While disasters and tragedies are undeniably horrifying, they hold a peculiar allure for humanity. This fascination intensifies when tales suggest that the echoes of victims' lives persist beyond death.
10. The Queen Mary

In December 2011, Kelly Ryann Dorrel fell 23 meters (75 ft) from the deck of the Queen Mary into the freezing waters below. Her boyfriend made a frantic attempt to grasp her hand and keep her from falling, but his efforts were unsuccessful.
He leaped into the water in a desperate bid to rescue her, but she later succumbed to her injuries in a hospital. Prior to this incident, at least 49 other individuals had met their demise aboard the ship.
Decades earlier, during World War II, over 200 crew members of the HMS Curacoa perished when the Queen Mary collided with it, splitting the Curacoa in two. Given this history, it’s no surprise that the Queen Mary is said to be inhabited by numerous restless spirits.
A female bartender working on the ship concurs with the belief that it is one of the most haunted locations in America. She first became aware of the supernatural presence when an elderly customer pointed out a “deceased individual” standing right beside her.
9. One World Trade Center

The new One World Trade Center rises majestically over Lower Manhattan, standing on the grounds where the original 6 World Trade Center once stood. When powerful winds sweep through, an unsettling wailing noise resonates from the building. Many believe this sound is the voices of those who perished there, their spirits still lingering.
Some who have heard the noise describe it as a chorus of voices coming from within the structure. Others insist it resembles ghostly whispers from beyond this world. While scientists attribute the phenomenon to wind, not everyone accepts this simple explanation.
8. Thailand

The 2004 tsunami, which devastated numerous villages and claimed hundreds of thousands of lives, left behind more than just ruin and sorrow. Since then, countless ghostly tales have emerged, spreading far and wide.
A taxi driver named Lek was certain he had transported seven spectral passengers one night in 2005. After settling on the fare and heading toward their desired destination, Kata Beach, Lek glanced around only to discover his cab was completely empty.
Terrified, Lek resolved to switch careers, too frightened to drive at night again. Similarly, a security guard at an Andaman wreckage site resigned after enduring the relentless, haunting screams of a foreign woman’s spirit who had perished in a tsunami-stricken hotel.
Perhaps the most chilling story involves a family whose phone rang incessantly, day and night. Each time they answered, they heard the voices of relatives and friends shrieking and pleading for rescue from being consumed by flames in a crematorium.
7. Japan

In 2011, Japan experienced its most powerful earthquake in history, triggering a catastrophic tsunami. The disaster claimed thousands of lives, and debris from the event washed ashore in North America for years. The quake was so immense that it altered Earth’s axis, shortening the length of a day by one microsecond.
In the aftermath, survivors recounted encounters with drenched apparitions of deceased neighbors appearing at their homes. Some claimed to see eyes gazing back at them from water puddles, while others felt they were being possessed by the spirits of the dead. Desperate for relief, many sought the assistance of exorcists, as depicted in the image above.
Psychiatrists suggest that these sightings may stem from PTSD as individuals process their grief and trauma. Despite this explanation, reports of ghostly encounters persist, with witnesses describing mutilated apparitions lacking heads, arms, or legs. Others mention unexplained cold areas in their homes and the sensation of an unseen presence pressing down on their chests while lying in bed.
6. Pearl Harbor

In Hawaii, the USS Arizona memorial attracts countless visitors annually, serving as a tribute to those who perished during the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
In 2011, Susan De Vanny toured the memorial, capturing numerous photos as she explored the site. Later, while reviewing the images at her hotel, she was stunned to discover a haunting face in one of the pictures—a young sailor’s visage gazing sorrowfully back at her.
De Vanny is convinced the face belongs to the ghost of a sailor who perished aboard the Arizona during its explosion in the attack. She believes the sailor was attempting to convey a message from beyond the grave.
5. Ten Bells Pub

In 1888, Mary Kelly was a regular at the Ten Bells Pub. One early morning, after a night of drinking, she left the pub to head home, unaware that she would soon become Jack the Ripper’s final victim. Her brutally mutilated body was found the next morning just across the road from the pub.
Ghostly tales about the pub began circulating in the 1990s. Staff reported encountering the apparition of an elderly man dressed in Victorian-era attire. Some even awoke in the middle of the night to find a spectral figure lying beside them in bed.
Others recounted stories of a shadowy figure that leaps from Westminster Bridge as the clock strikes midnight on December 31. This spirit is believed to be none other than Jack the Ripper himself.
4. World War I Trenches

In April 1917, Corporal Will Bird and two fellow soldiers attempted to rest in a dugout near Vimy Ridge. Just before dawn, Bird felt warm hands shaking him awake. Assuming it was one of his comrades with urgent news, he opened his eyes to find his brother, who had died in France two years prior, standing before him.
His brother remained silent, simply gazing at Bird. Moments later, the apparition began to walk away slowly, motioning for Bird to follow. Without hesitation, Bird trailed his brother to a ruined structure, where the spirit vanished into thin air. Overwhelmed with grief at losing his brother once more, Bird collapsed and lay on the cold ground for hours.
Upon returning to the bunker, Bird discovered it had been struck by a shell, killing everyone inside. He later documented this experience, firmly believing his brother’s ghost had saved his life.
3. Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg, the largest and bloodiest of the Civil War, lasted just three days but claimed nearly 10,000 soldiers' lives.
Jennie Wade was the sole civilian casualty, struck by a stray bullet that pierced the wall of the Farnsworth House Inn. It appears that Jennie’s spirit remains restless. Staff and guests have reported sightings of her sister Sarah’s ghost baking bread in the kitchen, while others have caught the scent of Sarah’s signature rose perfume lingering in the air.
The inn is said to be haunted by at least 14 spirits. Among them is a young boy who died after being trampled by a horse and carriage. One guest claimed to see blood streaming down the walls of a bathroom adjacent to his room, believed to be from a Confederate soldier who was shot in the attic and bled to death directly above.
2. Pompeii

The catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 obliterated Pompeii, leaving its inhabitants entombed in ash, pumice, and lava, their final moments preserved in time.
During a television interview with Josh Gates, a security guard at the Pompeii ruins recounted hearing screams at night while on patrol. A crew member also reported feeling chills as she heard footsteps racing behind her during filming.
Workers at the site have described hearing ghostly howls emanating from the ruins of a former brothel and mournful groans from the Temple of Isis. They also claim that screams reverberate through the desolate streets during the night.
1. Auschwitz

Auschwitz, a Nazi death camp in Poland, was the site where more than a million people perished in gas chambers or through merciless executions. Visitors often speak of an intense feeling of sorrow and foreboding when touring the grounds.
Visitors have reported feeling an unseen hand grasp theirs as they step into the former gas chambers. It is also said that birds avoid flying over the camp, and if they do, they remain eerily silent.
Despite numerous accounts of paranormal activity, professional ghost hunters have never formally investigated this site or other World War II camps, out of respect for the families of the victims.
