerto Rico’s situation remains one of the most severe.
A month after the storm, 80 percent of the island was still without power, and even today, certain areas remain in the dark. Survivors also found it difficult to access clean drinking water and food, leading to even more tragic deaths. Beyond meeting basic needs, survivors had to contend with the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives while grieving the loss of their loved ones.
