In nature, animals engage in a wide range of behaviors essential for their survival—hunting, foraging, socializing, and protecting their territories. Domesticated animals, too, share many of these same instincts, seeking food, water, shelter, and safety from predators, as well as caring for their young ones.
While every species has its own set of behaviors tailored to its environment, these stories highlight the wild, unpredictable, and sometimes mischievous side of the animal world. From daring feats to clever pranks and acts of rebellion, these animals, whether furry, feathered, or scaled, prove that mischief runs deep in the animal kingdom.
10. Snack Disaster: Trapped Inside a School Vending Machine

On August 12, 2019, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Department responded to an unusual incident at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona, Florida—an ‘uninvited guest’ had been caught inside a vending machine. Despite the raccoon’s obvious knowledge of where to find its favorite treats, it couldn’t escape once it got stuck inside.
When authorities arrived on the scene, they discovered the elusive raccoon trapped between Herr’s potato chips and Welch’s Fruit Snacks. The sheriff’s office called in animal control, and with the teamwork of a deputy, an animal control officer, and a high school custodian, the vending machine was carefully placed onto a dolly and rolled outside to set the raccoon free.
Though it remains unclear if the raccoon managed to nab any snacks during the entire incident, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office later shared a video of the rescue, showing the woodland creature safely escaping and heading off on its next adventure.
9. Concert Crusader: One Epic Escape to Rock Out with Metallica

On August 25, 2023, Metallica packed SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, with nearly 80,000 fans during their M72 World Tour, breaking the venue’s single-show attendance record. In the midst of this record-breaking crowd, the band had an unexpected guest—an Akita-shepherd mix named Storm.
Storm, however, had a family, and it was the band who later clarified on social media that Storm had slipped out of her house, which was right next to SoFi Stadium. Her owners, Kathy Villa and Aribeth Hurtado, had no idea their dog had sneaked out, let alone attended a concert. It wasn’t until they saw a photo of her online that they realized what had happened. Fortunately, Storm was safely reunited with her family the following day.
8. Flightless Fugitive: MeeMoo the Emu’s 20-Mile Adventure

MeeMoo, the emu, resides on a 40-acre (16 hectares) farm in Harriman, Tennessee, with his mate, MeeMee, under the care of their owner, Harry McKinney. On April 12, 2023, while crews were working on a nearby ridge, they startled MeeMoo, causing the bird to leap over the 7-foot (2.1 meters) fence surrounding his enclosure and make a break for freedom.
McKinney saw MeeMoo dash through the front pasture of the property, but with the bird reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour (64 kph), McKinney hopped into his truck to pursue the swift fugitive. Despite his efforts, McKinney quickly lost sight of MeeMoo. Nearby residents also tried to help, but with no success. In the end, McKinney turned to social media, asking the public to share any sightings of the elusive emu.
Thanks to tips from social media users and calls to local police reporting MeeMoo’s whereabouts, law enforcement and volunteer firefighters joined the search. After a seven-hour chase that covered 20 miles (32 kilometers), the officers finally cornered MeeMoo near a Victorian house in the downtown area, which was surrounded by hedges.
With MeeMoo trapped, McKinney was called in to bring the pursuit to a close. He whistled to get the emu’s attention, then used a dog leash from his truck to fashion a slip lead, which he placed over MeeMoo’s neck before leading him back to the truck. Upon returning the emu to his enclosure, McKinney made the decision to raise the fence from 7 feet to 9 feet (2.7 meters) in hopes of preventing any future escapes.
7. Cocoa Caper: Antics Turn Estate into Chocolate Wrapper Wonderland

In September 2023, 33-year-old Fiona Downes began noticing an unusual amount of wrappers from Blue Riband bars (crispy wafers coated in milk chocolate) scattered across the private estate of Dudley Crescent in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, England, where she resides. Downes took to the estate’s WhatsApp group, sharing a picture of the wrappers and asking fellow residents to kindly pick them up.
Sadly, over the following months, even more wrappers from half-eaten chocolate bars kept appearing. The litter began to frustrate the residents, and the ongoing mystery—later dubbed 'Wafergate'—became a daily topic of conversation in the WhatsApp group as everyone tried to figure out who was behind the mess.
It wasn’t until November 21, 2023, that a local worker from a nearby storage facility discovered dozens of Blue Riband wrappers inside a skip (a large metal waste container) located just behind the estate.
Soon after, 42-year-old Natalie Clarke, another resident of the estate, spotted squirrels running up a tree with wrappers in their mouths. She managed to capture a picture of the mischievous critters, solving the months-long puzzle and revealing the culprit behind the chocolate wrapper phenomenon—sweet-toothed squirrels.
6. Petty Thief: Klepto Swiping Items from Neighboring Homes

Jeanne Wheat of Katy, Texas, first noticed her black outdoor cat Cleo swiping items from inside her home. What started as innocent mischief soon escalated, and Cleo became a notorious neighborhood thief.
While Wheat was away during the summer of 2023, Cleo began to visit nearby homes, sneaking in through open windows and even crawling into unlocked car windows. The crafty feline began collecting an assortment of stolen items—socks, yard gloves, bathing suits, T-shirts, and even... computer mice.
Cleo’s thieving habit became so prolific that Wheat set up a table outside her house with a “box of shame” for all the stolen goods. Signs accompanied the display, reading: 'My cat is a thief,' 'Please look through his loot and recover your stuff,' and 'He has no remorse, but I apologize on his behalf,' encouraging neighbors to retrieve their belongings.
Rather than being upset by the thefts, the neighbors’ reaction was unexpectedly positive, and Cleo quickly became a social media sensation. The community embraced the mischievous cat, even creating T-shirts in his honor and donating a portion of the proceeds to a local animal shelter.
5. Principal vs. Dumpster: A 'Beary' Big Surprise

Zela Elementary School, located in Summersville, West Virginia, recently installed a lock bar on their dumpster after a black bear left a mess of garbage bags scattered around the area. However, on the morning of May 1, 2023, around 7:15 am, Principal James Marsh was in for a shock when he unlocked the dumpster, only to have a black bear suddenly leap out.
As soon as the bear’s head emerged from the dumpster, Marsh quickly backed away while the bear dashed into the woods. Fortunately, no one was harmed, and the entire surprising event was caught on the school's security cameras, which quickly made its rounds on social media. Marsh later speculated that the bear must have gotten stuck in the dumpster after crawling in for a meal and a snack.
While the students found the footage hilarious, the school assured the public that they were taking additional steps to prevent another bear encounter. The West Virginia Department of Natural Resources visited the school to make modifications to the dumpster’s lock to ensure the bear stays away in the future.
4. Houdini Husky: Shelter Escape Artist’s Mission to Liberate and Feast

Sometime between midnight and 1 am on November 16, 2023, Jodi Polanski, the founder and CEO of Lost Our Home Pet Rescue in Tempe, Arizona, received an alert on her phone indicating that the shelter’s alarm had been triggered. However, the culprit wasn’t an intruder, but a hungry husky named King, who had set off the alarm from inside the shelter.
Once King, the escape artist, managed to break free from his kennel, he was spotted wandering the shelter’s halls, attempting to liberate his fellow canine friends so they could join in on his midnight adventure. While he didn’t manage to free his buddies, King did manage to gnaw on the door handle that led to the office, opening it with his mouth and paws to begin his impromptu celebration.
In the shelter’s lobby, King proceeded to wreak havoc, jumping on the furniture, pulling down food, and indulging in a delicious midnight feast. However, King’s all-you-can-eat party was soon interrupted when a Tempe police officer arrived and caught him in the act. Thanks to a partnership, the Tempe police have 24-hour access to the shelter to drop off animals in need.
Despite his ‘arrest,’ King greeted the officer with enthusiasm and was escorted back to his kennel. The officer, being kind-hearted, also helped clean up the mess King had left behind from his festive eating spree. The entire hilarious incident, dubbed the 'cutest arrest ever,' was captured on the shelter’s security cameras.
Even with his mischievous record, Polanski later shared that King, who had originally arrived as a stray, was 'snatched up by his forever home almost immediately,' finding a family of his own.
3. Sweet Trouble: Mother Bear and Cub Pull Off Krispy Kreme Heist

On September 12, 2023, a Krispy Kreme delivery van was parked outside a store at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, a military base in Anchorage, Alaska. The delivery driver had a habit of leaving the van doors open while making stops, a routine that ultimately proved to be a costly mistake.
While the driver was inside the convenience store, a mother bear and her cub managed to sneak into the van, causing a mess as they devoured 20 packages of doughnut holes and about six packs of three-pack chocolate doughnuts.
It wasn’t until the driver returned from the store that he discovered the bears feasting inside the van. Store manager Shelly Deano captured a few photos of the unusual scene. Together with the driver, she tried to scare the bears away by banging on the van. However, the bears paid no attention and continued munching on their doughnut feast.
Afterward, base security was called in, setting off sirens to frighten the bears. Eventually, the mother and cub left the van, briefly wandered in front of the store, and then made their way back into the woods.
2. Bargain Hunting Adventure: Unexpected Guest Waits Outside Dollar General

On August 29, 2023, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to an unusual call—an alligator, measuring 6 feet (1.8 meters), was found near the entrance of a Dollar General store in Buras, Louisiana. It appeared to be 'patiently waiting' for the store to open its doors.
1. The Adorable Cleaning Routine: Caught Red-Pawed Tidying Up Man’s Shed

In late 2023, 75-year-old wildlife photographer Rodney Holbrook from Builth Wells, Powys, Wales, began noticing that items he left out of place in his shed were mysteriously being returned to their rightful places overnight. Holbrook noticed this odd behavior when bird food he had stored in the shed ended up inside an old pair of shoes.
Perplexed by how his shed appeared to clean itself, Holbrook set up a night vision camera on his workbench. What he discovered was reminiscent of the 2007 animated film Ratatouille, where a rodent secretly works in a restaurant kitchen. However, instead of cooking, Holbrook found a mouse making nightly visits to collect clothespins, corks, nuts, and bolts, and neatly arranging them on a tray on his workbench.
After discovering the rodent’s nightly cleaning routine in his shed, Holbrook decided to experiment by leaving different objects out to test the mouse’s ability to lift them. However, the mouse remained unfazed, even carrying cable ties to the pot.
The mouse, whom Holbrook has affectionately named the 'Welsh Tidy Mouse,' usually works solo but occasionally is accompanied by one or two other mice. Despite this, Holbrook is unbothered by the situation and has allowed the mouse to follow its cleaning schedule. He even joked, saying, 'I think he would tidy my wife away if I left her in there.'
