The delicate balance between order and chaos.
iStockphoto/ThinkstockOne person's clutter is another's carefully arranged system. But there are certain indicators that reveal when disorganization has gotten out of hand — these are the people who might benefit from adding some structure to their lives.
Are you guilty of disorganization? You might be without even realizing it. This article will help you determine whether your 'system' (or lack of one) has gone too far. Whether it's a garage bursting with mismatched outdoor gear or a junk drawer that defies all logic, these signs could mean you've crossed the line from 'messy' to 'disorganized disaster.'
10: I should get organized? But I'm feeling overwhelmed!
Is your workspace a chaotic mess? It might be time to get serious and tackle the issue head-on.
Thomas Northcut/Digital Vision/ThinkstockIf the mere thought of 'getting organized' overwhelms you, that's likely the first sign of trouble. Feeling like you can't keep up might be the biggest clue that things have spiraled out of control. If even a quick scan of your living space or office makes you anxious, you might be facing a mess that's more than you can handle alone.
Take a moment to reflect on your emotions — is there something else going on that could be making the situation worse? Is work in general dragging you down? Are holiday preparations for the house stressing you out? Could seasonal depression be playing a part? If you find yourself answering 'No, it's just me and my inability to stay organized,' then, yes, it's likely that you're simply caught in a disorganized mess. Start small to regain control.
9: Hosting guests? You might want to reconsider!
For those of you who are especially disorganized, the thought of hosting guests can trigger a panic attack. If you suspect that your home has reached disaster zone status, the idea of friends, neighbors, or even your kids' visitors showing up can be nerve-wracking.
If you find yourself avoiding hosting guests, it might indicate an issue with your organization skills. (However, be sure to consider other stressors that might be affecting your perspective.) Not everyone is naturally outgoing, but everyone should feel at ease inviting close friends over without the pressure of an overwhelming cleanup.
8: Dining at the table? Don't count on it!
Dreaming of a kitchen like this? You’re not the only one!
George Doyle/Stockbyte/ThinkstockI can totally relate. Growing up, our dining room table was mostly reserved for special events, which meant carefully clearing away the clutter without disturbing the piles. Or, if it was used for everyday meals, we'd just shove things aside and find a little spot to set our plates.
Other than that, we ate wherever we could find a space. The table was often covered with calendars, bills, flyers, mail, cards, permission slips, homework, and more. Occasionally, there were flowers, which was a nice touch.
The point here is, if your dining table is not being used for meals, it might be a sign that your organizational skills need some work (as ours clearly did back then). The same applies to a garage that’s too cluttered to park cars, closets stuffed beyond capacity, and those poor attics and basements that are so full they can’t accommodate another thing — they're packed to the rafters (or I-beams, to be exact).
7: That food spoiled? Oops!
More food turning bad?Another sign of disorganization is consistently finding spoiled food in your kitchen. While occasional moldy meals are one thing, discovering bizarre growths on your condiments is a different story, since they’re meant to last longer.
If your fridge starts resembling a mold farm, that's definitely a red flag. Antibiotics may have revolutionized medicine, but they’re best produced in labs under controlled conditions. Your fridge, however, is not a sterile environment.
The same applies to your pantry. If you find that non-perishable foods are going bad on your watch, it might be time to face the fact that your organizational skills need work. A good habit is to pay attention to food drives for those in need. When you hear about one, take a moment to go through your pantry, toss out expired items, and donate anything you’re unlikely to use before the expiration date.
6: Your project deadline passed? Oops!
If you're regularly missing deadlines — whether it's for work or school projects — you might be dealing with serious disorganization. Meeting commitments is crucial, and if that's not happening, it’s time to either reassess your workload or improve how you're managing tasks.
This could involve scaling back a bit and making a list of important tasks: work presentations, school assignments, and family events. Just be sure to keep your priorities straight (and your sanity intact) while making that list. After all, too much work and no fun can lead to problems. Just ask Jack Nicholson and the rest of the cast of "The Shining."
5: That bill overdue? My mistake!
Household finances are another area where disorganization can quickly spiral out of control. Missing rent or a mortgage payment can severely damage a household’s financial standing. Skipping a credit card payment can tarnish your credit history. And don't forget about the utilities, car insurance, phone bills, and cable charges that all add up.
Lack of control over money management can be a major disaster for the disorganized, and it can lead to wasted money on late fees. If this sounds familiar, it’s best to tackle the issue before it gets worse. Consider using online bill payments or automatic drafts to simplify the process, and create a budget spreadsheet to keep track of everything.
4: Planning a vacation? Where did we put our passports?!
Passport? Check. Luggage? Check. But wait – who’s taking care of the pets?!I recently planned two major international trips with only a small (okay, maybe a significant) amount of help. Let me tell you, it was a lot to juggle. Between passports, international driver’s permits, vaccinations, reservations, government travel advisories, travel restrictions, dietary preferences, and itinerary details, there was so much to keep track of.
If you’re planning a big vacation but have no clue where to begin, it might be time to reach out to a travel agent. Organizing a major trip isn’t always for everyone, and the last thing you want is to find yourself (and, heaven forbid, your family) stranded in a foreign land. However, even if you’d rather not hire a professional, there are plenty of ways to streamline the process. Start early and remember: a solid, detailed list will be your best ally. Don’t hesitate to let that list – and your itinerary – evolve as you gather more details about your destination.
3: Going on a road trip with passengers? Where will they sit?!
We've all witnessed them—the cars in parking lots with windows that tell a story of a driver who refuses to part with anything. From fast food cups to gum wrappers, even a forgotten air freshener: everything is there, seemingly immortal.
If your backseat is a mirror of this, your mess might have crossed into ‘disaster zone.’ We’ll excuse you if you own an RV, but if it’s a regular four-door sedan, then no – that’s not acceptable. For your safety and that of your passengers, it’s time to clean up. No one’s backseat should resemble a dumpster.
2: Getting ready for work? Where are my clean pants?!
Is there ever a time when laundry is completely done? Seriously, does it ever end? Ever had the misfortune of rushing to get ready for work, only to discover that all your clean clothes (the ones that are actually presentable for the office) are stuck in the dryer – or worse, the washer – and now you're in a mad scramble to get dressed on time? We’re not saying we’ve been there, but yes, we totally feel your pain.
Laundry is the worst, no arguing that. But if you constantly find that laundry is sabotaging your day-to-day life, then you might be a little more disorganized than the rest of us. Try breaking it down into smaller tasks to make the process more manageable, and see if that doesn’t help you look more put-together at work (and ease that morning stress).
1: Moving in together? But now we have two of everything!
Combining two fully-stocked households is never an easy task. In the best of times, it's a bit of a chore. In the worst of times, it can lead to some serious arguments. Whose kitchen table gets to stay? Which dresser should we use? Who gets the prime bathroom counter space for their toiletries? And don’t even get me started on the spice racks or utensil drawers—those could spark a war depending on how seriously you and your partner feel about basil and forks.
If you're dealing with something like this, being disorganized won't make the situation any easier. Want your centerpiece on display? Your picture on the wall? If you can't even locate them, they're probably not going to make it into place. So, if you notice that more and more of your items are disappearing or being pushed aside, that might be a sign that you're the one with the organizational struggles and could benefit from a bit of guidance in that area.
