9. Puppies Behind Bars
Who can resist the charm of puppies? The Puppies Behind Bars initiative serves multiple purposes, and its heartwarming name captures the essence of its mission. This program teaches inmates to raise dogs for various critical roles, including:
- Assistance dogs for injured veterans and emergency responders
- Explosive detection dogs for law enforcement
- Comfort dogs for police departments
Inmates are given a puppy to train, starting as young as eight weeks old. The puppies learn basic commands and skills during this time. By the age of 24 months, the dogs are returned to Puppies Behind Bars for advanced training and evaluation before being matched with their permanent handlers.
Caring for a puppy through this program allows inmates to develop essential skills, such as nurturing and compassion. Since its inception in 2006, Charity: Water has financed over 90,000 projects, benefiting more than 14 million people across 29 countries. What stands out is their transparency in showcasing how donations are utilized and the tangible outcomes achieved through these contributions.
7. To Write Love on Her Arms

To Write Love on Her Arms was established in 2007 by Jamie Tworkowski, inspired by a story he wrote about a friend battling mental illness, which he shared on MySpace. 6. FSHD Society
As stated by Johns Hopkins Medicine, “Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a rare genetic disorder that weakens and shrinks (atrophies) the muscles in the face, shoulders, upper arms, and lower legs of affected individuals.” Sadly, no cure currently exists for this condition.
Thankfully, the FSHD Society provides support for patients and their families. Founded in 1991 by two individuals with FSHD, Steve Jacobsen and Daniel Perez, the organization has expanded significantly, investing over $10 million into researching the causes of this condition.
As outlined on the FSHD website, the organization has four primary objectives:
- Understanding the biological mechanisms of the disease
- Creating infrastructure to speed up research efforts
- Enhancing patient care across the country
- Accelerating the development of effective treatments
Since its establishment in 1991, FSHD has achieved significant milestones. However, a cure for the disease remains elusive, and the organization continues to rely on increased support and awareness to further its mission.
5. India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF)
The next charity, headquartered in North Bethesda, Maryland, directs its efforts toward India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The India Development and Relief Fund focuses on empowering communities in these regions. As they state, “Our approach prioritizes empowering the poor rather than simply providing charity.”

Since its inception, Pencils of Promise has trained over 3,000 teachers worldwide and constructed or improved schools in underserved regions. A clean and conducive learning environment is essential for students to thrive, and the organization ensures this through its efforts.
With programs in Laos, Ghana, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, Pencils of Promise currently supports over 100,000 students. What began with a single pencil has grown into a global movement empowering teachers and students alike. Despite its modest size, this charity has created a profound impact.
3. National Pediatric Cancer Foundation
The National Pediatric Cancer Foundation was established in 1991 by two mothers, Melissa Helms and Risa Tramel. They met in Florida under heartbreaking circumstances, as both were caring for infant daughters undergoing cancer treatment. Thankfully, their daughters recovered, but this shared experience inspired Helms and Tramel to take action against pediatric cancer, leading to the creation of this foundation.
In 2005, they launched Project Sunshine, an initiative aimed at uniting leading doctors and researchers to accelerate the discovery of a cure for pediatric cancer. Since its inception, Project Sunshine has allocated over $30 million to research and funded four clinical trials. This is a remarkable achievement for a charity that began with two mothers determined to make a difference.
2. Oxfam International

Established in 1989, ELAW is one of the oldest organizations featured here. They achieve their mission through a network of advocates, including scientists and environmental lawyers. With over 300 advocates, 13 of whom have received the esteemed Goldman Prize for grassroots environmental efforts since 1990, ELAW continues to make a significant impact.
